[Complete] Hyper Super-Nintendo: SNES PC - Upgraded

This could have also been named SNES PC v2.0. In an effort to fix thermal issues and upgrade performance, the Hyper SNES is the result of those goals.

 

The CPU cooler was upgraded from a Rosewill low-profile air cooler a the Corsair H55 AIO. This way, nearly all the heat created by the CPU is dissipated outside the enclosure. Previously, there wasn’t enough airflow and all the warm air was getting trapped inside, causing very high CPU temps under normal loads. Now? CPU stays in the low/mid 30’s under normal usage. Was really tricky to fit the pump block and hoses inside. Had to try a few different positions before finding the right layout that would keep the low clearance and allow the lines to run out the back. The radiator rests comfortably behind and doesn’t put any strain on the hoses. I might fabricate a simple bracket to attach the rad to the enclosure for extra, but it’s fine as-is for now.

 

Memory was upgraded from 4GB to 8GB, for obvious reasons. 4 was enough for regular HTPC streaming tasks, but not for gaming. ;)

 

The biggest upgrade was the GPU. The previous GTX 750 1GB was “ok”, but swapping out for the Asus Dual GTX 1050Ti 4GB OC was quite the step up and is still a very good match for the i3-4150. Now it’s a fairly capable 1080p gaming machine that still retains the original SNES enclosure, which was always the original goal for this build.

 

Pretty happy with how it turned out this time. :)

SNES Turbo (If only you used the Asus Turbo version of the 1060, then it would make even more sense but be louder. And not in the Car kinda turbo louder where it actually sounds good :D)

Not to mention the lack of a backplate.. I'd order a nice one from V1tech or something, I can't stand looking at it without the backplate!

Here's the build log from the original conversion. Took me a few hours to perform the recent modifications & upgrades.

It's actually quite stable. I angled the bottom of the retension bracket to support it so it actually doesn't flop around or anything at all. I didn't want anything else touching the card so it would look more like a game cartridge (sort of). 

 

And no, it was a dead SNES when I got it. ;)

Where it sits in my living room, you never see the back of the GPU, so it's not a concern for me. Also, I like the look of bare PCBs and components. ;)

Looking awesome! Probably the best use of the cartridge slot in any snes PC mod I've seen to date ;)

I gotta ask tough; what is that sexy dual socket board you have laying in the background?

That dual-socket board is for another up-coming build I'm working on. It's a dual 2011-0 board from a Lenovo workstation a friend gave to me (just the board). Already populated it with dual Xeon E5-2643's and 16GB of ECC ram. ;) More details to emerge in time... :ph34r:

The power button and LED are both functional. Reset button is now fixed in-place as is the eject button (don't really have a need for them). The wires connected at the front near the controller ports is for the original red power LED. Just under the bottom at that front corner is an amber LED for storage drive activity. 

 

I do plan on using the front controller ports with original controller and wire them up on the inside to USB. But that's a project for another day. ;)

You could run Tomb Raider on that SNES. I love it when people rig up old tech to be new. Not as much of a sleeper tho.
