Apple's October 16th event: new iPads and 5k iMac

Dietrichw

Well at that price I am kind of impressed with both the 5K iMac and the new Mac Mini.

I am worried about the GPU though. They said it's an R9 M295X (new part we have no info about). The M290X is basically a 7870 so it might not be that powerful. Could be a problem when using a 5K display.

Is the m290x that weak? The current GTX 780m is much stronger than that.

Also TFLOP wise if the m290x is 3.5 it matched the FirePro D700, which is around ~10% slower than the 280X in gaming.

Dell's is not yet commercially available for purchase. You can preorder it. 5K iMacs aware order-ready. Also, being tied for 1st is still being in 1st.

Please don't quote the whole article.

But it is.

You're thinking that they meant first. They didn't say anything about it even being first. The image states "World's highest resolution display", not "The world's first 5K display."

They didn't say it's the only one; 5K is the world's highest resolution for screens; and the new iMac has one of them.

8k professional displays exist. Imax is 16k, its also a display.

I'd expect it to come out eventually, but maybe they're just trying to drive people looking for a 5k display towards the imac before that happens.

Makes sense. Id be tempted from my LG 34UM95-P, although only if they want back to a Matte display like the older Cinema displays.

Anyone else wanted a 32inch iMac?

This is a bit of semantics. The iMac has one of the world's highest resolution displays. The way Apple states it implies singular as if it is the only one.

Also if you want to get technical, Sharp has had an 8K display since 2012. http://www.gizmowatch.com/sharps-8k-7680x4320-ultra-hd-lcd-heads-turn-ces.html

If Apple were to ever release 5k Thunderbolt displays, how competitive do you think they'd be? $1500?

They didn't say it was the first, this OP has an air of bias about him.

For all you know it could be the same panel.

Disappointed about the lack of retina MacBook Airs and the infamous "one last thing".

Still no retina airs.....*sigh*

i like Apple and the products they make.  Pushing the consumer computing level upwards.  Apple and non-Apple are creating better products for us, the end consumer.  That is why I love free markets and competitive markets because the consumer gets to participate and 'usually' gets better products out of it.
