Mr Verma, who was 18 at the time, was arrested. He was kept in a police cell for two days and was later released on bail, the court was told.

Back in the UK, he was questioned by the British intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6, before he returned home to Orpington, Kent.

Appearing in court on Monday, Mr Verma - who is now studying economics at Bath University - said the message was "a joke in a private group setting".

"It was just sent to my friends I was travelling with on the day," he said.

Pressed about the purpose of the message, Mr Verma said: "Since school, it's been a joke because of my features... It was just to make people laugh."

 

My thoughts

How did they read the message if it was end-to-end encrypted? Should be be made to pay for the £19k fees as it was a private message and a joke to his friends? I'm interested to see how it plays out in the next couple of days.

Encryption doesn't matter when you hand the keys to the authorities.

That's also possible... the article only says it was "assumed" the message was read through the wifi network:

TSA really isn’t bad at all. I fly way more than the average person. If you know what to do as a person then suddenly TSA are people too and most often you can get them joking with you.

How often do you explain your inside jokes to those who are already in on it? Not really that often, if at all i'm guessing.

In the article he said it was a joke among his friends since school AKA a inside joke. 

For anyone NOT in on it the words of the joke itself was explicit. A direct bomb threat.

 

So should the authorities just wait around while they read through years of chat history and pray that this one wasn't real?

People jokingly making bomb threats in public are arrested for creating disturbance and fear and its usually pretty clear for the police its not real, but its the ones happening in private forums that ar the dangerous ones and to be taken really serious.

If they scrambled jet interceptors every time anyone says anything that might be considered threatening, despite no prior history of doing anything wrong and no other signs of it being a serious threat, then you'd have them in the air 24/7. The attack that caused airport security to be the way it is was carried out by people who were already known to law enforcement and could (and should) have been stopped upon checking their documents; cases of people getting through modern airport security and carrying out any kind of attack currently sit squarely at 0 as far as I know.

 

Also I'm curious what fighter jets are supposed to do about a passenger trying to blow up the plane. If anything they're more likely to cause someone with a bomb to panic and decide to just do it. You can't even enter pilot cabins from the outside anymore so something like the WTC attack is just not possible; at worst you have a hostage situation, which again is not helped by jet fighters.

 

Meanwhile anyone can just walk on a train and blow it up with nothing stopping them. You tell me if this makes any sense to you.

Yeah, if you shout it out at the airport, of course, you're causing public distress and panic. Not so with a text chat. If it's an in depth investigation then yes, chat logs can be used as indicators and possibly evidence in a trial, but it's never a single message immediately triggering a full force response... at most I could have seen him be briefly detained on arrival.

I don't see anything wrong with making an example out of someone in the current "It's just a prank bro" mind set. "It's just a (prank, joke etc.)" has people thinking they can just slap that on anything and become immune to getting in trouble.

Please don't fall for the E2EE marketing fluff.  Just because things are not E2EE does not mean they are not encrypted

His friend likely also as a joke sent the message to authorities (like the joke being that he would be held up at security without realizing) or his friend took it a bit more seriously and told the authorities about it...and his friend doesn't want to get in trouble so he's pretending that he wasn't the one who told.

 

It could also be that Snapchat might have something in place that auto-flags messages relating to bomb when in the airport.

 

Overall it's unlikely the "public wifi" was the culprit...I've seen the IT department at airports and had to deal with them, they most likely don't have the skill set to properly analyze that kind of traffic anyways.

They 100% would with no prior history scramble jets to intercept this kind of threat, 100% every time no matter your prior history.

 

All they need is verification that you had actually made the statement; and a friend reporting you would be more than enough for them to do it every single time.

 

Not having a current attack doesn't mean people can get through modern airport security, there has already been documented cases of tests done where they did manage to slip through security without getting checked.  Every time there was a bomber the procedures were always updated to better reflect that kind of attack...except the problem is given enough time people will find a way/holes in security.

 

Honestly, a lot of airport security I would say is almost for "show".  While it would in theory prevent things, it doesn't do nearly as good of a job as many would think (and it taxes the employees to the point of making mistakes).  I know this because I know someone who accidently left a knife on his carry-on and it wasn't caught...he realized halfway through the flight and of course was super nervous that someone might see it.

The 737 Max 9  shows you can.  All you need is a rapid cabin depressurization and the door by design apparently will open to prevent the pressure differential between the cockpit and cabin (at least early statements appears this was a design in place that Boeing just never informed pilots about).

 

You also need to factor in that you cannot be sure a pilot might not be involved

I call bullshit on the message being intercepted and read because he was on a public WiFi.

Even if it was an open and public network, you still can't read Snapchat messages because they are encrypted. Something else happened.

 

 

Anyway, the moral of the story is that it is a bad idea to joke about how you're a terrorist and planning on blowing planes up.

Airport security isn't going to assume it is "just a teenager making jokes" if there's even the remote chance they could be wrong. There's too much at stake.
