Bethesda.net Launcher Says Goodbye

The Blue Cryptid

Summary

Bethesda will be shutting down Bethesda.net servers and allowing users to migrate their games and data to Steam starting in April.

Quote (From an E-Mail sent out by Bethesda)

Quote

"We’re saying goodbye to the Bethesda.net Launcher this year. We would like to thank you for your support and assure you that all of your games are safe. If you’re not playing PC games through the Bethesda.net launcher then your work is done here. Thanks for reading! If you do have games through the Bethesda.net launcher, don’t worry. Starting in early April you’ll be able to migrate your games and Wallet to your Steam account."

My thoughts

While I don't like the market narrowing for gaming platforms, I have to admit that Steam is my preferred service and it'll be nice to not have to launch a different program just to play my Bethesda games I got on sale that ended up being for that launcher. I just feel, like Blizzard, that the Bethesda.net Launcher wasn't very useful as its catalog was just a few Bethesda games. I'm wondering if this is part of Microsoft's acquisition, eventually moving some of the titles to Game Pass.

You don't have to use them? Well... Ok some games you buy on Steam still force you to use Origin, etc. However I know Epic for example, I don't use. I'd rather buy a game on Steam than use Epic (for "free" games). For exclusive games, I just don't play them. Vote with your wallet.

Tbh it makes sense that they would shut it down seeing as they were bought by Microsoft so it seems weird to have a store front for a small section of games when they can just be on Microsofts store and steam. Microsoft probably was the one who pushed for them to shut it down tbh.

You are right, most likely was Microsofts call. But I am still glad that it won't be around anymore

yea, less competition, how could that possibly go wrong?

Why is it so hard to get together and build a MoviesAnywhere-like platform for games? Use the freaking storefront you want, and move your games across them as you like.

At least EA has or had? A 2 week return window regardless of how much you played.

You already can https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4B8B-9697-2338-40EC

or just put all your game shortcuts into a single folder.

Pretty sure that EA made their games available on steam right?

Nah this is one of the few instances that less competition is a good thing. Steam is less shit than most of the other launchers anyways and if they go rouge it wouldn't be hard for those companies to restart their launchers. I personally don't want to deal with 5-6 launchers with some only existing to play one game

Also you guys are forgetting about xbox, they have their own launcher with gamepass as well.

No one likes those shitty launchers yet they still exist. All ran by BILLION dollar companies... that means they can never go out of business no matter how many of you "vote with your wallet".

Because people don't want stores that only exist as DRM.

The thing that sucks about EA Origin and Ubisoft UPlay is that they are DRM and the multiplayer requirement. So if you want to play a game that uses either of these, you can only play then with others on the SAME platform. So PC players get stuck with PC players. Console players don't get to play with PC players, or any other console players.

It really wasn’t competition. No single-publisher launcher is ever going to be competition to Steam. EGS is the closest we have and even that is a pretty far 2nd place really only surviving because Epic has bottomless pockets. While Epic continues to do the bare minimum to improve their store it’s going to remain that way, no matter how much they spend on timed exclusives.

Agreed. Almost all launchers that aren't Steam mainly just provide their own games rather than acting as a "marketplace" like Steam and EGS. The way I see things going it's gonna end up being Steam and Epic holding the status quo while things like GreenManGaming, Humble, and Fanatical become more popular for alternate purchasing avenues.

Just here for some fun.
