Nvidia is launching its new RTX A2000 GPU today, designed for professional workstations. It’s Nvidia’s smallest Ampere-based GPU so far and can easily squeeze into small form factor workstations. Like Nvidia’s old Quadro cards, the RTX A2000 is designed primarily for professionals who want to leverage ray tracing and Nvidia’s AI capabilities, and it’s the latest in a line of A-series GPUs.

The RTX A2000 can deliver 8 teraflops of GPU performance, coupled with 3328 CUDA cores, 6GB of GDDR6 memory with ECC, and a memory clock of 6001Mhz. That makes it look more capable on paper than something like Nvidia’s RTX 3050 laptop GPU. It also only consumes 70 watts of power, so it’s very power-efficient.

The RTX A2000 is based on Nvidia’s latest Ampere architecture and is designed to boost performance in 3D modeling and rendering software like Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, and more. It includes second-generation RT cores, third-generation tensor cores for AI tools, and PCIe 4 support.

Its compact, low-profile design includes a single blower and four DisplayPort 1.4 ports at the rear, making it ideal for workstations with multiple monitors. Nvidia is aiming the RTX A2000 at those working remotely, helping power 3D design, thanks to a form factor that can slot into workstations big and small. It’s just 2.7 inches tall and 6.6 inches long, matching the size of a miniature RTX 3060. Overall, the RTX A2000 is almost half the size of the giant RTX 3090.

Nvidia is working with a variety of partners to make the RTX A2000 available in workstations from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and many more. The RTX A2000 should debut from Nvidia partners in October, priced at around $450.

 

My thoughts

This card is especially tempting for me, A "Quadro" workstation card for ~450 USD with only a 70W TDP seems like a dream, especially for stuff like Dell optiplexes and other prebuilts. I have to say it's been a while since we got an mid-range professional level GPU from nVIDIA (at least with RT). But performance, efficiency, etc aside, I think we can all agree that it is smol and it is just plain cute.

bruh, all publications have made mistakes. Doesn't mean that it is trash. LTT has made a fair few mistakes in it's life, but it is still pretty good.

From a gaming perspective, it looks like a low power 3060.

  • Half the ram capacity, but gains ECC
  • Slower ram (-20% clock = bandwidth)
  • Slightly lower core count (-7%)
  • Lower core speed (max boost -32%)

But that 70W TBP means it has near universal system compatibility. You usually get better than linear efficiency scaling from lowering clocks, and gaming parts tend to run biased towards performance than efficiency. Gaming performance will be far below a 3060 but how much so will need testing. It'll probably be the most powerful GPU that doesn't need a PCIe power connector. The GTX 1650 is rated at 3 TFLOPs (FP32) and I don't think there are any good options on AMD side in this area, let me know if I'm overlooking something there.

on paper it sounds awesome considering its size and efficiency, but its a workstation card so the drivers arent really optimized for games right? so would it perform worse than a 3050? .

Being realistic gaming performance isn't going to vary that much from drivers. They're not that different. Can't compare to a 3050 until we get a 3050, other than the mobile one but they are different from desktop models.

Might be a nice mining GPU at 70W from factory. I bet you could tune it to 50W and I'm unsure if ECC has any benefits to mining but it may.

I would buy this for cute-factor alone 😛 In before it'll cost $1500 in practise because, well why not. I wonder how well it will perform in mining. On the other end stuff like this could take SFF gaming to a whole new level.

This card is especially tempting for me, A "Quadro" workstation card for ~450 USD with only a 70W TDP seems like a dream, especially for stuff like Dell optiplexes and other prebuilts. I have to say it's been a while since we got an mid-range professional level GPU from nVIDIA (at least with RT). But performance, efficiency, etc aside, I think we can all agree that it is smol and it is just plain cute.

 

Workstations usually have the 4000 series part. 2000 series parts are usually laptop parts.

3080 and 3090 have ECC on the G6x chip itself iirc, so there's that

 

From my experience, it's mixed

At times, it reduces hash rate if you crank it until it's unstable

 

At times (different cards) just outright crash the entire PC

I believe that the memory controller on the GPU die itself may be unstable, so ECC on the VRAM chip doesn't help in that case

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I don't think this card makes any sense for that price unless you absolutely need a very low power/small form-factor card or ECC.

The RTX 3060 makes way more sense for most workstation depending on what you do, mainly because of the doubled VRAM amount.

 

I was really considering this card before I saw the price... unfortunately.
