On windows 10, those big feature updates seem to update that info. My Win 10 VM lists is as this month, when I did the last update, even though it's from around ~2016, when it was an actual install before being demoted to being just a VM.

 

On my Win 7 VM I get 2017, which sounds about right:

So the Cpmpanies that made the parts, ship them quickly to you, and you Built the Rig. Then installed the OSes and needed Applications. And did all this in under 1 hour?

Lmao, I wish it was that easy...took a drive to Micro Center today which is a long, but pleasant drive. I put together the PC on top of the mobo box, with PSU connected, CPU and heatsink, RAM, SSD installed. Overall, it took about 1 hour to put together. I created the Windows ISO install media while I was building the PC and just plugged it in after confirming I reached BIOS. Installing Windows was a 5 minute job, with about 20 minutes to install the updates and then finally 10-15 minutes to install drivers.

My most recent Windows 10 workstation was installed 17 December 2020.

I used to do a clean install of Windows 10 whenever they released their twice a year massive update as a way of preventing any potential errors or trouble down the line due to Windows fucking up the update. But the recent few were so small in terms of actual changes that I didn't bother and it's working fine thus far.

 

Friend of mine recently had to do a clean install, because Windows never offered the latest Windows version to him. He was still on 1607, which came out in 2016 and for some reason wasn't compatible with a game he was trying to play. After installing the latest version (20H2 at the time), the game works fine. There were problem some other factors at play that prevented him from playing the game and not just the OS. But he was overdue for an update anyway.

First installed on my old FX desktop, moved it to my laptop after my GPU died, cloned to a HDD when my previous SSD died, cloned it back to my desktop on a new SSD after buying a new GPU, moved it over my current Ryzen desktop, and that's where it is at the moment.

It always seems like Arch installations either die after 6 months or live forever.

There's a Registry entry in "...Local_Machine" that gives the time of installation as seconds from 01/01/1970 which is some UNIX standard way of expressing this event.

I guess it's more like you either have enough troubleshooting experience to not fuck things up/easily fix any problem, or you don't and need to rely on reinstalls (or switch distros).

That's a unix timestamp, it's the default underlying timestamp format for most systems.

To be fair I've done an architecture change on the same install so just changing brand within the same architecture shouldn't pose any problem

 

But I must say this thread is kind of interesting, hardly any installs older than 5 years and most being less than 1 year old. 

 

Don't you guys get tired of always reconfiguring everything and reinstalling all software or are most people just running stock config and only Steam?

windows 10 on my desktop. 5.5 years, I've moved CPU platforms from a 6600k to a 2700x and will likely move again to a 5900x
I've moved back and forth on GPUs from red and green along with having my intel I GPU being used

I'd call myself lucky to have this install still be good.

My main PC I installed Windows 7 Pro SP1 when I bought it and I've been using it ever since. Copied OS from HDD to SSD in 2018 and that's it. I haven't changed the motherboard, just CPU, RAM, GPU, HDD/SSD, case, PSU and that's basically it. It's 9 years old at this point.

Also I'm using Windows XP Zune theme since 2013, that's why it looks like this.

Seems that system Infor is wrong, says 07/06/2020 Yet do not remember. New MB, Ram and CPU in November 2020 and just still used the same OS just removed old drivers with the new and it was since 2018 last time I did a clean install of windows 10.

At some point ill give W10 LTSC + Classic Shell + a Telemetry cleanup patch a go since theres been a few games releases recently that outright restrict themselves from running on W7.

 

The new Mechwarrior 5 DLC for example , while it will run, causes an error due to a missing Kernel dll thats only present when you install a known telemetry/data gathering Windows 7 update (KB4507456 iirc). Ironically, as i stated, its not actually needed to run the game. Its purely there to gather info.
