iPod Nano officially becomes obsolete.

The iPod Nano 7th generation becomes obsolete on Apple's list of vintage and obsolete products. This is the list of devices who are and are not available after five years of the release date.  The 7th generation of the iPod Nano was released in 2012 and was last of the iPod Nanos.

Nothing ever becomes "obsolete" anymore. 

 

There's an entire sub-culture of people who collect, catalogue, and still use, old products from the earliest games machines to the software...anything technology related, in fact.

 

Yes, it might be irrelevant or obsolete to the company who made it, but it still has a use.

rip, i had one and used it to death, now it lives in my drawer with a nearly dead battery cracked screen+lcd and a bend in the heavlily scratched casing. for how small it is it took alot of abuse (even with all that damage it is still kind of useable)

I thought CD players were rendered obsolete by the MP3 player by the mid-2000s before smartphones rendered the MP3 player obsolete?

 

As far as flashlights go, while it’s something in a pinch, they lack range (due to combination of no optics and modest brightness), are not especially quick to switch on, and are difficult to use as working lights due to an inconvenient form factor. There are some very inexpensive ( <$30) keychain flashlights that can illuminate a dark alley or entire bedrooms with ease that I would probably recommend everyone to carry, doubly so if you frequently travel at night. Again, while something is better than absolute nothing, in the event that I need to walk the side of a road in the dark, being able to see more than a few feet ahead is an absolute godsend.

Back then, I recorded episodes of Avatar the Last Airbender (manually cut the commercials due to memory card space) onto my Camcorder’s video input directly connected to the cable box. Then that got converted to import to my 3rd gen iPod Nano. 
 

It blew me away at the time to have entire TV episodes in my pocket.

Kind of sad to me in a way, I love my 6th gen iPod Nano. It's a good gym companion. That said, I am in the process of replacing it with something that has bluetooth.

I think if they gave the 6th gen a refresh, a little sleeker with some great options like BT and such, they could make it a very compelling companion for their gym oriented earbuds.

Except for the software and navigation experience, which Apple still dominates. Which shocks me. It's not that hard to make a good UI, and these companies have had literally decades.

Ehhh. It's the same old rule that's always been true. The jack of all trades is the master of none.

• A proper digital camera can (and will, given the price point) give better images.
• Dedicated MP3 players will give better sound than most phones.
• A handheld game console with proper physical buttons is still a superior experience.
• Nothing will beat a good old fashion compass. It won't leave you in a pinch if the battery dies.
• Cell phone levels are iffy at best. Again, nothing beats a standard level.

So while it's done a good job of getting rid of a lot, it's far from the best at doing any of them.

Some phones have a radio modem and use headphones as the antenna. So literal radios in phones. Still, a dedicated radio will still probably work even if you don't have cell service.

iPod nano’s were frequently used by people who couldn’t afford land lines. One could buy internet phone and then run on wifi.  They were also tiny which modern smartphones aren’t.  If they’re thought of as music players they’re kinda dumb.  It’s generally not what people used them for though. I’m sort of surprised they let them die.

that's te shuffle.  The nano was a basic clickwheel type player with lcd screen, but smaller than the standard ipod.

I personally still use a classic in my car. I like having a device with all my music stored on it that i can leave in there and if i want to, take it with me a use some normal headphones or aux cable to speakers.

 

I'm not a fan of filling up my phone with music. I don't really like wasting my battery and data and im quite precious about overcharging/charge-cycles on my phone by plugging it into the car all the time.

 

Frustratingly, the only kind of 'large capacity' music device that apple does now is the ipod touch... which is a bit pointless when you just want to stick it in an arm rest.

But i remember finding it pretty hard to find a reasonably priced large capacity music device in the past.

It's listed under vintage rather than obsolete in this list but for how long I'm not sure:

 

I assume obsolete to Apple simply means no more parts will be made, and no support other than community support. And the reliance to go second hand parts for repair until they're unfixable. Vintage means its old, sure, but they'll still receive hardware service in the Apple retail stores.

 

The article seems to have it wrong, here, just a bit. It's not considered obsolete yet. Silly wording on Independent's part.

I replaces the hard drive when SD cards got cheap and larger, 512GB iPod Classic baby

Now I'm just scourging eBay and Aliexpress for a good back plate that looks as close to the original as possible but has 512GB etched into it.

I had to replace my old 80gb classic because it died when i spilled tea on it.. it actually just turned on with a face.

then i had to fork out for a much larger capacity classic because i didn't want to pay for a touch.

it was hard to find something that was the right capacity with the right functionality.
