Asus x299 WS Sage m2 pointing out of board

My work has an older workstation and they are looking to update some of the storage. The workstation has a Asus x299 WS Sage motherboard which has two m.2 slots. One of the slots is normal (horizontal, pcie 3.0). However, one is pointing out of the board. I have no idea is this is normal or the purpose of this kind of slot? Are there some weird 90 degree m2 devices I don’t know about, or what is the purpose of this one of slot.

Asus loves to experiment with weird M.2 connectors. This is their proprietary M.2 adapter, @thrasher_565 shared a helpful video showing what that looks like.

For even weirder ones, Google the Asus "DIMM.2" which became available during their early gen threadripper boards if I recall

you might find an adapter some were didnt find it on ebay. looks like there a 3d print of it.

but you can also just buy a pcie m.2 mount so...

I got the same on my TUF mk2 board. A mechanical mount came with the board.

If you have spare PCIe slots and sufficient lanes from the CPU, you could get adapters for that instead. If you get one for a single M.2 it'll work as is. If you get one that supports up to 4 M.2 without controller, you'll have to set VROC Data support for that PCIe slot in BIOS to enable bifurication.
