Tech that refuses to die

pm128

I have an old scientific calculator from the 80s, I pop batteries in and it works.  I have my NES, Super Nintendo, GameBoy Pocket, those all still work also.  My N64 takes a hot minute to boot up games now, but it still works, keeps chugging along.

My main Wii's disc drive sounds angry AF, like it's pissed that you dare put a disc in.  But it still reads Wii and GC discs and plays games with zero issues.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

Computer and Game systems that made use of Plug In Cartridges have a great Advantage over those OD and Floppy Disks. Namely they still work. While it is common for old Floppies and Discs to be unreadable.

Why do you want a working calculator to die on you?

It’s gross and old (old and yellowing plastic). Screen is dim af. Buttons are sometimes unresponsive, but it still works. Don’t have a reason to switch unless this one finally dies.

Surely Scientific Calculation are not that expensive. Programmable one then?

It’s not really pricing issue, but rather, I just don’t want to spend the extra money on a new calculator that still “works.” As long as it can get me through school, it’s fine. Maybe I’ll get a better calculator in Uni.

I have Spectrum's Motorola DVRs that have very small HDDs and are about 10 years old. Somehow they still work. They're still Spectrum's official DVRs so there's no new model.

I know TIVOs have all the streaming capabilities like Netflix and what not. I was wanting to get a TIVO but it's a whole process to take the DVRs back and get cable cards whatever the heck those are.

Samsung RF 511 laptop (2nd gen dual core i5, gt 540m, usb 3) from 2011. Threw a SSD and Linux in it last week and it rocks. Also took away its 1tb 5400 rpm HDD as a temporary solution for my new laptop, and it works fine as well.

The FCC effectively killed cable cards when they said the cable co's no longer had to support them. All because streaming services are now alternatives. Silcom Dust ended its Cable card models of its Network TV Tuners.

Pencil and paper.  I love to use a tablet PC but pencil and paper will never fail me.   Nothing has a better pencil on paper feel than pencil on paper.

On a more technological note my mothers 2011 macbook is still going strong.  They don't make em like that anymore.

I'm still using my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini from ~2013 I think. Still on the original battery and pretty much never turn it off. I've never used a case protector and it's been dropped a lot so there's lots of bumps and bruises but the screen is still perfect and everything works.

Sad because I was forced to retire this perfectly good working phone shortly after I posted this because 3g went obsolete 😞

I wish I could post up my old dual CPU PIII server, but it actually died. 😧 I think it was repairable, but not easily, and by then, I had already decided to get a Core2Duo to replace it anyway.

Probably, but they aren't really "collectors pricing." They can be had for under $10 usually which seems like a great deal for a calculator that takes replaceable AA batteries, has a beautiful vacuum fluorescent display, and has linear switches. Maybe now is the time to invest! lol.

My LG Tribute 2 phone. I got it in 2016 and it's just worked since then. My Mom wants to get me a new phone for the sake of having shiny new things, but why replace a functioning device that I'm happy with.

Wait 3G is obsolete? Where is that? I'm in Bulgaria and here there is everything from 2G up to 5G and it works. There are regions where the best connection you can get is 2G, some places you get 3G, most places have 4G and I have no idea about 5G since I have nothing supporting it, but it does exist.
