AsRock Makes an x570 motherboard that supports only intel coolers

This motherboard was shown off at computex earlier this year along with the launch of x570. It's only in mini itx boards. Several of the tech tubers who did coverage at computex showed it off. They explained the reason for using the Intel 115x mounting system on the AMD mini-itx boards was that it took up less physical space on the motherboard than the AM4 socket mounting mechanism.

To add on, the AM4 mounting dimensions are 54x90mm. The 90mm part makes it difficult to fit SMDs above and below the socket. With the Intel mounting (75x75mm) they can place the VRMs between the socket and the top edge of the board.

Quote

Asrock’s X570 Phantom Gaming mini-ITX motherboard isn’t quite as crazy as some of these, but it still deserves a line in the record books. It’s an AMD motherboard that uses an Intel heatsink mounting system.

Idk why this even exists, most good coolers can be used with a mounting kit on any modern platform, and there's also no reason to use an Intel stock cooler on a ryzen cpu when the wraith coolers are so much better ( in terms of looks, sound, and performance ).

Quote

Intel and AMD CPU sockets (and CPUs) are different sizes. The CPU sockets sit at different heights above the motherboard. Heatsinks cross-compatibility is not uncommon, but manufacturers typically provide platform-specific mount kits for Intel and AMD. This may be why Asrock has published a specific list of known-compatible coolers — in this case, it probably isn’t a good idea to assume that any Intel LGA115X cooler will support an AMD CPU if mounted to said CPU using an Intel mounting kit. Common sense should serve you in good stead here — don’t overtighten anything when working with PCBs and fragile pins — but I would definitely lean on the side of being conservative if you choose to experiment with this motherboard.

However, this board does support Thunderbolt 3, which means that it is one of the first itx x570 motherboards to so so.

Hahaha yes, I actually need this. My next build is an ITX build for a friend with a coolermaster hyper T4 on his 4770k, of course he doesn't have the mounting for AMD.

On top of that, if this has custom compatible plastic clips for the prism and max, I can use my friend's wraith Max for my brother's new i7 7700, which would be Amazon.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

So I guess it's an ultra niche market then? People upgrading from old intel CPUs who also have an aftermarket cooler that they want to use.

I'd guess they did this as the Intel 115x mount footprint is smaller than the AM4 mount footprint, and they want to use the space saving for other things. The only caution I'd have is, is the top of the AM4 heat spreader at the same height above board as the Intel 115x?

I guess because AMx cooler mounting frame includes two bars around the CPU socket, taking up precious space? Apart from AMD coolers, 99.9% of coolers support both coolers anyway

I have several waterblocks that simply didn't come with AMD mounting brackets, because at the time I bought them no one bought AMD hardware and if you did you were obviously too poor for watercooling with a custom loop.  You could order the mounting brackets separately.

That's what I'll be doing. Though so I can mount my Coolermaster Eclipse and FX8350 cooler onto LGA1150 boards (the eclipse was only designed for AM2/LGA775, hence AMD to Intel brackets).

The smaller mount size in one direction makes sense.  This is also why we saw a couple boards before with the socket turned, because the AM4 is rather different in physical space in each direction when you also account for mounting.  While I would be disappointed to not be able to use the included cooler in the CPU box, this doesn't really bother me as long as that's made obvious.  Many small form factor cases end up requiring various custom cooling solutions to be great anyway.

I think you can get mounting kits for free from Noctua right? That'd reduce further the nice size if I'm not mistaken ?

Also lets be perfectly honest... Intel's mounting system is just plain better than AMDs. AM4's mounting system is a relic of a very long bygone era of tiny coolers and needs to be both improved and replaced.

Ignoring the discussion between LGA and PGA, it's just a more robust mount by default, and even once you remove the original plastic and use your own, you might as well just be making a better mount in the first place.

Just to be clear for those who are new to PC building. When they say only Intel coolers, it does not mean the el cheapo push pin ones that comes with some of the Intel cpus. They just mean any cpu cooler that uses Intel mounting.

If you mean using the clips, that needs to die, fast. I tried the Wraith Prism since I have it anyway, and mounting that was the worst cooler experience I had in a long time. Other AM4 mounts which attach directly to the backplate are fine. Even the Wraith Spire etc. mount directly to the backplate.

The holes on the board uses intel mounting specs. Some people think, they can only use intel stock coolers and nothing else, that is not the case. That board, can use both intel stock coolers and 3rd party coolers.

Basically the holes placement to install a cpu cooler is the same on any intel 115x board.
