Ummmmm, iOS 12 improved performance on older devices across the board.

Facts. Maybe not as snappy as iOS 10, but it's doing more now. Definitely snappier than iOS 11, that got a lot of complaints for eating perf IIRC, thus why they focused on optimization and QOL improvements with 12.

Also, aren't they holding a keynote in just a few days? I wonder why they didn't release them then. https://www.apple.com/apple-events/

Clearing the way for their video/news service announcements.  They don't want to spend half an hour talking new hardware (I don't think the new iPads are the only updates coming this week) before launching into TV shows and news subscriptions.

It kinda sucks that the newer ones doesn’t use USB C like the iPad Pro. Also, let’s not forget that the new iPad Air (A12 Fusion) costs $500 for 64 GB while I got my 2018 iPad 9.7” (A10 Fusion) for only $430 and that’s with 128 GB storage. Sure the new one is faster but majority of the iPad apps are optimized anyway for most iPad models.

I can attest that the initial release of iOS 12 was significantly better than the trainwreck named iOS 11 when it comes to performance.

We use a lot of ipads for sheet music at work and ios 12 made them all way worse. It helped my wife's iphone se, so it does help some, but "accross the board" is a little bit of a flamboyant statement.

The lack of a design refresh is pretty sad. Especially with Samsung offering a $399 tablet with modern bezels and USB C in the S5E coming out next month. The saving grace there is Samsung is giving it only a mid range SoC, while Apple has the best SoC available, if at $100 more in a worse form factor with a worse screen.

At least the Tablet market is getting interesting again.

I prefer the design with bezels for the iPad mini, using the old design it keeps the 3.5mm jack and TouchID and its kind of silly the iPad Pro doesn't have a 3.5mm jack. I think Samsung would have a chance at selling more tablets if they would give it their best SoC, even if the price increased $100 more.

I'm sceptical tbh, it doesn't seem like something apple would do. Although, they did have the backlash about slowing the OS "to conserve batteries" so it does make sense.

I'm happy on 10, I don't use it enough to justify wasting the data to update it

Apple's done this several time's. Snow Leopard was just a massive clean up of Leopard. Tiger was the finalization of each OS before it. El Capitan fixed many of the issues that plagued Yosemite. iOS 12 is at minimum as fast as iOS 10 on my iPhone 6 and it even made my X slightly faster. Was the most stable and quick beta branch I have ever used. It truly is worth the upgrade on anything that can run it.

Tough decision:
Ipad 2018 or Ipad air 2019 as a student? I learn for the slightly bigger one because I am concerned about the screen size.

I honestly wouldn't have expected them to refresh the iPad Mini at all.

Still one of the most unexciting Apple-related releases of recent times. They're basically using the 2017 10,5" iPad Pro shell with the current-gen iPhone Xs processor and position it as a mid-tier device between the base model iPad and the iPad Pro. Frankly, I'd either go full budget and buy the 2018 iPad for around 300€ or spent the extra and get an iPad Pro with the 120 Hz screen and the new pencil.

The iPad 2018 is still good in my opinion (I have it) though I would choose the new iPad Air because it is more ''future-proof''.

Absolutely the 2018 if 32gb is enough. If you need more storage, (<64gb) then it's a bit closer; if you need more than 64gb, then again, 2018.

As someone who has used an 8" Galaxy Note 8.0, 9.7" iPad Pro, 12.3" SP3, and 11" iPad Pro for note taking, anything around 10" is pretty comparable -- with the noticeable jumps being 8~ to 10~ and 10~ to 12~. But, I would also say that the extra unwieldly-ness of the 12"~ range makes the 10" range ideal for heavy note taking.

The Air will technically last longer, sure, but it's also more expensive by enough -- especially if the 32gb model is sufficient ($170 if you don't need more than 32gb storage) that the extra couple years you'll be able to get will be negated by the extra price you'll pay upfront.

So that means we now have...

The iPad Pro 12.9" (with A12X, USB Type-C, FaceID, and Apple Pencil Gen.2 support)

The iPad Pro 11" (with A12X, USB Type-C, FaceID, and Apple Pencil Gen.2 support)

The iPad Air 10.5" (with A12, lightning, TouchID, and Apple Pencil Gen.1 support)

The iPad Mini 7.9" (with A12, lightning, TouchID, and Apple Pencil Gen.1 support)

The iPad 9.7" (with A10, lightning, TouchID, and Apple Pencil Gen.1 support)

That's a confusing lineup. This also puts doubt in my mind that we'll be seeing iPhones with USB Type-C in the near future, given that Apple doesn't want to adopt it head on and keep it more niche. I'd say it's a weird move but honestly, I feel like Apple is just updating the iPad Mini finally and taking the old iPad Pro 10.5" chassis and calling it the iPad Air now that the "Pro" line of tablets are different.

It kind of depends on the storage you need, too. If you know 32GB won't be enough but 64GB would be, then the price difference between the two iPads isn't as large (128GB iPad for $429 vs. 64GB iPad Air for $499), but that's kind of a niche argument.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Thanks

Yes, 32 GB will be enough. I just looked it up and the Ipad air has 10cm more hight and 5 cm more width but is 83% more expensive. I will draw the sizes on a sheet of paper to see the difference and size with my own eyes. I could always use the saved money to buy a new one earlier if needed. I will think about it because I got some time.

I am leaning towards the Ipad.

Technically it will depend on how zoomed in you want text to be, but under average settings, I would say absolutely. Certainly jumping to 10.5" wouldn't offer much advantage.
