It's absolutely pathetic that 10nm. processors are delayed for the third time now. Their lack of creative names is also pathetic. Don't expect 10nm. processors on the desktop until the 11th Generation of Intel Core.

I wonder if they had to delay it because they couldn't get good yields with 6 core parts rather than 4 core parts.

What little information we have is that yields have recovered from the initial really, really bad state, but that's not the major problem now. 14nm++ is better than 10nm. Reading between the lines of what minimal information has gotten out, it seems like they can't clock as high. Since Cannonlake, the 10nm product, is simply a node-change of Kaby Lake/Coffee Lake, you're looking at products that clock lower & use roughly the same power. 

 

That's why Icelake is the first 10nm products we're getting from Intel. It's a "new" core design. Iteration of the "Core" design. Intel ended up in a bad space because of what happened with the Nodes. 14nm saw possibly the largest improvement over the course of its life (nearly the same as a full node shrink) and 10nm has been really, really bad for Intel. They need the clocks to get close enough that the improved uArch can use the IPC gains to be an improvement.
