Focus ST owner, used to have a 2019 Mercedes e class cabriolet as well

I did really like the Focus ST that I test drove one a couple years back... Was not a fan of the seats however. I'm a larger guy and it was just plain not comfortable. That and I have lots of reasons to stay away from Ford in general. I did like the 2016+ Civics, especially the SI, but at the time I wanted to much for my truck. Now have my wagon and I love it. Comfy, gets great mileage, tad sporty since its built on the Golf platform and since its a TDI 2 year unlimited mile warranty! That might come in handy for about 30k miles a year!

I'm assuming you're referring to the Recaro Seats? Yes the bolsters on them are VERY aggressive. I'm a really thin tall guy so I fit in between them perfectly, but I've heard many complaints about them as well. The base trim version actually has "regular" seats that look kinda sporty but are full cloth and have traditional seats and backs.

Yes, you are correct. I should have specified. The Recaro sears look far better, and are far more useful in a sporty car, but made for small people honestly. I’m 6’3” but broad and they just don’t work for someone of my stature. And with driving 700 miles a week, I need something I’m comfortable in lol

Common complaint I heard when I was looking into them (I'm also 6' 3" and broad, lol). They're supposed to be fine for tracking and stuff even if you are big, but not comfortable at all for commuting unless you fit them right. I have a 2002 F-150 now, that actually has insanely comfortable seats and they actually fit me really damn well, hold me in better than the ones on my 2002 Mountaineer did (there's something about my family and 2000-2006 Fords, lol). They're not sport seats at all, but hella nice for commuting.

Yeah that was my thoughts exactly. Part of the reason I like the 2017 Civi Si that I test drove. Seats were comfy and bolstered good for someone of my stature. 

 

Im honestly not not a ford fan, and my family has a 2002 Ford Excursion with the 7.3 diesel as well as a explorer and I had a 2006 ranger for all of 2 weeks before selling it to my brother. ... and I hate/hated all the interiors in them lol. My 13 gmc 1500 on 35s got the same mileage as the stock ranger... Seats are okay at best for comfort in my opinion now, the 00-06 Chevy interiors in their trucks, that’s where it’s at  

 

The VW car interiors are bigger guy friendly for sure. Took my wagon on a 1k mile road trip over the summer, was great. Heated seats kept the girl happy, and the gas mileage of no less than 43mpg was nice. Gotta love a tdi.

 I get uh... yes I get miles for... gas. Lol, I think it's probably somewhere around 18mpg, same as my Mountaineer was, and about the same as the 2000 Ranger I had for a bit. F150 has the 4.6L SOHC Modular V8, Mountaineer (was my first car) has the same V8 but the DOHC version, Ranger had the 4.0L V6. I've just had Fords (Mountaineer is just a sportier Explorer with a difference face and logo) since that's what my family has had for ages. They're reliable and parts are cheap af, though the engineers do love to just snort a line of coke and then get working. Most stuff goes easily until you wanna replace a radiator and find out they screwed it in from the front (they want you to remove the entire front bumper assembly) instead of the easily accessible back. They do other wacky stuff sometimes too, but overall they're decent. I've never really taken issue with the interiors, but I haven't been in many other makes for much more than a drive or two so I don't have a lot of interiors to compare. This specific truck is probably one of if not my favorite bodystyle ever on a truck though, so that helps:

Has the dual tailpipes too that AFAIK came on the Fx4 package (my dad got it used years ago, before I bought it off him), but they need to be replaced at some point, they're rusted and stuff just due to the heat cycling and age of the truck. 

My brother drives the honking big lads, he has a 2000s (I think 2006 or maybe 2008) F250 with I forget what size diesel boye, IIRC he's pulling 650HP and some horrifyingly large torque number out of that, then he got an older F350 dooley lately to spare his main truck, he goes a heck ton of towing both on and off road for his job.

Yeah the ranger I had was an FX4 model as well. 4.0 v6. With where I live in Cali and the roads I have to drive it’s a lot of hills so at best the ranger got like 15.5 combined mpg. Which sucks for Cali gas prices and 700 miles a week. My big truck did about 14.5, but again, mid travel truck on 35s. Ohh that mpg number was the low side of the first tank, second tank was closer to 47 mpg over 500 miles  

 

Im not a Ford guy for many reasons, namely they don’t seem to be building reliable engines anymore. Least where I live they flat out don’t seem to last in stock form or with some mods. The last good Diesel engine they made for big trucks was the 7.3 and that was a dog compared to any other mainstream diesel truck of the time. My brothers 6.7 Cummins in his 2018 ram 2500 is a beast though. Even with lower torque numbers than the others I’d still take it over the fords any-day, and over the Chevy option as well because I like the solid axle look and the dodge would be easier to delete the garbage emissions crap on any diesel now a days

Ooof. My dad thinks really highly of the Coyotes in newer trucks, IDK much about the diesels. The modulars have been reliable af though, IDK about their newer engines (all my fam's cars have the modulars with the exception of my dad's '88 GT 5.0 with a Windsor). I do know the CVTs on some newer cars have been shit and they made wacky decisions on some of the engines, haven't looked much into their reliability. 
 

How are the Cummins? I know they're loved by a ton of people, but like I said IDK much about the diesel side. Extent of my experience on either side is pretty much oil/brake changes and a fuel pump/rad swap with my dad anyways, haven't gone much deeper than that yet.

The 2.3 Eco boosts (used in the Mustang and Focus RS) had a lot of issues with the head gaskets, but the 2.0's (used in the ST) have actually been pretty solid. The only people that blow their engine stock are the people that floor it in 6th gear when they're at 40mph. Their transmissions are hit or miss though. Everything but the synchro gears are good, but oh man these damn synchros.... Some people go 150k+ miles with no issues, (modified) and some people have issues under 50k completely stock. I was unfortunate and got a bad 2nd gear at 22k miles and am STILL trying to get it repaired, not replaced (because my Ford dealer in their Infinite wisdom wont warranty a Focus ST if it has a fucking shift knob replaced, let alone any bolt on or tunes to the engine... and even if they did the same shitty synchro gears would be in the new transmission)

 

Definitely some issues with recent power train stuff, but I still love my car and wouldn't trade it in for many other cars on the road today within reason.

The 3.5 ecoboost I’ve heard a plethora of issues with, as the 5.0 coyote motors have recalls open and are known to drink oil and have piston slap issues. Their diesels are known to have a few engine issues as well. 

 

All of these engine issues makes me think that ford just can’t build a good motor aside from a couple small segments.

The Cummins now is great. Had a few growing pains when they went from the 5.9 to the 6.7 and again when they added DEF to the emissions system, but now they are all good. 

 

The new coyote motors in the 2018-2019 cars and trucks have some major issues. Like piston slap and drinking oil. Stock or modded.

That and multiple in my area in stock form needing to have heads pulled off before 100k... or throwing rods out of blocks with mild tunes... or absolutely crap mileage towing. And the terrible sound lmao
