Not sure how many of you watch Indycar, but as of 9PM EST Justin Wilson has succumbed to his injuries in Hospital. During Sunday's race at Pocono Raceway, Sage Karam (leader) spun out and collided into the wall, sending shrapnel everywhere. One of the larger pieces - the carbon-fibre nosecone - was coming down just as Wilson's car passed underneath. The resulting impact with his helmet knocked him unconscious and sent his car veering off to the left as his car came back onto the straightaway, where it hit a wall before coming to a stop. Even with modern advancements in single-seater safety, there is no guarantee to completely protect the driver in an open environment against an object such as a spring (See: Massa), let alone solid carbon bodywork. NASCAR driver Tony Stewart lent the medical crew a helicopter for an airlift, but the injuries proved too severe and an official statement was made.

My condolences to Wilson's friends, family, and all those who shared his passion for racing.

Edit: here's the official statement from his family from the hospital:

With deep sadness, the parents of Justin Wilson, Keith and Lynne, his wife Julia, and his brother Stefan share the news that Justin passed away today after succumbing to injuries suffered during the Verizon IndyCar event at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, August 23.

Justin was a loving father and devoted husband, as well as a highly competitive racing driver who was respected by his peers.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital, Pocono Raceway, Andretti Autosport, and the Verizon IndyCar Series as well as the entire racing community for the amazing outpouring of support from fans around the world.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wilson Children’s Fund care of INDYCAR.

Death is a weird thing Maldonado crashes all the time walking away from it with no problem. But these guys not so and they passed away. If it's your time to go nothing can stop you from facing death.

You know I really wanted a 240 back in 2010 and I gave up when everyone of them had big problems on Craigslist. I didn't want to deal with that much problems also they asked 4k for them. I wish I got something then since they are more expensive now

There aren't any in my area, but there are constantly some in good shape around 5 hours away. Willing to make the drive. It's a dream car of mine. No where near as crazy as what my family does for their cars.

They fly all the way down to California sometimes and drive the car back here to Northern Indiana

Yeah but do Ferrari have VTEC? I think NOT.

(Read it in Moog's voice)

Actually Ferrari does, it's just not called "VTEC" in their engines. ;)

VTEC (Variable valve Timing Electronic Control) - as Honda calls it, refers to the variable valve lift mechanism which basically changes from a mild/economic cam lobe profile to a larger/performance cam lobe profile at a set rpm point as the engine climbs through it's rev range. This broadens the torque band and optimizes performance across the rpm range. Ferrari implements their own variable valve lift mechanism(s)/technology in most or all of their engines (the 458 for sure). So in essence, yes, Ferrari does have VTEC aka variable valve lift. ;)

Yeah, I wasn't talking about valve/cam timing. Just about every engine today has that. I was talking about variable valve lift. Not many engines have this. ;)

The majority of British car nuts I know actually love American muscle. It was surprising to me.

Well my dad owned 20 or so muscle cars before i was born including a dodge super bee which makes me cry, he now owns a 77 Pontiac Trans am, along with that 2 of my cousins own Chevy Camaros. So yeah that's a pretty accurate observation.

Hachi hachi hachi.

Always had a thing for these (Corollas as they're called here) and the fact that some people here swap FA motors makes it an enticing ownership experience. In fact, I saw a 900hp F22A '86 not too long ago.

It annoys the heck out of me too, but at this point it's so ingrained in north american car culture that it's hard to correct it.

Have an 88 for your time. The dyno chart above belongs to this car.
