Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 150k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

I also see you're a fan of the S13 hatch. I love the way you think.

You're allowed to drive mopeds here with a normal drivers license. And those are limited to 50cc/4kW engines and 45 kph.

wow ....

I would like to see something like

16 years, old < 250cc 4 stroke or 100cc 2 stroke.

17 years, old < 600cc

18 and up, no restrictions.

But that's me.

well .... here in latvia we have tiered mc licenses

AM - 14yr and older and can be driven with a B license (car) is allowed to ride up to 50cc 45km/h

A1  - 16yr and older and can be driven with a B license (car) is allowed to ride up to 125cc 11kw

A2  - 18yr and older is allowed to ride up to 35Kw

A    - 24yr or after riding with A2 for 3 years is allowed to ride anything

and tbh this system is great ....

What does LTT think of the RC-F?

[snip]

^ Canada's first Rocketbunny car from last Saturday; the lighting made it a PITA to shoot. Would you believe it if I told you it was a wrap?

with every new generation fascia/exterior change on any car, I normally warm up to it over time and after seeing it in person on the road a few times

but the new Lexus fascia I am STILL not a fan of at all....blegh

Nike checkmarks everywhere! Even in the rich asian communities around me, the majority of Lexus households prefer to go for the RC350 F-Sport than the RC-F. TBH the RC350 looks pretty decent (minus the face) especially from the side and rear 3/4. It's just got that well-proportioned coupe styling that not many competitors can match.

Any recommended larger Alternators for a NA MX5?

A friend of mine keeps killing Alternators ever since he added Subs to his sound system. So a larger alternator is the solution coming to mind. Which one would you recommend?

Have you considered a big capacitor at the amp? Is he using under drive pulleys?

Even a high end alternator isn't going to be able to supply enough current at idle engine speeds for a decent sound system. A 75A alternator for instance is rated for about 1000w, but that is at like 5000RPM and not idle speeds. Idle is probably 1/3 of that output. Buffering the power draw with capacity can really alleviate the strain on the charging system.

A 6 cell lead-acid battery charges to about 12.6-12.8v at max, while the charging system runs above that voltage. Because of this, the amp is drawing all power solely from the alternator unless voltage at the amp terminals drops below battery voltage. Every big note shocks the voltage regulator on the alternator as it tries to maintain a constant voltage.

Using a capacitor can alleviate this shock to the voltage regulator. Capacitors will charge up to the same voltage as the alternator output unlike the battery and so those same huge notes will simply discharge the capacitor before it has a chance to shock the regulator in the alternator.

A capacitor won't do anything for constant power draws, but can make those instantaneous draws like what an amp does much easier on the charging system.

As far as alternators go, I usually use the cheap ones from the chain stores because they have awesome warranties. The only special alternator I ever used was from "Orange County Alternators" that a guy a NAPA ordered for me. I kept killing alternators because of a sound system (and a fuel pump that ran 100% duty cycle drawing a constant 20A). This alternator the dude ordered for me was for a Canadian model of my car and was rated for 90A instead of 75A. Daily running lights are required on Canadian car models so sometimes the alternators are a bit beefier (at least that was the case in my situation.

So here's a thought and a question, kinda cause of you @RevoltTrain:

If you managed to get one of your dream cars, for example a 240sx, would you realistically ever sell it for whatever reason?

Most car project owners will sell it eventually. I've heard a ton of people say "I'll never sell it" But then they sell it after a year to fund another project.

Personally i'll probably sell most of the ones i get after a while. Or put some into storage like jay leno

I'm in a dilemma as to which jacket I'm buying. I'm currently look at either the (1) Speed and Strength Under the Rader or (2) Icon Overlord Textile Jacket

What I'm concerned about is the different armor in these jackets. Now I know that these offer nowhere near the protection of high end products but it works for me. Both jackets have armor in the elbows, shoulders and back and are all CE approved.

The difference is that one comes with armor from Vault and the other comes with D3O armor. The vault armor appears to be some sort of foam type material while the D3O is a flexible material which hardens upon impact. Which one would you pick?

Here are videos showing the different armor for each jacket. It is somewhere halfway through the video.

Vault armor:

D3O armor:

60FPS Microwave

Intel Core i5-4670K | Galax GTX 970 EXOC | ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac | Team Elite 8GB 1600MHz | Gelid Black Edition | Samsung slowdown + WD Blue 1TB x2 | Cooler Master V550 | Corsair K65 + Logitech G100s | MasterCase Pro 3

If the material that hardens on impact really works id go for that. That is awesome

I have no experience with either of those jackets, but I love SBTG. They have taken a lot of my money over the years.

I've had some Icon gear in the past and have been happy with it for the price. My real advice is to go somewhere and try them on and see what fits YOU better. If find some manufactures fit me better than others.....

Kinda been talked about but this is a little twist...

What song makes you just want to put your foot down and just launch?

Been getting more into dubstep/chillstep lately. Here's a few tunes featuring Laura Brehm that make me want to "drop the hammer" while driving. (most of these build, so ya gotta listen for more than 30 seconds, ;) ).

Gotta throw some Muse in there too. :D

Why not the 1290 Super Adventure?

Or the BMW R1200GS Adventure?

These are not so off-roadish tho

^That's the reason right there.

Because the 1190 R is the more off-road oriented model. ;)

And there she goes.

It is a bit odd seeing a car take off like that without the typical manual dips forward when the driver shifts
