It has always been this way. One line comes out, another becomes revealed. It's not like Intel or AMD don't have schedules to excite over their products being released and those that are on the way.

Atm 2 lines are revealed, core count is all over the place (hasn't been an issue since sandy bridge) and nothing has actually launched yet...

And there's also the X299 line that has stupid cpu's and the high core-count ones are also revealed but not launched.

 

And there's also the possibility of a Z390 chipset which means, something, probably...

 

For the last 5-ish years it was clear what we could expect, similar stuff as the current gen, tiny IPC improvement and small OC boost (or very similar)

Now, no clue! Will pricing explode? Will core-count explode? Something will happen but what, we don't know.

AMD managed to launch a new product range that's very wide but easy to understand with actually a small amount of different products. If Intel is going to make a mess of it, it will hurt them in the long run.

 

If they decide to launch a 6C/6T cpu and a 4C/8T cpu i won't be surprised if it's going to be a tough choice and possibly a confusing line-up.

They don't need to launch 100+ cpu's again, a handful is enough.

 

I guess we'll see what intel is going to do...

For the last 5 years Intel's 4 cores have been better than AMD's 8 cores.  Even now with Ryzen 7, the old 7700 is not far behind in many area's.  Given it doesn't matter what we call ourselves (I.E enthusiasts, HEDT geeks, gamers etc) we are still just domestic consumers to Intel.  If they don't need to push out 8 cores to compete (both in sales and actual performance) then the only reason they are is for marketing image.   Most consumers buy the image/reputation not the product.

Intel has always kept their high-end CPU's on a separate platform as most general consumers don't need hexa-cores and higher core count CPU's. AMD's Ryzen is also "all over the place" offering an octa-core to gamers when the benefit over an R5-1600 is pretty much zero. As long as Intel doesn't recreate Haswell/SB's line-up, we're fine.

That's what lack of competition does. It's why those who upgrade to every new CPU platform receive minimal improvements. You should be able to keep an i5 for 6 years and an i7 for 8-9 years without truly needing an upgrade. Those who do CAD work would be fine with fast quad-core and those who edit video would have taken hexa-cores and octa-cores on the higher-tier line-ups.

The line-up seems fine since SKL, Haswell was a mess on the Intel side, but so was AMD's AM3/+ socket.

Ryzen 3 has a quad-core and a 4C/8T and R5 has the 1500 and 1600... AMD probably couldn't afford to segment, nor should they have, their line-up with many SKU's. If anything the X chips should probably have had 3.8GHz clocks or higher to make them more compelling.

I don't see that. AMD released an 8-core mainstream CPU in 2011,and they're still topping at 8 cores mainstream today. Al they have done is to come up with a new architecture that is much faster at the same core count as the older. Doesn't fit in this core war narrative to me.

It will only be a failure if it doesn't sell it sells at much lower profit margins than expected. Time will tell that. 

Also, this are rumors about a cpu to be released a year from now, not exactly  something competing with other Intel products today.

Citation needed. I need to see a single cpu from any manufacturer to die for reasons other than extreme overclocks gone wrong. 

Especially if we talk about a time frame as short as 2 years.

I think the idea that anyone "sat in their asses" is just poor understanding of his R&D work. Same applies to the flak AMD engineers got with Bulldozer. Pedimos sometimes talk like anyone with half a will could come up with a new, 20% gadget architecture in 6 months.

If only Intel would've been smart about this the whole time, and give us consumers 6 cores and 8 cores and beyond years ago at a normal price, they wouldn't need to do what they're doing now.

I can give you that, given the state of technology, product design is entirely a discretionary choice by manufacturers. Still, I don't they "weren't smart": in pretty sure that what they did was pretty much the most profitable option, and whatever the may need to do in the new scenario, it won't travel back in time and take the profits made away from them. 

O think Intel was unfortunately smart about this the whole time

The source of this article is confused.  There's going to be 8 core cannonlake probably around the end of 2018.  Icelake isn't far enough along to be anything before Q2 2019.

The yields will likely be worse so I would say probably not. They will likely price the gpu around 1800x pricing if not more. They think they have the better product so I don't think they will price their product at the same price. Intel has always priced their cpus higher if they have a performance advantage and I don't expect that to change any time soon.

Tiger Lake follows Icelake, but there's hope for Water Lake after Tiger Lake.  Although I'm more a fan of Panda Lake, sticking with the animal theme.

It's switching to Rapids after that. Sapphire Rapids is the only name we've seen so far on a roadmap.

Im going to chip in my software expertise. Games are largely serial because most game studios dont make their engines and most game engines will need to be redone to take advantage of manycore. I've learnt graphics programming and game programming. They both largely benefit from massively threading them, mainly having the GPU actually perform the work but you should blame the initial coders of the popular game engines in use today for their serialisation.

 

even before vulkan came out some games had already put openGL rendering on another core and some games have tried to use 2 cores to refresh the GPU for openGL rendering. Most of the developers in games arent coders, rather 3D designers, level designers, scripters.

Intel engineering team requested new keyboards for their PCs. Unfortunately, the keyboards are faulty and all keys input only F5.

Would explain all the refreshes...
