nope. my school offered keyboarding as an elective but i never took it. probably should have so i can refine my typing at an earlier age

i wish i can type quickly on mobile phone.. always seem to miss the mark, even with swipe gestures and word correction

I use 4 fingers on my left hand and 2 fingers on my right hand. It's weird and I want to use all of them

I currently play PUBG, help me get chicken dinner xD

Whole lot of practice like others have said.

 

I seriously did not start picking up touch typing until I played PSO ep1&2 (on the Gamecube, yes, there was a keyboard for that console).  Amazing how a MMORPG can force you to learn to type.

 

My school had typing class in High School which was mandatory.  Surprising, since the school was a little country school.

Yeah these weren't anything great but we found out if you held tab and shift and bashed the keyboard it would think you were typing it

Honestly, for me? Touch typing can go suck a big fat one, as I'm faster typing what I'm thinking during the train of thought and running both hands over the WHOLE keyboard instead of abusing my finger muscles and joints (even with lax ligaments) by forcing them to stay stationary whilst I need to utilise the array of keys.

 

Closest I get to "touch typing" is during gaming where most of the actions are automatic as 95% of my attention is focused on the game (particularly ones like Diablo or Overwatch) and it's just the one hand working a VERY select set of keys close together during gameplay (eg: Shift + 1-4 for D3, LeftCrtl/WSAD/Space + Shift/Q/E/R for Overwatch).

We had type things in elementary school where you had to learn to type. Over my subsequent years of computer use though, I have a much different style that is super custom and not anywhere close to the proper way you're taught.

When typing, I'm mostly looking at the keyboard as opposed to the display. I typically type on bursts, type out one sentence at some absurd speed (70 or so words/min would probably be a fair guess), then think of the next one. My keystrokes are already in my mind as I start typing, so errors are very few and far between, most caught by an unexpected finger placement as opposed to actually looking at the screen. 

 

Admittedly, I am very horrible at typing in real time, so any notes are either written short, or simply written on paper. I've a good enough memory that shortened notes would do the job though.

It totally depends on how efficient you are with your current typing situation. Although I learned touch typing in elementary school, it never stuck with me since I actually find it faster to use different combinations of fingers for different characters depending on what I happen to be typing. When I'm typing something long-form, like an article, blog post, or essay type of document, I'll utilize more fingers of course, but for shorter things, such as these forum posts, I usually only use 6 to 8 fingers at most.

 

Typing fast usually isn't the problem for people - it's the processing of information you want to type that slows you down.

 

For instance, we used All-The-Write-Type to learn touch typing, and I was slow as shit using it because they made you type out random garbage words and phrases, like ALFALFA FALALFA LAFALFA over and over again. This has never helped me in the real world, since I'm usually typing things out of my brain rather than trying to copy gibberish. However, if you're job involved transposing audio recordings or medical records, then I can certainly see how this skill would help you.

 

At the end of the day, it's about achieving the end result efficiently whilst still delivering a quality product, be it a marketing document for Red Bull or a university essay. It's up to you how you make this happen. I'd just practice on being able to type without looking at the keyboard and see where that gets you. I can type both on a physical keyboard and on Google's GBoard keyboard on Android without looking at the keyboard itself. Sure, sometimes I make mistakes, but correcting the few mistakes I make still takes less time than trying to type "properly."

There is a techquicky about qwerty vs Dvorak (might be slightly of on the last part).

yes. you can type way quicker once you learn it. takes way more time then 15h too, it takes weeks of continual practice. what i did to learn it was to just force myself to look at the screen instead of the keyboard and then start to feel our what did what and eventiually i lerned how to do it decently, the only thing i wished i had done was to learn DVORAK instead of QWERTY.... -_- 

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I mean, you could do what I do, and only go half way :P aka one hand uses all fingers, and other uses only one. Though, learning where everything is.. that takes some time.

I took it in high school, about 25 years ago (wow, that makes me feel kind of old...).  It's been a useful skill that's served me well over the years.  Well worth learning.
