a new type of shilling - game developer locks content to specific Intel i7 CPUs [updated]

source: https://steamcommunity.com/app/342180/discussions/0/152391285458876458/#c152391285459577448

after purchasing Arizona Sunshine (VR title) from Vertigo Games, customers found out the hard way two of the game's modes are locked out with no indication of why - they took to STEAM forums

what they found is extremely concerning, especially since this wasn't disclosed in advance:

zVgBvaV.png

so, it appears that Vertigo Games have struck a exclusivity deal with Intel for two of the game modes - the users with 5th (Broadwell), 6th (Skylake) and 7th (Kaby Lake) gen Core i7 CPUs get to play them, the rest will have to wait 3 months

---

update: 1H later modder unlocked the previous locked modes

---

update 2: developers open the game modes to everyone https://steamcommunity.com/games/342180/announcements/detail/289751074098300224

Quote

Thank you for all your feedback on the game. We developed the game to be as immersive and engaging as we could. While we love to hear about the things that delight you, we also take to heart the things that we can do better. It’s clear from your feedback many of you are not happy with the previously undisclosed modes being available only on certain higher end PCs. You are most important to us, and we hear your comments. We are unlocking these modes immediately to all players, and we hope you enjoy them.

We have recommended and still recommend using the Core i7 in order to maintain a constant 90FPS with advanced physics. We also realize that these chips cost money. We created bonus content that was not advertised as a reward for those of you who took us up on our recommendation.

We wanted you to feel it was worth it, but we also wanted everybody to be able to play these modes eventually. These surprise game modes were meant to be a reward for those players with high-end VR systems who were looking for the most immersive experience possible.

You are most important to us, and we hear and appreciate your comments. We are unlocking these modes to all players immediately via an automatic update, and we hope you enjoy them.

eh as long as everyone gets them eventually than i don't see anything wrong, what would be wrong is if intel was on purpose kneecapping amd systems. nvidia has been doing stuff like this for years (not sure about amd), helping the developer implement features etc which then make the game function way better on specific cards.

yah fuck people that game on a 4970k. Their systems are shit. They havne't given intel money recently.

And i5 customers, not enough money

I have a 5820k, 3770k, and 2600 as well as 2 sandy laptops in my office, and I HATE that I even have to give intel money for this exact reason.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

what nVidia is doing with GameWorks is way way way different that this case - GameWorks doesn't lock up content
