Experiences with non-techies

You like THOSE particular aspects of a console, and that's fine just don't claim that it's better than a pc because it's just not.

You seem to like the simplicity of a console, Um.. Steam? Have you tried it?

A pc can be used on a big Tv screen, and don't claim it's difficult or inconvenient just have steam start on windows startup and default to big picture mode, connect a controller (wired or wireless, ps3 xbox or even wii mote whatever you want) and you're set. Works like a charm

A PC makes up for not having used games in all around LOWER prices, and the amazing bundles such as the pay what you want HumbleBundle.

A PC can be used from the couch.

Not to mention the customization and (mod-ability? is that even a real word? well now it is) of pc.

A PC does what a console does better+much more.

Oh and one last thing, grab one of those, http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369439819&sr=8-1&keywords=wireless+keyboard+touchpad   and you can use a pc from the couch for more than gaming.

I'm not here to debate whether a console is better than a pc or vice versa, If you prefer a console, FINE just as I said, don't claim it's better because it's not.

lolwut. Sorry for the misunderstanding but I never said consoles were better than PCs. I mean its pretty obvious, if you look at my profile pic or my signature. :P

A women and her two daughters came into the phone repair shop I worked in. Both the daughters had ipod touch's and said that they couldn't install any apps because ios firmware was out of date and asked us to fix it for them. We simply updated the ipods through itunes. We charged them 40 dollars each.

that's the one thing that i like about technology ignorant individuals, we (the techies) can rip them off:D

oh, oh I have a good one, my sisters "tech master" boyfriend said that minecraft is a huge virus and that it is a problem on their laptop, (it is installed so my niece can play on my server) he says that the connection to my server in installing viruses and keeps uninstalling minecraft, but he never even looks twice at the limewire they use to get music and videos. and they don't even run any antivirus, they uninstalled the free version of avg I put on their laptop because it was a virus too according to him.

change the file permisions so they can't do anything to it:D it'll drive them insane if it keeps telling them "you don't have permissions to edit this file" i had files like that and figured out how to swap it but i doubt someone of their inteligence could do that...

I was complaining about my internet speeds (1 down, 0.2 up, 625ms latency <.<) and my uncle pipes in and says that he has 300 Mbps. I asked him if he had fibre and he replies: "No, I have normal internet, the company said it was 5 Mbps but I tricked them into giving me better internet because I bought a 300 Mbps router." I walked away and then died laughing...

One of the guys I worked with (another computer tech) used to talk about how his internet speed was 100 Mbps even though it was labeled as 5 Mbps or whatever. We are talking about 2004, nowhere had 100 Mbps connections at the time. How did he determine that speed? His modem was direct connected to his PC and the connection from his modem to his PC was 100 Mbps. I never got him to understand that was just the ethernet speed between the PC and Modem, not the actual internet speed.

my sister was complaining about her PC being slow (2.4ghz pentium 4 and 512mb ram) so i rummaged through my old parts, found her a 3.6ghz hyper threaded P4 775, asus board and 4gb ddr 400mhz, mobo has no onboard so i found her a £10 used GPU on ebay and told her to order it, she didn't bother, she still complains about the PC being slow!

The ones I hate are the ones who think they know about tech but really don't but still have attitude :P

For context, this conversation is taking place on a video of some alienware desktop... don't ask what I was doing there.  The guy is probably a troll but you know I don't mind wasting my time :)  I finished my classes for that day and besides, I was enjoying myself :P

Are you fucking kidding me? 6gb of 1333mhz ram.... Way to cheap out dell.... Like fucking hell 6 FUCKING GIGS!?! AND ITS NOT EVEN 1600MHZ RAM!! WTF

Lol you're fucking stupid

atom608 2 weeks ago
Explain to me how. I broght a toshiba laptop for $800 and it had 1gb gfx 6gb ram and that was a laptop and only $800

GlenwingKyros 6 days ago
So what? RAM doesn't do any processing. How much RAM your system or graphics card have has basically nothing to do with performance. If I gave you a system with 8GB of DDR3 1333 and another system with 64GB of DDR3 2400 that was otherwise the same, I guarantee you would not be able to tell the difference.

nad92422 4 days ago
uhh yeah it does

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
No, it doesn't. RAM is where the CPU stores data that it is actively working with.

nad92422 4 days ago
yeah it does

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
RAM does not do any processing. It is volatile, temporary data storage. bit.ly\10lZaKk. Show me your sources that tell you RAM does processing work. They are wrong.

nad92422 4 days ago
your sources are wrong everything on the internet is not true if you got to a actual college of technology no information is wrong what you learn

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
I'm a computer science major. How about an article by IBM for an educational institution? Read the second paragraph: bit.ly\12JyN6l

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
DRAM is made of individual cells each containing one transistor and one capacitor. The only thing they can do with 1 transistor is store one bit of data (either a value of 1 or 0). If you understood computer technology you would know that storing data is the only thing a DRAM module can do.

nad92422 4 days ago
thats not real looks like a cheap made webiste

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
It's the website of Carnegie Mellon University. I'm still waiting for you to tell me what makes you think RAM does any processing.

nad92422 4 days ago
faster ram can make a difference

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
Not on a gaming machine. Games are not RAM intensive. They stress primarily the GPU, which uses its own dedicated RAM. Benchmarks show again and again that going from DDR3 1600 to DDR3 2400 only results in a few fps difference, not even close to double digits. Which is exactly what I said originally. Any difference will likely be unnoticeable.

nad92422 4 days ago
who said anything about gaming im talking about overall

nad92422 4 days ago
im still waiting for you to tell me how you think 1333 is better than 2400 you will notice a difference even if it is small

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
I don't think 1333 is better than 2400. I don't know why you think that, since I never said that. What I said was: "My point was that that he was complaining about the RAM (6GB DDR3 1333) when any increase would likely be unnoticeable anyway". And no, the difference between 50 and 55fps is not something you will notice.

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
Who said anything about gaming? We're commenting on a video about a gaming machine. My original comment, which you initiated this conversation in response to, was directed toward someone complaining about the RAM in the machine featured in this video, and so my comments are in the context of RAM on this machine, which is intended for gaming.

nad92422 4 days ago
i never said anything about 50 to 55 fps

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
You said you would notice a difference. That's the difference. Actually not even that. bit.ly\ZQmBQ4

nad92422 4 days ago
im talking about over al..l but you will notice a difference in games a bit

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
Overall? Even then not really. Only specific applications that are very heavy on RAM (content creation, mostly) will see any benefit from faster RAM. Anyone besides content creation professionals won't see a benefit above 8GB of standard DDR3 1333/1600.

nad92422 4 days ago
you would notice a huge difference on the system maybe not as much is games

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
I've found that general system responsiveness benefits greatly from a faster hard drive; an SSD makes things much smoother. Once it's in the RAM there's really no slowdown. I never noticed a difference even between DDR2 800 and DDR3 1600 on my personal systems. Considering the system does not load the entire OS into the RAM at once, any delays opening menus or other "system responsiveness" slowdowns are due to hard drive access times and loading from the hard drive into the RAM, not the RAM itself.

nad92422 4 days ago
yeah overall 2400 is still faster than 1333

GlenwingKyros 4 days ago
Yes, on paper. But it's much more expensive and there are only limited situations where that speed comes into play. Coming back to my original response to the other guy's comment, faster RAM for a gaming machine is something that is not needed and does not matter.

nad92422 4 days ago
i noticed a difference

nad92422 4 days ago
thats what he thinks

At this point I stopped replying because I was starting to have a hard time figuring out what he was saying :P

ACtually, if you have an APU then faster RAM does increase the performance, because the iGPU uses the system RAM as graphics memory. 1866 MHZ is the slowest you should get, if you can afford faster you should get faster RAM (up to the point when you'd be spending as much as a graphics card on it, in which case you should, of course, just get a graphics card).

I know, I wasn't talking about in every situation; obviously faster RAM exists for a reason, it isn't completely pointless; however in the context of the video (gaming machine) it wouldn't have any effect.  And you won't be running an APU on a gaming machine :)

For one of my classes, we had to create a video about a cooking show. You had to bring the video in via a USB stick. Unfortunatley, half the class didn't know had to produce a video in windows movie maker and actually brought in the windows MOVIE MAKER FILE. Obviously it didn't work, and everyone was clueless. The teacher didn't know either and so I had to explain to half the class how to render a video -.-

One time a guy asked me "If you know so much about computers - what is the electrical resistance to a intel processor? I you don't know the answer you don't know anything." I laughed so hard. :DDD Then someone asked me: "Put android on my nokia 5320 xpressmusic please." My teacher uses Windows Media Player - she shows us a video of bees then to close it she presses go to library and then only closes the window. My grandma didn't shut her monitor off before the pc had turned off - she thought if she powered off the monitor the pc wouldn't work again next time. :D At least i explained how things work to her.

My 17 year old nephew still thinks that's the case with the monitor... even though I explained it to him a dozen times... -_-

A friend of mine always has some kind of tech problem that she tries to fix herself. Having tried everything, she comes to me and complains about it. The instant she complains, the problem fixes itself.

Simply complaining to me is enough to fix computer related problems B)

I used to work at a computer shop for IT support and service. Whenever something is wrong with the machine, they'll always ask if it's a virus or not. If the shortcut on the desktop is gone, they would think all of their data on the computer are gone. My mum isn't non-techy but she just double clicks on EVERYTHING she wants to open. That includes links and buttons on the web browser. She would double click on the Google searches to open them too and I got really annoyed watching her using the computer at some point of my life. I have another one but it's not really non-techies. My friend is a photographer but not much of a computer guy so he bought a netbook(yes, those 10-inches) and brought it to college. Apparently he actually used that netbook to edit photo and do his work. I remember him posting a comment which he thinks tiny computer are less powerful(true to some extent).

Ha! My ma does the exact same double click thing. No matter how hard I try to teach (and yes I mean teach, not shout) she still always does it. lol

Them - "hey I need advice on buying a computer" Me - "sure id be happy to help you pick something out or ill build a great computer for you" *week later* Them - "yeah, i just decided to buy a computer from Best Buy" Me "......................."

One time I had a friend ask me to meet him at Best Buy to help him pick out a computer. What a disaster, so many junk computers. Got him the best bang for the buck that I could but holy shit these retailers just shove garbage onto people that don't know better.

Pretty much, Friend wanted to buy a 300€ PC from lidl, Eventually talked him out of it and sat down and built one with him

Lol yeah anyone that knows me thinks I am God of computing, because I finally built a PC. If only building one was as hard as a lot of people think. XD

I built a PC for my younger brother. Worst mistake, he thinks I owe him a lifetimes worth of customer support or something.

That some's up another of my friends, every little issue that happens with his computer its straight on to me basically asking me to troubleshoot it and if I can't fix whatever it is he's done remotely he wants me to come over on call tech support for him.

That reminds me, friend from UK asked me to help her pick out a laptop that can play games (Minecraft, RS HD, and some other slightly more demanding, most of which were processor intensive, but she also expected to play games that were GPU intensive like Farcry 3) for less than 400 GBP. I repeatedly told her that for the price, she wouldn't find anything that could perform fairly well (I mean, lowest settings would be the best I'd expect from it); pretty slim choices from local retailers too. She insisted, I found a pretty good option (re-iterating that it'll be crap), she bought it, 2 months later, she tells me she "wants a better laptop".

I didn't attempt to spend too much time convincing her that for the price, a custom-built desktop would be the best choice. Sadly, I doubt she'd be able to put it together herself, and I doubt she knows anyone who could help her.
