My XPS 9575 (had the Intel AMD marriage in it) battery went bad. A few months after I bought a replacement battery from Dell. They ended up replacing the computer under warranty and I Got the 9500 10750 1650ti and love it. The 15 inch XPS several of my friends have many gens mostly 6th gen & 10th gen no issues at all save for the batteries and touchpads on the 10th gen but firmware update fixed that but the batts is not just a Dell issue.  Now if you’re talking they’re 13 inch XPS those are hot garbage. Soldered ram soldered SSD. That is too much like apple.

I don't have much experience with owning or having friends who have owned Dell laptops recently, other than the Vostro 1510 my mom had that died in 2 and a half years despite being taken very good care of (GeForce 8000M and 9000M series bad solder issue, it was basically a ticking time bomb and I don't blame Dell for that).

But watching GamersNexus's videos on Dell desktops + individual components (which are quite entertaining lol) and seeing other people's complaints about the physical trackpad issues on the XPS 15 and 17 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xhc3Rq_HZYE - around the 3 min mark) put both me and a friend off of Dell for when we purchased our laptops. The XPS 17, even the one with an i7 and a 3060, is a 3800$ laptop here. And to spend that amount of money without knowing whether you're going to get a lemon or not was not acceptable for either of us. Dell warranty is great, but that didn't make up for such a critical flaw in such an expensive product in my valuation. Particularly considering that the ROG Strix 17 I'm using now also has an i7 and a 1660Ti and is a 1200$ laptop that doesn't have such serious problems out of the gate.

yeah the 17" IMHO is a tad too soon for a C only computer...the next XPS17 should be good where it should be able to get 240W over 1 c port.  i avoided recommending them due to power limitations.

yeah haven't seen the 15" 9500 with that issue have 6 that i am aware of only issue was clicks registering (formware fixed and camre out shortly after the first 3 where bought (have not seen the wobble)

My friend had a pretty simple set of rules. I have a fairly large budget, I want to buy a premium laptop that works flawlessly, and I don't have the time to (or interest in) micromanaging anything - he ended up getting a MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip and I think he's pretty happy with his decision. It was probably less expensive than the XPS 17 wold have been, too.

EDIT :

Oh, I just remembered I have a 11-year old Inspiron with an i5-430M somewhere. That thing still works, so I guess +1 for Dell there.

Well, I ordered a 2GB Nvidia T400 from Amazon, but the seller ended up being out of stock, so I had to cancel the order. I'm debating whether or not to go with a T600 or grab a used Quadro M4000 from eBay. The T600 is newer and low profile (and doesn't require external power), but the M4000 has 8GB of VRAM. It's a full height card, but it's single slot. Decisions, decisions....

Anyone know how the T600 does in F@h? Whatever card I end up with will be used for folding, so that's why I ask.

image.png.ef2e60d5ca023f0b0f32187aa65748e4.png

I'm a little late but this is pretty typical of it's standard config. I have it installed mostly for transcoding on my server but it's folding for the month. Firmware tops the fan out at 60% and easily hits power limits through PCIe with no external power.

@Alex Atkin UK just wanted to share this with you, my Wallpaper Engine app crashes on the Surface every time I unplug it, stating that a "DX10 device could not be found". This is on a laptop with only an iGPU, so make of that what you will. I see it as additional proof of my idea earlier about GPUs temporarily shutting off when going from power to battery. And that's enough to crash F@h WUs if they're not paused by the switch to battery.

Its a fair point, except random WUs are crashing on AC and I'm sure I've pulled the power before without this problem.

The strangest part is how now I'm no longer CPU folding at the same time, its only rebooting once a day or so.

I think it was basically a joke to get attention, but you never know with people. I don't think normal Tesla's have 110V sockets but I would expect the CT/Semi will (when those things actually comes out that is), plus that won't stop someone from messing around with their car either, to do some funky janky setup to divert the superchargers power to the mining equipment shouldn't be very hard for someone who knows what they are doing. Dangerous sure, but not impossible.

I hope the concerned road safety authorities put a swift stop to this, if anyone tries anything of this sort. Although it doesn't make economic sense to risk a Tesla over crypto mining (solar panels are significantly cheaper and you get free power for far longer and with much greater convenience), I can already see the TikTok-era social media peeps trying something like this just for the attention.

The Tesla mining article could just be a fictitious proof of concept but most hybrid battery packs have a high voltage to 12v converter mounted on the battery itself since each hybrid battery design will have different voltages depending on which vehicle it came out of and cars electrical systems also run on 12v. I could see this being actually set up to work with that new Intel 12v standard where all the step down is on the motherboard and then just hook up a couple cables directly to the battery packs (with fuses for safety of course). It wouldn't be too hard to fashion up an adapter cable harness with additional PCIe power cables for a mining setup.

Their whole point is to use the free electric from the supercharger network (most Tesla Model S and X cars have unlimited free use of them...they just stopped that this year or last).  I think it is a genius way to abuse the system in a fully legal way, even if it was never the intent.

How they're pulling that much power into normal 120v in the car is a different question, so it is probably just a mock up to make a story unless they modded an earlier out of warranty vehicle with their own inverter(s).
