Now private suppliers like bullfrog power here likely wouldn't see any help (but they are basically nonexistent), but they make money by selling power to the grid plus a premium to users for the green energy.

So, I had a train of thought, and it lead me to this question (Note: This is literally entirely based on my knowledge of crypto mining, so I could be really really wrong): If a GPU is more powerful than a CPU in F@H, implying that F@H benefits from the parallization offered by GPUs, and seeing it has a relatively low VRAM requirement, Would it be possible to create and FPGA, and subsequently an ASIC, solely for F@H?

Odd, I didn't have to install that unless the method I used to install did it for me

 

I'd pull up my command history but turns out one of the PSU's has failed or come loose and the server won't power on with just 1 PSU, RIP. Is just Ubuntu Server 20.04 and followed the Nvidia default install instructions, driver first (460 I think) then CUDA install which upgraded that to 495 and put on CUDA 11.5.

Possible, but not probable.

F@H won't even run on all OS/GPUs as it should. So developing and making FPGA or ASIC would be very costly and with no real ROI.

Not really the best investment looking objectively.

I just hope one of the folding coins really take off and push dev time and money towards folding@Home in some way

For the record I've just gotten F@H working again on my old linux install. It was originally Ubuntu 19.10 that has followed with the half-yearly updates all the way to 21.10. I had installed F@H a year and a half or so ago, just tried again and it would give me the opencl device not found error, I just had to install nvidia-cuda-toolkit and it fired right up again. Obviously can't say what else is or is not there since it's been around so long, but the F@H version is still from back then with the missing Finish button when using F@H in the dark.

 

I can again run it during my work afternoon where I have to run my SFF PC on linux, happens my work block is about the same duration as one of the WUs I typically get

Dang, reading through this thread is crazy. I'm really glad I joined in this past summer(ish) folding event and have been having so much fun in this one, too! It actually works out perfectly with my college schedule right now anyways. Also seeing all the top talk is funny when I'm just hoping for top 110, hehe. Anyways, random ramble aside, thank y'all for being such a cool and fascinating community! Y'all have already considerably increased my computer knowledge (even if I still understand only 40% of the tech stuff in some posts).

Does that mean what I think it means? Crypto for folding? If so, that would be one of the few crypto systems I could get behind (though doing it for free still feels pretty good).
