That's what you think. I just found one of my GTX 1080's has been offline for the last 4 days. Windows Updates  It's back up and running now. Check my hourlies now.

Oh come on, I was trying to finish in top 10.  Right when I caved and played The Crew 2 on laptop too.

Well things will slow a bit, I tried to resume F@H on my laptop after gaming and it just reboots now.

Anyone remember how you get into safe mode now when you can't actually boot the PC because F@H starts in the background and reboots before you can turn it off?

if you cant get safemode via windows then you can do it via the power button.

 

turon on the PC, when you see the manufacter logo hold the power button until it shuts down(not sleep)

 

when you start it again it should give you the options

Apparently I got lucky, this last boot it remained paused, not sure why.

I've restarted CPU folding, see if it goes okay for that WU then try restarting GPU with CPU disabled.  Could very well be the laptop PSU failing with me pushing it so hard, it runs REALLY hot.  What are you willing to bet there's a dried up electrolytic cap in there.  Unfortunately it feels potted so no chance of repairing it if it is.

It certainly was fine in The Crew 2 so really threw me for a loop that it suddenly failed.  But of course nothing stresses the components/pulls watts quite like folding.

 

Looking through the logs I see completely different errors, one says Error BugCheck, a few say Critical Kernel-Power (not responding, crashed or lost power), and a ton of nvlddmkm Event 14 back to back before a reboot (is only noted as "EventLog previous shutdown unexpected" when it booted the next time) at one point.

 

I suppose one thing is if its the PSU, it should be stable on battery but not on AC which would be some indication (though not foolproof as obviously it wouldn't be pushing the hardware as hard on battery due to power limits).

CPU folding finished fine, GPU folding also going fine so far.  Will probably just keep CPU disabled to see if the instability occurs again with just GPU.

 

Actually scratch that, I just pulled the power cable out and plugged it back in, caused the WU to fail and reboot.  I hope its not the DC jack that has gone faulty causing it to randomly not supply enough current, that would potentially be a PITA to fix.

could be but hopefully its on a cable and not soldered to the board

Just can't think of any other reason pulling the DC out would cause a reboot as power profile, unless its some weird edge case where folding pulls so much power it can't adjust quick enough.  Its not like I make a habit of disconnecting the power cable when under a high load to know if its an issue, it certainly shouldn't be.

folding does put a lot of straign on the cpu/gpu.

 

whats the power profile like on your laptop?

 

usually when on battery it changes so maybe thats cause it to crash as cant give it enough?

This sort of behavior often happens in laptops with a battery or battery management unit going bad, as they use high burst pulls from the battery while adjusting power profiles of items, etc.  If you remember the old "iPhones slowing down on old batteries vs shutting down" thing, it would be a similar concept.

Its a few years old and been almost entirely plugged in (its kinda worthless on battery due to the power profile and 2 hours run time at best), so kinda expecting the battery to go bad.  I can understand that perhaps causing an issues when I pulled the plug if its not switching power profiles quick enough, but the initial crash I hadn't touched it.  In fact, I was turning on folding from FAHControl from another PC so nowhere near it.

Darn ....  6 of my most powerfull machines are down today due to a building power outage ... unlucky... Probably wont catch up with  Miker !!!   ;(

Pretty sure that's what's happened here - your laptop (if it's like mine) isn't able to or the designers didn't intend for it handle the peak power draw of CPU and GPU at a high load while on battery(unless you've tried this exact thing before and it worked fine then, I don't think we can determine whether this is a hardware problem or a design choice), and the momentary shutting off of the GPU to bring power consumption down probably causes F@h to stop running. My laptop's 1660Ti goes from 1365Mhz core, 6000Mhz VRAM to 810 core, 800/1000Mhz VRAM on battery and it does seem to temporarily stop and restart to get into that low power state. Folding@home WUs are also extremely sensitive to overclocks/changes in voltage etc. which also doesn't help matters.

If your only down for a day you'll still catch me no problem. Plus I've pullen back to more sane levels since you catching me seemed inevitable, plus having some stability issues on those machines.
