Poor Soldering, Not Amazon, Killed 24 EVGA RTX 3090 GPUs

GeForce RTX 3090 owners went into panic mode when a plethora of user reports claimed that New World was killing graphics cards left and right. Apparently, Amazon Games didn't implement a frame rate limiter in the main menu, which caused graphics cards to malfunction or die prematurely due to the high frame rates. There were alleged reports of Radeon and other Ampere-based SKUs suffering from the same problem, which isn't exclusive to the GeForce RTX 3090.

Amazon Games has since added a frame rate limiter to New World, and there hasn't been any new reports of precipitated deaths. EVGA shipped out replacements to the affected users and collected the bricked graphics cards for X-ray analysis.

Initially, many speculated that the graphics card's fan controller was the culprit for the premature failures. However, an EVGA spokesman has dispelled that theory. According to EVGA, the micro-controller may appear to be not working correctly due to the related noise on the i2c bus. This can cause third-party software, including HWiNFO or GPU-Z erroneously report that the fan controller wasn't working properly. EVGA's in-house Precision X1 software didn't have this problem. Nevertheless, EVGA has released a micro-controller update that will show the fan controller's correct operation on updated versions of the aforementioned third-party tools.

After analyzing the 24 deceased GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards, the company discovered that real issue was due to "poor workmanship." Apparently, the soldering around the graphics card's MOSFET circuits leaves much to desire.

EVGA claimed that the soldering problem only affects a handful of GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards that were part of the early production run in 2020. Although EVGA didn't reveal concrete numbers, the company affirmed that the affected batch is less than 1% of all the graphics cards that it has sold.

 

My thoughts

So, well, this is interesting. Apparently it's bad soldering. Well, I sincerely appreciate EVGA. They chose to replace broken GPUs even when the cause was unknown, and when it was found, they reported and admitted it instead of keeping it a secret. (Unlike a certain company with exploding components)

Yet another reason I dont really wanna buy a 3080 or 3080 ti unless I can track down an EVGA, even when they made a mistake with a product they owned it

EVGA is one of the many reasons I have no real desire to try an AMD card. They should be at the top of everyone's purchase list.

Other companies have issues as well. It's not like EVGA is the only one to experience them. Plus their warranty is second to none. I'd rather know that the issue will be dealt with without jumping through hoops.

They could leave general perception it was Amazon's game fault, but they owned the problem after doing a thorough research on what happened. Gotta respect that.

 

I'm still not a huge fan of their current card designs because I think their RTX 3000 coolers were designed by a moron (backplate with no cooling function, RGB clogged PCB passthrough, dumb gaps on side of fans, fans spinning in same direction and just overall cheap look and feel to them like their shroud and fans are made from recycled plastic crates), but still. They got into my narrow general selection when deciding for GeForce cards...

Their first batch of Hybrid coolers for 1080ti was also killing the cards.

While their customer support is top notch, I haven't dealt with so many HW issues ever as with EVGA. Maybe I'm just unlucky thought (this is the 3rd 1080ti I have from RMA).

I wasn't buying it either. Framerate can't possibly ever be a card killing event, even if it shoots to billion fps. We've seen that in many games, it's what causes coil whine, but to this date I never heard of a single card dying because of too high framerate. As it turns out it wasn't.

Died from high frame rate.. Thats a sad way to kill a card..

 

I remember there are many older titles with their loading screens basicly being unlimited fps, some times shooting it up to 9000 or 20000 fps.

Hopefully older cards dont die when gamers try their older games and find out the loading screen might just kill their gpu..

I remember there are many older titles with their loading screens basicly being unlimited fps, some times shooting it up to 9000 or 20000 fps.

Hopefully older cards dont die when gamers try their older games and find out the loading screen might just kill their gpu..

This is because 100% of games operating at 640x480 or higher are only designed for 60hz monitors/TV's, and busywait loops in these games are based around that timing loop. What causes this with "menu's" (built with IMGui, which is immediate mode) are improperly attached to the rendering pipeline, so when the menu is active it's rendering the unchanging menu as fast as the PC can render it.

 

That's why a frame-limiter needs to be built into the game engine, and relying on the graphics driver should be the last-resort fix.

 

It's not "making the GPU work extremely hard" but rather the rendering of the menu isn't being event-driven, it's basically a second engine on top of the first one.

 

This also goes for Flash-based menus, though flash is typically frame-rate locked regardless of the refresh rate, even on third-party flash runtimes.

 

At any rate, the proper fix is three-fold:

- Frame-limiting in graphics driver to pin the maximum framerate at the refresh rate of the connected display device as the default setting.

- Vsync settings by default to 60hz unless connected to a more capable monitor

- Timing loops to be de-coupled from the rendering, physics, audio, input and network pipelines so that the timing loop operates at any refresh/frame rate.

But Sapphire kinda had a different history which EVGA didn't afaik. Sapphire was actually a manufacturer of "Made by ATi" cards back in the day. Imagine like NVIDIA's Founder's Edition today, which are NVIDIA's own. I currently have no clue who makes them for NVIDIA specifically. I do know EVGA used to be highly praised for the quality of PCB's in the past. Are they manufacturers of FE cards?

Don't get me wrong, they responded well to this, but if their products were better then there wouldn't be issues such as these to even respond to

 

If it's the same issue I'm thinking of, it affected more than the 1080TI as I had a 1070 FTW card that I applied a fix kit to. However it was in certain situations and most users wouldn't see. EVGA again would exchange the cards with no issues, or if you preferred send you a free fix kit to install yourself. When I talked to them they even said if you messed up the install, no worries send the card back to them they would fix it.  That card is still running in my sons PC over at his Grandma's house.  I have plenty of other EVGA cards that have no issues.

Wait, weren't there also reports of other cards, including some from AMD, failing as well? (If I remember JayzTwoCents saying so)

Were those cards also affected by poor workmanship ?

Every brand has bad products, nice to see evga admit to it and offer everyone a replacement. If i can get a hold of a 3070ti or 3080 at a reasonable price I want it to be an evga card.
