Work, Repair some stuff for family and friends and ask some money for the jobs and I buy some used hardware and build computers and sell them with a llittle profit.

Saved up, put in some extra hours at work for a month or two, used my entertainment budget and bought cheaper beer (uuuggggg...). I had been planning to upgrade so the expense didn't come out of nowhere. I reused my peripherals (though I have since upgraded/replaced my keyboard in another planned expense) and my monitors (these are the next upgrade as they are more than 5 years old, still work well I just want to upgrade to 1440p 16:9 from 1050p 16:10). All in I spent a little less than $1650 on my new parts (specs in sig).

I quit photography and got myself a nice CPU MOBO and RAM. Thank god, cause photography is boring and pointless. Not to mention horribly expensive. My canon 70d costs me over a grand :P

Job & Budgeting. (Between my builds, upwards of $10,000)

Rather than buying all my components in one go i normally buy over several weeks or months, makes the whole experience painless.

 

I always ensure bills, mortgage and general savings come first, anything else saved goes towards my hobby.

Part of the money came from Christmas. Most of it, however, was from working over the summer.

Still working for my build through a part time job. It's not much money and it's going to take a while so I'm looking for something else. 

 

+1 to everyone saying buying piece by piece. I've been doing that for a long time because I'm not patient and buying it this way let's you see the fruits of your labor faster so you can see that you're actually working for something.

Savings throughout high school and various jobs that I got hired for. Lost track of cost, but I'd guess somewhere around $2,000 including the cost of my mods and my labour.

Family was going to buy a computer for $2000 I got a job for researching robotics and matched the price. Unfortunately California state tax fucked me over in getting a graphics card but I manage to borrow one and now I dont have it anymore. I'll buy one soon.

 

 

Could of spent more on a graphics card but I had to pay for school :)

I sold my kidneys on the black market in Nairobi to a Scotsman named Alistair.

 

Unfortunately I was then kidnapped off of the Somalian coast and had to pay my own ransom which depleted the funds.

 

This is why I have AMD.

I give myself a pc build budget per month. I take between $100 to $150 out per paycheck and set it aside.

I never really saved up specifically for my build. I'm more of a saver than a spender, so between allowance and birthday/christmas/doing odd jobs for family and friends, I built my $1200 pc!
