There aren't that many manufactures out there that deliver LTS or hell does things by the book. The point of this conversation is that manufactures and Google must improve their ability to give longer terms support so people don't have to get a new phone every 2 - 3 years. At the very least, it should be made possible to have phones last for like 5 years. The ROM argument, again is not something that can be considered, especially if we are talking about the regular consumer. 

 

Also wanna point for people having the opinion that a paid LTS option should be a thing, just no. It's the most unhelpful kind of argument out there. There are options out there that don't involve in the consumer giving more money to the manufacture.

i have a 6s and you can get those for €100 where i live. and it runs iOS 14 really well

People are annoyed by the process of updates, but they generally like getting new features and iPhone owners usually quite like the higher resale value their phones get.

I'm no fan of apple, but getting an iphone certainly has crossed my mind for when my current phone bites the dust. Though, I'm probably not a great sample since I primarily use my phone as a phone and not a mobile mini computer.

Fair enough, and truth there.

Even at 12.4.8 on my 32GB iPhone 6, I feel safer using it as a daily driver just for the pin+fingerprint reader combo, while my previous phone was a Huawei Y625 stuck on Android 4.4.2 unless I felt like bricking it with a root (I have it as a offline 2FA device now) which maybe? had a pin you could set instead of the swipe-to-unlock default.

 

If I have a cool $1-2K AUD by the end of 2021, I might treat myself with an iPhone 12 of some flavour, move most of my stuff to that and use the 6 as a offline 2FA device and factory reset the Huawei before giving it to my teleco's local shop for refurb or recyc as a phone for someone who's low-income or high-risk sorta thing.

Either a iPhone 12, or grab a 256GB iPad Pro 11" WiFi+Cell with pencil, magic keyboard & airbuds and take calls with that when sitting down (might invest in a Watch for on-the-move calls... dunno yet).

 

Talk to me 5-10 years ago about Apple and I was a vehement venomous anti-Apple/pro-Windows idiot (though I will say Windows' ONLY saving grace is most of the video game market. Linux is more reliable for general non-gaming workloads, especially office tasks, for 95% of users).

4-5 years ago I decided to give Apple a shot after grabbing a refurbed mid-2010 Macbook online as I needed a laptop as my previous laptop (Lenovo L520) was gone, plus being tempted by the refurbed items EBGames was selling, then I got my iPhone 6 and started *USING* it daily and things just fell in to place and 'clicked' and it's just so soothing to use iOS & macOS instead of Android & Windows as daily-drivers for non-gaming tasks that I'm considering getting an Apple Silicon iMac as my daily driver/editing rig when those come out.

 

I mean, recently my dad got a Ulefone Armour 6e with Android Pie. Setting it up and customising it so both he & I knew what was where was a fucking pain in the ASS, unintuitive and there's even shit we can't yeet off to clear the desktop and free some storage space, just put it in a folder and forget about it.

I can run android 10 on my 5x. (granted i had to unlock the boot loader and root, and use a custom ROM) BUT it can be done That said, it was slower, and buggy. so I want back to stock with a custom kernel..so i guess your point is valid and stands lol.

 

I want a new phone, I just dont like any of the current screen sizes. 5.0 or 5.2 inch is my ideal size. Also having worked with iOS I just prefer the android (actually the ability to change launchers, i use nova launcher.)

I went from Blackberry, to iphone back to blackberry then to android to windows phone and back to android. The first 4 iphones were a miserable experience for me, as soon and your internal storage hit a certain capacity used the phone became unuseable becasue of how slow it would respond to every thing. Wiping it never solved the issue either so I just never went back to iphone after the 4.

I don't see this coming true, it takes very little for Alphabet inc to turn on support for more devices when they can limit it to the Top 5 brands or whatever other decision they make. uprooting your entire mobile life to switch to apple or go from apple to android is something people will "consider" but to actually follow through and slug through the learning curve of a whole new system is extremely unlikely. 

 

if the survey worded the question as "would you consider switching to an iPhone 12 to have more security and privacy?" of course anyone but the deeply rooted android users would consider it, the framework of the question can be modified to guarantee a minimum desired response percentage.

It does happen though.  I did. Android even had a super killer app for me: pimlical.  I did NOT want to give up pimlical.  I have to make due with a lower quality app I also have to pay for.  I did it anyway though.  So some people at least are doing it.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, i'm saying it's unlikely to have the average lazy user who is on a 2 year cell plan and just goes to the next higher number phone from the same company for "zero dollars on another 2 year contract" to change their comfort zone unless there is a need greater than convenience and comfort.

Might be true. Might not. It’s the sort of thing that is traceable if you happen to own a cell phone company.  So there are people that know one way or the other.  Neither of them are us though.

I used my mate's iPhone 5S for about 3 weeks while my phone was in for repair a few years ago, and then I forced myself to use an iPhone 8 for 2 weeks last year. Both miserable experiences years apart.

 

My "walled garden" argument in this case is not being able to sideload apps not available from the App Store. Literally the definitely of a walled garden. The fact that I have to either jailbreak the device or be apart of the TestFlight programme to even have access to "non-sanctioned" apps is ridiculous. I use several apps that appear on neither the Play Store or App Store, and are only available as standalone APKs.

 

That's my biggest gripe with iOS, excluding all the other tiny annoyances in both design and restrictive functionality. The fact that some basic functionality like not being able to export contacts to your SIM card in iOS is absolutely ludicrous. Oh, you wanna move some contacts over from phone to phone without having to jump through needless hoops and iCloud is being a bitch? Tough luck.

It really all comes down to freedom. An Android device can truly do anything the hardware is capable of, because it will run any code I write for it. An iPhone won't.

 

The catch, of course, is that "anything" includes malicious activities. So the question is, are you willing to give up some of these freedom for more security?

 

Clearly you have decided that answer is yes, and I have decided that the answer is no... that is a personal choice, and I think persuading people to switch platforms often turns out rather futile.

its a worse case, I think the biggest threat to android right now is Huawei harmony OS, if they get developers on then Chinese market jumps then it would take a sizable chunk out of androids market share.
