MySpace admits losing 12 years of music

MySpace, one of the first online social networks, has apologised after a server migration caused a huge loss of data.


A message on its website says that "any photos, videos and audio files" uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available.

There had been complaints going back several months that links to music were no longer working.

The platform has waned in popularity since it was founded in 2003 but in its prime it attracted millions of users.

"As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from MySpace," the firm said in a statement.

"We apologize for the inconvenience."

I know a lot of people here are going to be too young to have used MySpace, especially in its hayday, but it was the place to be back in the mid '00s. MySpace was not only one of the first social networks, but also a great platform for music artists (especially upcoming artists) to upload and share their music. Two such artists who gathered fame were Arctic Monkeys and Enter Shikari, back from my nostalgic music back catalogue.

 

Despite MySpace falling off the face of the earth, this is still a major problem that by the sounds of it, was a massively mismanaged problem.

Stop and think a second, something is more than nothing.

Actually myspace makes more sense than Facebook if you care about privacy.

Just keeping this here as a A lot of normal people who aren't like us don't really do backups. Their computer will stop booting, they buy a new one and go "oh well". I've seen it happen so many times. I used Myspace back in the mid to late 1990s. It was owned by, I think, YourZ.com, and was a file storage site.  I think I remember them giving users 300 MB of free space, which at the time was a significant chunk of our HDD capacity.  (Can't remember if we were still on our original 40MB MFM HDD, or a 540MB IDE drive, was probably the latter.  I also see a couple mid/late 90s invoices for a 1.6GB and a 6.4GB drive, but I think they were for my brother's PC.)  An equivalent today for me would be something like 30-50 TB or so of free storage, I think.  (Not doing the exact math, but I have a bit over 90 TB of total capacity right now.)

 

I also checked it out a little as a social media site, but didn't use it much.  (I also remember some churches I know preaching against the site in the mid 2000s.  A lot of us are now on Facebook, including some of the same pastors.)

Tradewars 2002, for example.  I remember playing that in the early/mid 90s, and I also remember being caught by my parents at like 3am when I was supposed to be sleeping.  (I was 12 in 1993, for example.) One time my dad made my brother (about 7.5 years older than me) take the modem out of the computer.)

 

Wish there was a way on mobile to edit my previous reply and put this with it, rather than 2 consecutive replies.  This, on the other hand (consecutive / rapid-fire similar-topic posts), makes me feel like I'm spamming. :/ In the early 2000s I got banned from a HL1 forum network for spamming (too many short posts too quickly), so now I prefer making fewer but longer posts.

Crazy times on MySpace.  I remember there used to be some exploit in the Message boards where you just paste HTML code it would destroy the whole chat.

 

It was all sorts of crazy stuff. People would tile pictures as the wallpaper and even play sounds/music
