Nvidia is dropping 3D vision

Mesterial

VR will be next, followed by RTX shortly after.

These gimmicky things are always just a fad.

And before anyone says it, yes I know Nvidia don't make VR headsets nor support them in their drivers.

Nvidia actively supported 3D Vision for over a decade. I wouldn't call that a "fad".

Took them long enough.

Although, I've heard that it wasn't a bad system all-around; it worked best on third person games from what I've heard.

Yeah, it never seemed to work as well with first person titles. It wasn't outright bad, but I think the tech simply wasn't up to snuff for quicker paced first-person games. It was amazing in the first two Arkham games.

i think RTX i think will be very prevalent & present  in the future . it was the historic breakthrough in gaming when photo-realism was introduced into a game after a whole two decade of games showing cinematic cut scenes awkwardly being blended into game play, soon , we wont be able to tell a difference , no matter how many people cry over how expensive the hardware is , it is a solid feature with huge potential & it is going to be wired into games in the future like AA, TXAA like a necessity & it will make gaming better visually .

Imagine one day we see a game trailer , and it actually looks like it in real game play when we play it , that's an RTX milestone for me, it will take a few more years to get refined overtime to get to that level, but that's at-least 2 or 3  architectures ahead as of now in reality. but eitherways it's a huge step made by nvidia , even when they didn't have to, when AMD posed no threat , they still progressed and advanced without hesitation or asking for permission.

as for VR i dunno, it might run as an accessory i guess, like printer, rarely used, but needed, it will be there but in smaller volume i imagine.

Details separate people.

As far as I’m aware, the only 3D implementation to have any measure of success was the 3DS.

I think 3D only works when it adds depth to a movie or game, not to "stick our" but to make it feel like your looking into a world, and the screen is like a window into that world.

This reminds me of seeing avatar in theaters. It was so different compared to any other 3d movie I had seen previously because it didn't have things that jumped out at you but rather added depth to the scenes.

what for?

For?

Games, movies, dolphin emulator.

For gaming I use it for older games, my pc can not run at 120hz on some of the newer stuff.

Biggest problem with Nvidia's 3D tech was they explicitly disabled it for any program using OpenGL, because then you'd have no reason to buy a Quadro card for stereoscopic CAD! This meant a surprising number of games just wouldn't work in 3D, even if it were technically possible.

I enjoyed a few games with it. Trine 2, Euro Truck Sim 2, Dawn of War, Crysis, even Sonic Generations (that got a bit trippy mind). I think it was a pretty good forerunner to the VR headsets we have today, though both techs have "fidelity" problems... And comfort problems for people who already wear glasses.

For the last few years though... My 3D vision glasses have been gathering dust on top of my cupboards.

How many VR-games can one play with a keyboard+mouse? None? How many games does VR add depth-perception to that weren't built for VR? None? Oh, right.

  • 5 months later...

I used 3D Vision before, and every time I used it, it gave me headaches. I don't know why that's the case, but I can guess it had to do with two overlapping images for the left and right eyes being really screwy with my head ?‍♂️

Can you watch 3D blu-rays via a vr headset?  If so, IMO, nothing of value was lost.  If you can't, then this only really sucks for the few people who watch 3D blu-rays

I saw Tarzan in 3D. Some of the vista scenes in helicopters were pretty cool. Ironically I only saw it because I was thinking of blowing $100 on this.

I think the real issue here is that no new monitors support 3D anyways.

It's not really comparable.

I don't understand why people are celebrating this.

I never used 3D vision but I can see why some people love it.
