American telecommunications provider AT&T will soon be displaying fake "5G" icons on phones which are connected to the 4G LTE network.

AT&T confirmed to FierceWireless that it will soon begin changing the “LTE” indicator on some of its current Android phones to “5G E” in markets where the company now offers 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM and other advanced LTE network technologies.

AT&T customers will start to see a 5G logo appear in the corner of their smartphone next year — not because they’re using a 5G phone connected to a 5G network, but because AT&T is going to start pretending its most advanced 4G LTE tech is 5G.

 

According to FierceWireless, AT&T will display an icon reading “5G E” on newer phones that are connected to LTE in markets where the carrier has deployed a handful of speed boosting — but still definitively 4G — technologies. The “E,” displayed smaller than the rest of the logo, refers to “5G Evolution,” the carrier’s term for networks that aren’t quite 5G but are still faster than traditional LTE.

It’s an intentionally confusing and borderline deceptive move designed to win the coming advertising wars around 5G. By “upgrading” a bunch of customers’ phones to “5G” now, AT&T will have a multitude of people using a “5G” network months, if not more than a year, before everyone else.

At the moment there's a rush from providers and manufacturers to provide 5G enabled devices to the market to snap up important market share. AT&T is basically trying to confuse customers in to thinking AT&T is providing 5G services to its customers in the lucrative arms race that is mobile internet. Many customers are going to be misled in to thinking that AT&T is already providing, or can provide, them with 5G internet services when in reality they've just rebranded their 4G LTE service as "5GE".

But in all seriousness, why does US telecom suck? I'm a Canadian boy myself, and from what I hear, US providers are constantly trying to f*ck their consumers over.

Not trying they are. Paying over $240/month for spotty coverage and sub 10Mb/s is awesome...

they did this with 3G. They improved 3G with HSPA+ and complately got rid of the 3G logo. swapped it for 4G instead and adopted "LTE" as the logo for actual 4G LTE

Actually, no wireless carrier in the world should be calling LTE as 4G because it’s not. It’s more of a 3.9G because it doesn’t follow the said specs of actual 4G. The only two implementations that are real 4G is LTE-Advance and WiMax 2.

Damn, it's much different in the UK! My phone contract is SIM only, it's £25 ($31.64) for 40GB 4G+ data with 40Mbps down and 5Mbps up (Spotify Premium included for free although sometimes they charge me for it) with Vodafone. It was supposed to be £42 ($53.16) but I got it on a special offer.

I remember this happened in Australia when Apple sold the iPad + LTE as its namesake and had to revert to iPad when the government deemed this unlawful, as 4G wasn't available in AU then. Could potentially land AT&T in trouble, but unfortunately its more like a brand name, like cellotape, that they plan on calling their own technology, so its a grey bar.

I'm sure somebody would make a widget for it, but why do you need to know exactly? I only use my phone's data for things like watching videos, browsing the internet, e-mails, and managing servers so it doesn't matter to me which connection I'm on but I'm curious how knowing the connection type matters to people so I can see it from a different perspective (especially when carriers are able to change the icons to fit their needs).

Rather than bars and icons, I'd prefer to see signal strength in dBuV/m (or -dBm) and speed in PB/s (or maybe TB or GB/s).  (One of my older phones has cyanogenmod, and it has an option to show signal in -dBm instead of bars.)

 

And yes, GB/s or higher.  I would like an internet connection that's faster than my NVMe SSD (970 Evo), at minimum, and preferably faster than quad-channel DDR4-4600, or at least as fast as high-end GPU VRAM or level 1 CPU cache. :) (Oh, and a cap high enough so I'd never hit it even with 24/7 100% network utilization.)

 

And none of this "unlimited" "oh btw we throttle you after 50GB or cut you off entirely after 1 TB" or "yeah, we got rid of the one plus international cause people were using it as their main internet tethering with their PC"  ... well, YEAH, I want to be able to use mobile as my main ISP, so I'm not limited to just using my high speed at home, OR on my phone. ?

(I do use TMobile though, they seem to be the least bad of the carriers in my area at least from what I can tell, for now.  I do wish they had service in some rural / mountain areas that I go to sometimes, but I get absolutely NOTHING there - for example, near Crestline, CA, in the San Bernardino mountains in southern CA east / northeast of L.A.)

Hmm I actually don't know why it matters now you ask, I guess I just like to know mostly. One thing I can think of is when I see the icon change from 4G to 3G I know why my pages/videos weren't loading.

Ah, the joys of Murica and capitalism! Here I am, a non-Murican, having to make do with my 100Mbps up and 100Mbps down, no-throttling, no-datacaps mobile contract for 25€/month, which I tether to from my laptop and use as my main Internet-connection whenever I'm traveling without a single issue!

But in all seriousness, why does US telecom suck? I'm a Canadian boy myself, and from what I hear, US providers are constantly trying to f*ck their consumers over.
