technically a GPU is a form of ASIC

But then, couldn't you also argue that a CPU is a form os ASIC as well?

That kinda defeats the purpose of the specific distinction between ASICs and 'tradional' computing hardware (CPUs/GPUs).

a GPU has a very limited number of functions, we have just become good at using these functions for a number of things, unlike CPUs that have many individual instructions.

Well CPUs aren't application specific and for nearly 3 decades GPUs were only capable of graphics processing i.e. single application so an ASIC or ASSP. GPUs can now do a lot more, CPUs have ASIC like parts in them, AVX units, and overall things got messy as we found more uses for hardware designed to do certain functions, then along FPGAs which has torn up traditional thinking of ASICs. FPGAs are point in time ASICs, configurable as desired.

Okay, but ASICs take that approch to the next level. Instead of few instructions, high speed (GPUs), they are usually one (or few) instructions, ultimate speed.

Fine, I think both sides have a fair point in this discussion.

But most people (even ones from this tech forum presumably) don't immediately think of GPUs when they hear the word ASIC.

Can you tell us what hardware TheWasp is folding with, or is it a closely guarded secret? :P

Honestly, i don't know.

I woulnd't be surprised if he doesn't know himself. To keep his systems updated and running is labor-intensive, I would guess...

Howdy LTT-Brothers - TheWasp is here :)

I am folding with roundabout 14 PC-systems

Most of them equipped with 2 GPU's; from 1070Ti above to 2080Ti

And because you ask so nice i show you my last (allmost) finished case

AND - with the "download a new WU-bug" i do need way lesser energy.

As we all know, a IDLE-PC do not need much "juice" :(

I was wondering about that some time ago:

How much are you guys paying for electricity in your countries?

Here in germany it's around 0.25 EUR per kWh, that's roughly 0.27 USD.

I pay 0.165GBP per kWh/ with a 10% premium on top for 100% renewable. But, our hot water is electrically heated, not gas fired which pushes the power bill up some

FAH uses memory on the gpu more than the actual video engine right? so can I oc my gpu memory to get more ppd?

gpuz reports that my memory load is 18% while video engine load is 0% but the memory used is only like 350mb. (perf cap reason: pwr)

is this how it should be? I feel like the gpu could handle a lot more WU if it loaded the memory more

It uses the CUDA cores as far as im aware, as under TM when selecting cuda it shows 96-99% usage
