I have seen VEGA cards producing much batter PPD than when I had mine 2 years ago... Interesting...

Could be driver improvements maybe?  Or whoever is coding the WUs is doing a better job with AMD?  It was always odd to me that AMD wasn't well ahead in PPD vs nvidia because AMD cards had much higher compute ability (TFLOPS), which it would seem folding is, but perhaps they've finally found a way to tap into that instead of scaling with gaming performance.

Maybe, when I had my VEGA 64 I saw 600-650k PPD, these days I see 900K being reported by quite a few people.

I'm wondering if th eslew of AMD GPUs from the mining craze prompted some more interest in AMD for things like this as they became very cheap very quickly.

I think it also has to do with AMD touting their GPUs as being compute-focused, particularly Vega.

 

Also @Gorgon Spectrum said you had mentioned something about scripting resetting the client now and then to work-around the WU download bug. Do you have any insight on that?

Usually takes until you have more than ~300 ish points but definitely wait a day after first making an account and folding for the first time.

That’s tricky. In some cases when you get stuck on a download restarting the Folding service will wake it up again, other times you have to dump the WU and in the worst case a reboot is required.

 

First we’ed Have to define how to Measure that a slot is stuck. Say 10 minutes with a PPD of zero for that slot. Easy in a system with one slot but in systems with multiple slots (GPUs and CPUs) the slot index changes each time a slot gets a new WU so slot index one could be for GPU 0 or 1 depending on the time so you’d have to enumerate the slots first and the FAHClient reports in PyON (Python Object Notation) format (XML like superset of JSON) or you might dump all the slots potentially losing ongoing work from the other slots.

 

I scripted in BASH a method to reliable retrieve the PPD of a specific slot for my Zabbix monitoring software but it was a PITA requiring messing around with arrays to enumerate the slots.

 

I’ll likely just try setting a trigger on my Zabbix server to email me when a slot is producing below a specified level for a specific number of minutes which is easy enough to do then resolve any issues manually.

 

Whats bitten me in the ass is forgetting to check the statuses before I go to bed or go to work only to notice several hours later somethings stuck and I’ve lost a big chunk of production.

 

I do have faith that given the severity of the issue the Folding@Home researchers are motivated enough that they will get it fixed now that many people are affected.

I just found a pile of 12v, 40W, 240CFM fans. I feel as if I should somehow include them into a folding computer, but the noise they make is... substantial to say the least. I mean, technically, they're 120mm fans, so I could make a computer that replaces all of its air every second or so. Just a little PWM control and thermal throttling is no more.
