My Thoughts:

While not commonly talked about, adult content has propelled many a technology into mainstream use. Everything from VHS to the Internet. I'm sure regulations and laws will eventually be established especially with people doing other things behind the wheel (texting, watching movies), however it'll be interesting to see if fully autonomous car sales will be influenced by this industry.

Take a taxi (or cab, whatever you call it), replace the driver with a bot, done. I'm sure some will still prefer owning one for themselves though.

I am gonna have to say I don't expect people all of a sudden wanting to live in a car. I have a hard time believing people would rather sleep in a car vs a hotel unless it's a road trip. I mean who would want to sleep in a car while it's wandering around endlessly. Sounds like a dumb way to increace risk of getting hurt from an accident.

People already sleep in buses. There's several hotel buses that travel in California, and while Greyhound buses are not technically hotel buses, several people will definitely get or attempt to get shuteye when travelling long distances.

I literally just said that it would only make sense if you are traveling. Sleeping in a car that is just driving around for no reason just to sleep in it makes no sense.

The adult industry tends to make use of media and communication based technology extensively. A colleague once said if you want to know how to use the latest and greatest in web technology, look at what a porn site is doing.

 

Autonomous cars don't really seem to fit either. I mean... what would that get you? If it's just a scene in a car, go buy a limo and hope the chauffeur doesn't get distracted.

I am pretty sure people already use limos for that. I also think it's funny about how they talk about them becoming brothels when in reality it will be about as common as normal brothels are now meaning not very. Also People have sex in cars now so I could see it happening about as often.

If the porn industry didn't already have this idea they certainly do now.

 

Also the no porn on Beta thing is simply a myth. VHS won for a variety of reason.

 

1) JVC allowed third parties to create their own VHS designs massively reducing the cost (they bought the mechanism from JVC then could build anyting around it) while Sony enforced strict design requirements on manufacturers increasing the cost of both the machine and the tapes.

 

2) Compared to VHS machines Beta machines were hugely complicated making them both more expensive to produce and more importantly repair.

 

3) VHS tapes were twice as long as Beta ones and this made VHS more suitable for commercial use.

 

The simple fact is hardware rental companies preferred VHS as the machines were cheaper to buy and repair, movie studios preferred VHS as a full movie could fit on a single tape and movie rental shops preferred VHS as the tapes were cheaper to buy. Ultimately the market chose VHS and customers didn't really have a choice, if they wanted the cheaper machine and the latest blockbuster they chose VHS. Remember this was at a time when only the rich would have owned a machine of any type, the masses rented machines and were restricted by what the rental place offered.

 

It's the same story for Porn, Porn on Beta does exist but it's really rare because the industry chose VHS for the exact same reasons as I outlined above. Sony never disallowed Porn on Beta and there's zero evidence to prove to lack of porn had any impact on the sale of Beta machines.

I think most of the people who have sex in cars currently are couples. Usually parked though.

And the car will.shake while the deed is being. Imagine that car stuck in a traffic jam next to you.

 

Or imagine coming out of a car with a girl after everybody saw such a thing.

It is expected that by 2030 some cars may not even have steering wheels. Once cars reach Driving Autonomy Level 4 or especially 5, interaction with the car will no longer be required by the user. It might even be counter productive to let them interact with it (outside of inputting destinations). I can see a world where the car can fuel and drive itself, leaving the average rider to do things that we wouldn't do before.

 

Imagine if you have to drive 20 hours to see family. Right now, that's a 2 day drive at the very least. In theory, you could just rent a long distance travel vehicle, leave before you would typically go to bed, sleep in the car, and make stops as you need (food, toilet, shower?) - all without ever needing to make a major stop for a hotel room.

 

Self driving cars are expected to have a huge impact on the way we deal with cars, from ownership and insurance to other paradigms today.
