Introducing the Dell Ultrasharp 49

sdd15cdkqv4abpnpydmgbdkc5gb6t89w&box_cli

There are some big screens out in ultrawide land. We have LG's 5k 34" monitor (5120 x 2160), Samsung's massive 49" CHG90 (3840x1080) and now Dell is introducing their Dell Ultrasharp 49. A 49", 5120x1440 behemoth, measuring a slim 1215.1 x 458.6-548.6 x 252.6mm (WxHxD, that's 1.2m!!), being priced at $1699,99. It'll be available in the US from October 26th according to Dell. From their press release:

Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved Monitor (U4919DW) brings brilliance uninterrupted

Dell is introducing the world’s first 49-inch curved dual QHD monitor1 with the revolutionary ultra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio for seamless multi-screen productivity. Delivering an immersive experience, this expansive monitor is the ideal replacement for two 27-inch QHD monitors. The large onscreen space with 5120x1440 resolution and IPS technology allows users to view more content and see fine details with consistent color across a wide viewing angle.

Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved Monitor (U4919DW) will be available Oct. 26 in the U.S. starting at $1,699.99.

The Dell UltraSharp 49 Curved, 32 4K USB-C and 34 Curved USB-C monitors come with significant features. Picture-by-Picture allows for multi-tasking content from two different PCs. A built-in keyboard, video and mouse (KVM) help users toggle between and edit content using a single keyboard and mouse. This new portfolio of UltraSharp monitors also offers convenient USB-C connectivity that charges the connected laptop while transmitting data and video signals, all from one single cable to reduce cable clutter.

It will feature an IPS panel with 99% sRGB coverage, running at 60 Hz (what a surprise), 350 nits brightness and 5 or 8 ms GtG response time in fast and normal mode, respectively.

Connectivity wise, it all seems fine to me. According to PCGamer it'll have two HDMI 2.0 ports, a DP 1.4 port and USB-C for power, data and video. Besides they report there will be five USB 3.0 ports:

Quote

Dell's monitor uses an IPS panel with a 350 nits brightness rating, same as Samsung's 49-inch model. That's above average, though below the 400 nits that VESA requires for this DisplayHDR certification, as a point of reference. It also has a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time (gray to gray) in fast mode (8ms in normal mode), and offers 99 percent coverage of the sRGB color space.

Connectivity options include two HDMI 2.0 ports, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB-C (power, data, and video), to go along with five USB 3.0 downstream ports. Dell says users can connect two PC sources using built-in picture-by-picture and KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) features.

All these fancy new ultrawides really make me ready to move on from my 1080p display, but I think I still prefer a high Hz monitor for games. Such a modern day problem. My wallet disagrees however :P

What do you think of this new absolute unit of a monitor? Also with rumours of Philips releasing a similar one in the (near future). Will "desk PCs" get a new meaning? Put a touchscreen on them and they can basically be your desk.

It sure is, 1.2m wide. Just measured how it would look on my desk. It'ls literally almost desk-size in width xD  Thanks for the picture, should've thought of that.

Yeah high refresh rates still beat resolution for me, though it's close.

Refresh rate is hard dimishing returns in my experience owning multiple, but either way, that display would have to be tiny not to be way too low pixel density imho.

$1700 eh?  I'm not super up on the common costs of high end displays like this but that seems a bit high.  I remember price was the main issue with the previous one (CHG90).  For the price they were charging for what was basically half a 4K screen, you could buy 2 normal 4K screens and have some left over iirc lol.  I don't think this one is nearly as bad but... it's still bad I think.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

Dell's monitors have always felt a bit more expensive than average to me. They did look great however, when I saw them in person once (a normal 27" panel and a normal ultrawide). LG's 34WK95U is advertised for $1499, so add a bit of Dell tax and it's basically there I think.
