TL;DR:

http://www.website.com and http://website.com aren't always the same website. Potential security and usability concerns.

My Thoughts:

Chrome and Chromium have once again they should get to decide how a URL should be used instead of how it actually is and it appears their implimentation of it is extremely shoddy and insecure. They should roll back this change immediately.

Like Microsoft back when IE was the most used web browser, when the web browser has the largest market shares, they dictate the web and web standards, and they decide what is trivial or not. Other web browsers and websites (depending on the changes) must comply.

 

In this case it is a web browser feature, meaning websites must comply to it.

You can have any sub domains you want. It was always like this. but the standard and default one is "www".

But "www" subdomain will not show in Chrome specifically, for some reason.

Yeah, www is basicly just a common default subsite for a site and dates far back before "http://" was used to differenciate between protocols and it just stick. Even today it's not that rare to see sites that still use "the old" naming tree like for FTP-connection you use ftp.site.com HTTP-connection www.site.com alternative HTTP-connection www2.site.com (example for admin access) even though protocols and subsites are differentiated today like http:// site.com and ftp:// site.com and http:// subsite.site.com. Quite many platforms today generate default site as www.site.com and some don't generate site.com to redirect to www.site.com or vice versa.

 

This really wouldn't be a problem if it hasn't become a habit to use the www.-prefixes that were acctually needed in the early days to differentiate between protocols that sites used. And really they weren't even used long and they started to become habit because someone had a bright idea to use prefixes to state what kind of site is there. Like with www.site.com you would find just a normal site like a personal webpage, news.site.com you would find a news feed, ftp.site.com would get you a ftp interface to download nad upload files and so on.

 

So, yeah. www is only a subpage out of habit and if you look up even LMG doesn't really use it (www.linustechtips.com just redirects to linustechtips.com).

So there is a way around it for anyone still using the old www and www2 or www3 subs, but because of the way crome handles it they don't have a choice anymore?

If Chrome didn't diffrentiate between site.com and www.site.com there would be a HUGE problems. I think what they have done is that they hide "www." is the site has redirection between www.site.com and site.com because why not? Only sites that would have problems are ones with stupid enough webmasters that don't use hard redirection between www.site.com and site.com and don't use unified cookies between those. Meaning that the site really is site.com but if you type www.site.com you will see in the address "www." while the actual site.com is loaded and if there isn't unified cookies you can have different cookies for site.com and www.site.com while the site is totally the same (like if LMG used soft redirection / mirroring you could login to here with two different accounts with the same browser, you could signin with Account1 for linustechtips.com and with Account2 for www.linustechtips.com because there would be two different sets of cookies). But this can happen also elsewhere, like if site uses vBulletting you can have site.com/vb for forum and also have site.com/forum for the same forum and if you don't unify those cookies you end up with the same problem and the problem being that those cookies may mix up and you end up wanting to reply with the Account1 but because cookies got mixed up you replied with the Account2 and many many more like that.

It has to do with the variety of codecs that a web browser uses, which may or may not support hardware acceleration with your hardware. Some has it working on older hardware, other requires you to have the latest, but each video codec differs. Edge tend to fair the best in that specific regard.

I think this is blown a bit out of proportion. The www. is still there, if you click on the omnibox it reappears, it's just hidden during general browsing

For my websites I manage, I never use www, I dont see any reason to, and honestly, its outdated. I just set a domain record to forward all www subdomains to the normal http domain.

There is a major difference between using www.domain.com and just using domain.com - cookies! Omnomnomnom. OK no but seriously, as others have noted above, all cookies set on domain.com will not only pass through to www.domain.com, but also to abc.domain.com or superman.domain.com, posing a security risk since any of those subdomains could read that cookie data, or more frustratingly, it could prevent users from easily switching accounts.

Additionally, if you plan to scale your website using a host or CDN that requires setting up a CNAME record, you CANNOT do this with domain.com, but you can with www.domain.com due to the way DNS records work. At the end of the day, it's up to the web developer and website admin to decide what to use.

Because Chrome is using up 29% extra, so you only see 1% increase.
