Windows 10 "Lean" Edition in the works

A user by the name of Lucan on Twitter (no info on him), has discovered something pretty interesting on the installation of Windows 10 Redstone 5 (that is the update that is excepted to be release by the end of this year)

Windows 10 Lean, or as it is called once you install it: Windows CloudE (I guess they tried to avoid "Windows CE"). Whatever the official name of the OS edition will be (prob engineers picked the name, or having fun), this install of Windows 10 is 2GB less than Windows 10 Pro.

 

It includes Windows 10 + desktop shell experience, Edge, Store app, File Explorer, and maybe a few other things, but that is it. Not even the registry editor (Regedit.exe) is there, and there is no background (no idea if there is no wallpaper included, or that you cannot set one...), But Lucan says that the OS is NOT locked. He was able to copy regedit.exe from another Windows 10 machine, paste it in this Windows 10 Lean edition, and it runs perfectly fine, like if it was included with the OS.

 

He did notice that this version of Windows 10 is so lean that it does not include disk drive drivers. So you can't play CD's, or DVD's or Blu-Ray disks. You'll need to install the device drivers like we used to back in the old old old days of Windows and MS-DOS in order to make the drive work.

If I where to guess this could be 2 things:

  1. Windows 10 Lean, and that is it. No Windows Defender, no nothing, targeted for low powered devices  or try and fit in system with low storage options like 16GB for allowing the OS to be installed on ultra low end system (probably OEMs will put a 1 wallpaper instead of black).
     
  2. Windows Polaris project, As we know, Microsoft is hard at works at making Windows 10 into components that OEMs can customize (they can add/remove components), and this is a "in-the works" build getting there, where behind things, they are components, which we can't customize as of yet, and they included Shell32 (as CShell, what it will be replaced with eventually) is not ready yet, just to give something for internal testing.

I run Windows 10 on my laptop in power saving mode, despite it having a 940mx and i5-7200u. I'd really like to reinstall Windows with this Lean edition since I don't seem to do much other than watch YouTube videos, do word processing, and browse these forums.

 

If this is option 1, that's great. Absolutely great! If this is option 2, it's going to be like Windows 8.1 all over again.

How about remove cortana, the microsoft store, and all that garbage bloatware like candy crush and 3D paint no one uses.

Just keeping this here as a I clarified a bit point 2. No I mean that OEMs can choose if they want to add/remove:

 - Phone/SMS capabilities

 - Hyper-V capabilities

 - Win32 support or not

and things like that (those are examples from my ass, we don't know how it will actually work, and what can be added or removed by OEMs).

If you want a "lean" edition right now, use Win10 LTSB. It's Win10 without (most) of the BS

I liked the idea of Windows S because it was somewhat like a lite version of the OS, bad thing about it was the fact it can only run UWP stuff, having something like S or the old Windows 7 Starter Ed, with the ability to install and run .exe programs could be useful for old computers, but I think that's not gonna happen at all since ms is really focused into that UWP thing

Windows 10 S is not leaner than Windows 10 Home. It feels leaner because you don't have the 20 background driver panels and whatnot, "check for update" and "updaters" programs, and background programs starting with your system. That is all. You can replicate the feel by install Windows 10 Home or Pro, and ensuring that you ONLY install driver, without any panels and stuff, and not installing any bulky Win32 programs. You should have only 2 items in your startup list: OneDrive and Windows Defender, and nothing in Task Scheduler beside Windows native entries.

Is there a plan for a thin client?

 

The fact that it's missing some options but are not blocked makes me think that this is either fairly early in development or that those aren't there because end users are not supposed to manage it at all as this is just used as a remote instance with a thin client.

I have not read anything on Thin Client version of Windows, but it is a possibility as well.

Maybe we will know more at this BUILD event.

I use 10 Pro in my computer and my startup is just defender and the bluetooth/network icons, I don't even have the nvidia panel installed, only plain drivers, and windows runs great, I don't use onedrive so I uninstalled it

but my laptop... it can't even run home edition, it does have 1+ GHz CPU, 2GB memory and DX9 capable graphics but it just refuses to work, windows 7 has the same requirements and works..

Wait so did they not actually remove cortana with this version and/or their telemetry because I can hardly call it "lean" without those removed. However if they did I might actually consider this version of windows, as I just want windows without garbage added to it.

Oh god I seriously hope that M$ doesn't go the whole "Cloud-Based Desktop OS" route...

Considering the whole Facebook-dropping-the-data-security-ball debacle this is going to kill them.

Sounds like an OS for thin clients or basic workstations where limited amount of software is needed.

Dropping all the features just to save 2Gb hardly seems worth it.

 

The install is still pretty big even with the weight savings.

I'm quite interested in what will this turn into, considering Windows 10 compared to older operating systems spans an abundant amount of "features" with a fuckton of scheduled tasks, services, background processes etc with the average user not even knowing what they are for. Can this be the Windows 10 Light? Wake me up i am delusional!

Speaking as an SCCM technician: This would be a godsend for making preconfigured task sequences. We currently have to manually strip out all the parts of Windows 10 that could be misused by end users or are otherwise not suited for a business environment (looking at you, contacts button on the taskbar...). With an image that has only the absolute core systems, we could then build up a task sequence that installs and configures exactly what we need much faster.

Well, it does allow Windows to be installed on a system with 16GB of storage and have a few GB free for updates and maybe Office, and a bit of data. Currently you need 32GB of storage. Think of low cost devices.

You strip out too much. How is People hub (which I assume, that is what you mean by "Contact") on the task bar causes any security issue or miss use?
