Well, that was an encrypted iPhone that the FBI couldn't get in to. Eventually, though, I think they claimed they no longer needed Apple's help getting into the phone.

 

The WikiLeaks Vault 7 released showed that the US government has a lot of tools focused around hacking iPhones.

Yet because Apple didn't want to release a dead terrorists information, logically thinking, if you commit such a crime that privacy should only be a privilege. If a government wants/needs info off an encrypted device,it shouldn't be a surprise that they can obtain it.  It's 2018 any first world country government can easily crack a device if they want to so it's not just the US. The US is supposed to have the best security in the world,yet it gets infiltrated by Russia,China,North Korea and the Middle East every day. Everyone spies on each other as a side affect of such a tech connected world we are in. And,amidst all this accusing only the US of being evil you're still using US coded Windows and probably more than happy to carry a $600 spybrick running iOS or Android complete with multiple HD cameras & microphones,like these "BUT T3H N$@"! hypocritical whiners refusing to give their smartphones.

don't get me wrong and thankfully i'm neither Chinese nor American, but the American government warning their citizens that they can be spied by Chinese phones seems a little hypocrite if we consider the love of the Americans to spy on everything their citizens do

You know why a lot of US MSM didn't report on these leaks? Because they're propaganda, and that's how propaganda outlets operate: In the US, in North Korea, in wherever. They want to censor and ignore information that embarrasses the US government, and which makes the US look weak, foolish, or gotten to. That makes it all the more credit to RT, which is staffed and has its programming designed by many US citizens (as well as UK citizens), for having a bit more integrity and reporting on reality while US MSM ducked and covered from it. You're literally suggesting that RT is propaganda, or "spin", because it reported truth that US media refused to report. You need to re-calibrate your understanding of what propaganda and spin is. Truthful information that gets to you is not "spin".

 

The RT page is only reporting on the WikiLeaks publication, which it includes a link to. If you can't figure out how reading works, then don't comment. And if you're commenting like you are, then it indicates that you haven't yet figured out how reading works, and just reacting out of a brainwashed prejudice.

BTW, RT published a lot of stuff critical of Trump during the election. I don't think they had any favouritism for a US presidential candidate. I think you're just regurgitating what you've been programmed to say. And there's a lot of reason why you shouldn't be so easily buying into what US news media tells you. US mainstream news media is dishonest propaganda, that has been on a streak of being wrong or otherwise deliberately lying about every geopolitical affair since probably at least 2000. Even those who live in the US' propaganda bubble don't believe US news media.

Not that I want to fuel any conspiracies, but what a government agency claims they had to do to get the evidence and how they actually got that evidence could easily be two different things.  Remember some evidence collection procedures will invalidate the entire case in a court.

Ironically, just joined LTT forums to reply to this thread.

 

Not only did you guys get all political, trying to either defend US or find faults against it, you ignored the company affected - Huawei.

 

Huawei: third largest smartphone manufacturer, behind Samsung and Apple, and also the main provider for server infrastructure & all that comes with it (network, etc), holding close to 50% of the market share. Main player in 5G development too, investing huge amounts in R&D, and already ready to deploy 5G in various European cities, with (supposedly) 5G devices coming this year already.

 

This move from the US government/agencies is just pure protectionism. They don't want a Chinese brand on their territory. And you obviously never heard of Huawei, as this is not the first time the US pulls this crap on them. It actually happened multiple times, the most notable when the US gov. banned them from bidding on a large telecom contract, in... 2010?

 

Richard Yu already said all one can say on the matter: with its stupid protectionism, the US is losing one the best smartphone brands out there, which, as a long-term Huawei customer, I can agree with.

For those interested, here’s my experience with Huawei:

First smartphone I had was the Ascend P6, which mocked Apple’s protruding camera, managing to put a better camera in a thinner body. Then I moved on to the Mediapad X1, which, when it released in 2014, was seen as a crazy oversized phone (phones used to be less than 5 inches, so 7 inches was really something out of the ordinary…). Stayed with the X1 till 2 months ago. 3 years. That should tell you something about the build quality (all aluminium, huge battery still managing to hold an entire day without issues, camera still better than the average, etc etc). Currently on the Mediapad X2, which is amazing too.

Apart from those, I own the Matebook, a laptop/tablet, which I use for work. Also amazing quality and design.

Recently got the Huawei Watch Elite, which is impressive. I don’t use it much, but the built quality is something I admire. Battery lasts about 4 days with my use (2 for the average user) and so far didn’t have a single issue. Leather strap is quite comfortable.

And routers? I’m with SFR, so they give me a Netgear router, which dies every 6 months. I’m on my 4th one. Wifi with that trash? Pfff, works for 2 days then it’s gone, or is inconsistent, or doesn’t reach more than 5 metres. Netgear should be ashamed that a 5 years old Huawei wifi-repeater works better than their cheap 2017 routers. It’s the WS322, with speeds up to 300 Mbit/s, which I can’t use, as my internet speed is only 50 Mbit/s (yeah, SFR, whatever). 5 years, and still working. Wifi range? Full coverage on a 120 square metre flat, which isn’t surprising, as the device is made for hotels and such.

Next phone is the Mate 10 Pro. 100% sure about it. And I’m trying to get my hands on a Matebook X Signature Edition, for some reason that model is unavailable in EU.

 

So there you have, spying? Whatever, Facebook, Microsoft and Google have all been caught spying on its users, and we all know the US does it too. So what, you’ll avoid a Chinese brand because of this? Not only a Chinese brand, but probably the best smartphone brand out there? That would be stupid. You don’t know what you’re missing (and most probably don’t care either).

 

PS.: Yes, Huawei fanboy here. Problem? I recommend strongly Xiomi too, they also make impressive devices.

I have an Honor phone, a sub brand of Huawei. I'm not concerned in the slightest as Android isn't a paragon of security anyway, and I treat the phone accordingly. Of GCHQ/NSA, the Chinese intelligence services and Russian gangs after credit card details, the various intelligence agencies are the least of my concerns. 

 

Some people like to get tinfoil hatty about intelligence services, but almost all of us are far too boring for them to pay any attention too. It's the criminals you need to worry about.

This makes those 6 US intelligence agencies (well, ok, they need 6 because if they only had 1 they would be really stupid, so 6*lots of stupidity=some intelligence) warnings pretty.... worthless? Try another day, USA. 

 

edit: can't even defend the US with "protecting people", they were also stealing industrial information. Wow, who would have thought  so who copies now? Chinese or the US? Is the US struggling that much with networking? (yes they are, their netgear routers are middle ages compared to Huawei's...)
