Nintendo announces Labo,DIY kits for the Nintendo Switch

So Nintendo is basically announcing DIY kits for kids,to make items such as a motobike,piano,fishing rod etc. with cardboard.These kits will be compatible with Nintendo switch.

Starting with cardboard kits, players will be able to build creations that can then be connected to Switch and interact with specific software.

On April 20, Nintendo will offer two kits to start. A Variety Kit will be available for $69.99 and Variety Kit software as well as materials to build two RC cars, a fishing rod, a house, a motorbike, and a piano that can be built out of cardboard and attached to Switch.

 

A Robot Kit will be available for $79.99 and offers Robot Kit software as well as materials to build a robot suit.

 

They will be coming out with 2 kits in the start,A variety kit and a robot kit with the price tags of 70$ and 80$ US

 

I feel like they could have done a little bit better with the pricing of this product,50$ and 60$ would have been a good spot IMO.Otherwise I feel like this is a really different and interesting product and it will either be a hit or miss with this product.

 

These kits will be coming out with the software on 20th of April.

 

Another thing to Note which I couldn't find mentioned anywhere is, it looks like some of the creations like the robot will require more than a single pair of joy cons,if that is indeed true that increases the initial cost. NVM this was wrong

 

Also I really like how they named these kits "Toy-cons"

Where do you see the robot kit as needing multiple sets of joycons? I only saw 2 controllers total, the red one in the backpack and the blue one in the visor.

They're selling a game with some plans on how to build some boxes with reflective tape, rubber bands and string so that you can interact with it via the IR camera, motion sensors and rumble of the Joycon in specific ways. If anything the fact that they're doing it with cardboard is kinda genious. If it was made out of some other material like plastic you're telling consumers that if it breaks it's dead unless you have a 3D printer or something. Made of cardboard? Who cares if you brake it. Make another one, get some tape. Who cares because it's just cardboard!

And you'd probably rave about it if it was on kickstarter. I do love the Switch, I'll admit it. Easily my favourite gadget I have currently. But I was also one of the few voices raving about the NVidia Shield and the idea of playing "AAA games" on a portable device. I'm one of the people who has been wanting a portable PC in a Switch like form factor that doesn't suck for years just so I could do something like that. The Switch delivers on that promise more than anyone else has.

So yes, when Nintendo does papercraft style thing with a gadget/tech twist on it? I'm all over it. It's a fantastic idea. In the same way that I've thought largely the same things about every other small company who tried the same. Nintendo is nuts to do it on a grand scale and they get flack for it. But just because you don't get it doesn't mean it's only getting praise because mindless Nintendo zombies will love everything.

"You don't agree with me henceforth you don't get it" - That's not an argument. There's nothing to get: it's fucking cardboard. Even you admit as much. Kids have enjoyed playing with paper shapes for literally centuries since paper was invented.

 

Nintendo is just packing up a wheel and selling you on the idea that they're reinventing it and that it's somehow revolutionary, and you listen because of your admitted bias for them.

Wasn't expecting it but it does kinda go back to their roots as a toy company in a way.  While they do sell kits and instructions though I see no reasons why this wouldn't work with regular cardboard. You buy the set get the instructions and if it breaks get cardboard from literally anywhere.  I could see it being popular with kids though the cost does seem a little steep.

Ah, but Mindstorms can be expanded indefinitely, and Legos last longer than cardboard, especially when it comes to kids.

The cost is pretty high, but its not that bad. Sure its cardboard, but it is absolutely ingenious how it interacts with the Switch. Like if you actually watch the video, its more than just cardboard crafts. For instance the piano and how it uses the IR camera to detect which key was pressed. Its not for everyone, but honestly this is not a bad product.

 

I am more interested in this to develop other toy-cons of my own design. Plus using a 3D printer, I don't see why you couldn't make your own relatively easily with some CAD skills.

Honestly, I think it is pretty awesome (and gives a use for the fancy IR camera on the jopycon). I fun little project for anyone who has time and space.

You really get a game (or set of mini games for non-robot kit), and the cardborad.

 

I think the 3D printer community will even more fun doing actual plastic parts, and open doors for creative designs for other cardboard designs or 3D printed ones, especially if it works pretty well.

 

One thing that is shitty, is that Nintendo will NOT sale "just the cardboard", so that means that if you damage the cardboard., you have to buy a whole cardboard kit with the game at 70-80$. I mean I understand why, because they don't want parents to buy just the cardboard and missing the instructions (as this is with the game cartridge), and not the game to play with. But it would be nice if you can call Nintendo and order replacement cardboard directly from them. But I guess they don't want to deal with the logistics of that.
