Intel Z390 info leaked

NumLock21

Intel's upcoming 8th gen CoffeeLake cpu will need a brand new chipset. So far we only know about the Intel Z370, but according to a leaked Intel roadmap, there is another chipset called Intel Z390. No information about this chipset was known until now. A representative from Eurocom accidentally made a post about the purpose of the Intel Z390 chipset and the purpose of this chipset, is to have support for 8 core cpus.  Another interesting bit is, they will be skipping Z370. Maybe Z370 will only support up to 6 cores.

Yeah... I remember discussing this on the NBR forums and we got in trouble from other representatives for "breaching NDA" even though I didn't sign one, lol. Posts were also edited/removed to protect the unsigned NDA.

While we are at it, cannonlake will work on Z370, so at least people have that upgrade path going for them if they plan on jumping ship to the 8700k.

@done12many2 you recently asked me about the status of CFL in laptops, so here is your answer. I will say though, there is no way the Tornado F5 will keep an 8c/16t CPU cool when it already struggles to keep delidded 7700k's cool without external laptop coolers. I know people pushing 4.7ghz fine, but any higher and their thermals get out of control. This is including the modded bottom panels that HIDEvolution made (based on Mr Fox's design). Unless they figure out a way to add some thermal mass to that heatsink, and perhaps improve the fan (which is the current bottleneck as far as I am concerned), they are going to be dealing with a hot mess, lest they compromise on having much lower clocks in favor of more cores.

Do you think it's possible for Intel to make an octa-core for the Z270v2?

If they did, there is no way the die is the same size as the current SKU's. If that is the case, it's going to be serious hot being that dense. I've heard chatter that something like that was in the works, I just refused to believe it because it makes no sense. Intel could just as easily reduce the price of their current 8 core SKU to make it more accessible to the average consumer, without designing an 8 core from scratch to fit on the consumer platforms.

If such a thing is real (I doubt eurocom is lying, but it's possible for information to get lost in translation from one source to another), I would certainly want to see what the die looks like. Here's to waiting for Der8auer to inevitably get his hands on one to do what we all wish we could do, lol.

Nope

With the brand new, performance improving Intel XXX-Z2™ chipset, the chipset costs exactly $1! And the motherboards start at $5! However, to support a CPU, you need a $10 upgrade. For RAM, that's a $50 card! To support SATA I devices, thats a $200 card, and $500 and $1000 for the SATA II and III cards, respectively. For each PCIE x1 slot, you need $8000, and double for a x2, and quadruple for the x4, and so on and so on. To overclock, you need a overclock card, for only $1,000,000! Then to support a GPU, you need the Intel GPU Boost3 ™ technology, which is on a little chip, for only $5,000,000! For a BIOS, none of our motherboards will support it. You need to pay $20,000,000 for it. And I almost forgot! These boards only support a single core with the $10 upgrade. For 2C 2T, you need a $50,000,000 upgrade card for it. This chipset will not support any 1C 2T chips, to piss you off. For 2C 4T, you need a $70,000,000 upgrade card. Double for each step, including 3C, 4C, 5C, 6C and 7C and all the rest of the weird numbers even though we never made CPUs with those core counts. The new performance improving Intel XXX-Z2™ chipset. Practically free.

So Z370 is a dead platform before it launches? Intel is going to have a weird product base in 2018.

H2/2018 should mean the Z390 will be for Icelake. It might have PCIe 4.0, but I'd be surprised to see that in the consumer space next year.

Does this mean we're getting a new socket, then with Icelake that's not going to be compatible with Z370?

Well taking a healthy amount of grains of salt with this news, I'd mean that it will end up lining up with Zen 2 so it seems that AMD if they continue to deliver, caught them a bit off guard.

If Intel delivers an 8 core to the main stream desktop platform you have to believe that is a direct response to ryzen.

Z170 and Z270 users will need a new motherboard even tho (as far as we know) there's no reason why it should be like that.

Afaik it is perfectly possible but intel said "nope" and that's the result.

Some people just don't understand NDA's, NDA != classified information. Classified is regulated by law and is applicable to everyone and is enforceable at all times, NDA is just an agreement between two parties and cannot apply to anyone else.

The most amusing thing about the situation you described is that when a person has signed an NDA and has that privileged information any action on it essentially confirms it, by removing/editing public discussion that is just flagging it as correct information. It's best to just leave it alone and flag it with the correct people so they can contact the poster and get them to remove it IF they have signed an NDA.
