  1. don't you just love it when you do async online school precalc and your teacher spent a whole 12 minutes on an entire unit and refused to answer any questions on it, and then now it's year later and you are really paying the price

I hate it when teachers don't make sure their students adequately learn the material and then try to blame the students for it later.

my precalc teacher was the most asshole person ever, i had to file a complaint to even get a hold on him. async courses can be fine with the right teacher, but he was not it.

often times i actually prefer online courses, a lot of the online teachers are fresh out of university or literally not even done their university degree. like they're so short on teachers, for french, i got this girl who was doing her 1st year of education degree and was literally 3 years older than me. she couldn't even legally get a credit card yet. but she spoke french fluently so they pulled her in

btw she was great at teaching already and i probably learnt more french from her than any of my 30-50 year old french teachers

and it was great having a relatable teacher that was up to date on the latest tiktok trend or whatever lol

  2. Any reason for a sound card or ethernet card? Doesn't really make sense with how good integrated audio and ethernet is today. I'll make a list in a second, just wanted to ask first. Unless you have a special audio setup that won't be driven by motherboard audio, or want 10GbE, there's no reason for either of those.
  3. I know. Afaik GST is calculated like a VAT, not a sales tax. That's what Wikipedia says, at least. But we're getting pretty off topic....
  4. GST is a VAT. PST/QST/HST or whatever province you're in calls it is a VAT. I just call it VAT because I don't know which province OP is in. I live in Canada too, as you may know
  5. Get a 3080, dual GPU is dead. The main issue is that prices will probably be well elevated for the next bit. (Also Canadian here) Recently I've been seeing 3080s for around 1300+VAT even directly from retailers like Amazon. Welcome to the forums! I'm not all that much older myself haha
  6. A Comet Lake i3 is just a Skylake i7. I guess at $100, it is a pretty decent upgrade. Is that 8G/16G? What speed?
  7. 300 is theoretical, even in the wireless tab. WLAN doesn't work as well as people think.
  8. Realistically you aren't going to get a decent upgrade on $200. While there were IPC improvements, going from Westmere to Skylake still means the same old 4C/8T, maybe even downgrading to 4C/4T on $200. Skylake supports DDR3L on some boards, not DDR3. Which means new RAM. Personally, I'd bear a little longer on the X3470, and then move to Ryzen in a bit. It's pretty good value right now even compared to the good old LGA 1356/2011 boards. 16GB DDR4 - ~$70 B450 Board - ~$70 R5 3600 on Ali - ~$150 And you'd be set. Might need a new cooler,
  9. If it's just laying around you could very well consider using it. It should power even up to around an RTX 3060 fine.
  10. Don't get storage used. Please. Everything looks good in the budget! What model of 450W PSU is it? You might be able to get away with it.
  11. Everything looks pretty good. Do you have a PCPartPicker list? What model is the PSU? Considering he has a 5600G, and the cost difference, I'd just spring for the 650.
  12. from what i know it's not present in later models
  13. Get the EVGA G3 here, it's the best PSU in your budget. 550W is fine. earlier models have OPP issue, but not overheating issues
  14. Is it just me or has the quality of answers really fallen on this forum?

It feels like every thread is full of people with less than 500 posts posting poor advice or bad answers. Many of the knowlegable people like Luke, dexter, or myself, have largely left the forum.

It feels like a shell of it's former self.

he left because he wanted to leave, i'm not going to bother him.

Totally fair. Was mostly asking if you happened to be in touch with him, not for you to contact him, so no worries.

I don't really look at threads much outside of news unless one really sticks out to me or I'm extremely bored. It feels like the torch was never really passed along because new people didn't stick around much

im in high school (junior year/year 10) and i think most of my friends have been on here and found me without me even telling them i use it. some have gone on to be more active too.

i think you're underestimating where young people go

Most of the kids i knew never liked them.

  15. Don't buy by brand. Even Apevia and Gigabyte make some decent PSU models. Also, that XFX unit is a SeaSonic rebrand. I'd go for the i5 11400 in your scenario. No reason to get the 5600X for that much more. Pair it with a quality B560 board and preferably DDR4 3000/3200 and you'll be set. There is a large performance bump. You are running a little close with the PSU. It's a quality PSU and I have faith in the protections, so you should try running it on the 460W unit. Worst comes to worst most likely the system just shuts down and you buy a 650W
