Etherium mining is dead

So I have a 980Ti... has this card been inflated due to mining as well? Or was it not a desirable card? I could sell it for maybe $400 and buy a GTX 1070 when they are dumped for cheap in a couple of days / weeks?

 

Or should I just hold on to it?

As a new Ethereum miner, i knew ETH was going to go down fairly soon due to the extreme increase. It is called a correction. It will certainly go back up though. Ethereum mining will still be around for another 4 months at least.

 

However, the decrease in value is the main thing. At the moment, i am still making a small profit with the crash and my rig isn't even complete yet. What you have to realise, ALL cryptocurrencies have fallen, not just Ethereum.

 

If it was JUST Ethereum, then i would be worried. I can see the currency stabilising back to $300+ in August after the big Bitcoin announcement (Depending on the announcement, obviously).

If ethereum mining will still be around for 4 months or so, this means that gpu prices will remaing sky high for all this period?

@AndreLebrao don't buy AMD's cards for now, due to the inflation... Greedy bastards...

 

@maartendc I don't think the 980Ti's price has gone up, because, AMD cards are better at mining... With that said, just hold on to your current card. Only if it isn't enough for your needs, which I doubt it isn't.

Finally I can actually buy a 1070 that is the regular price and not $700.

Pretty much addicted to Gaming and Youtube. I think I have a problem.

Pretty much.  I sold my GTX 980Ti back several months for 280 bucks and that was with a full water block.  Selling it now would probably get you the best sell value for the card.  Reason I flipped two of mine, got four 1070s, let those mine to cover the remaining cost, then F@H 24/7 on all the cards.  :D   Quick way to expand my GPU army back out.

 

Hope to nab a 580 to fool with.  Don't care if it is mined on, I be abusing it with F@H and BOINC.  At least I know the card was stress test already.  :P

Sorry, i didnt wrote my question properly, I wanted to know if it is safe to buy a gpu that has been used for mining after the craze ends?

For the most part yes it will be fine. I am running on a veteran R9 290 of the old mining craze. With Eth mining people were downclocking rather than overclocking or leaving it at stock which is great for the next user. The only thing is how long until a cooling fan dies. Not too much of a problem for the XFX cards that have replaceable fans that can be bought easily.

 

My card has been fine. It is an XFX core edition (reference blower cooler). A year and a half ago I replaced the cooler because of how loud the blower cooler was, the fan hadn't died yet. The R9 290s had a harder time back then as they were super hot (with crap coolers) and ran at the max 94 degrees all the time. The cards this time had an easier life.

The initial wave of popularity for ETH is subsiding, but I don't think it's "dead". People are like lemmings. They tend to flock to the latest and greatest of the moment, but that in and of itself is often the cause of the downfall of the craze is question... Funny how that works. 

 

I'm hoping as people flock away from ETH mining, it's value will level off and those of us still mining it will still be able to reap a benefit.

Please don't tell me you believed that.  You just took the word of a miner (who has a vested interest) because its what you wanted to hear.  Thats like eating up whatever BS a used car salesmen tells you. 

Even if "many" miners were underclocking, there are many that wouldn't but would cranck that shit as much as possible and just want to pass the buck on to a sucker, especially those that weren't paying for the electrcity.

Here is what I do know for sure though; everyone of them selling will either tell you they weren't being used for mining, and/or that they're the "good guys" that were mining responsibly.

The only thing you can do is assume they're all lying out of their ass.
