Delidding Intels 7700k drops temps by almost 30C

brighttail

Thankfully Intel has some more time to deal with their thermal issues.

When originally tested, the 7700k CPU could obtain 5Ghz speed with 1.35v but was hitting temps of 100C!

"By delidding the CPU and applying CoolLabatory Liquid Thermal Paste and a Kraken x62 cooler, they were able to push it to 5.0Ghz using 1.344v with the fan set to 50%. The pump was at 65% and yet the temps plummeted by 30C.  An average of 26C."

Intel is set to launch Kaby Lake with the I7-7700k at CES in January 2017 so they have a little time to work on the thermals.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/55497/7700k-delidded-30c-reduction-temps-wtf-intel/index.html

I looked to see if i missed this post already out there, I probably missed it 10 pages back so sorry if it is a repeat!

NOTE ** This is not a recommendation to delid ANY CPU!  It is advanced knowledge and if you have any questions I suggest you google the video Linus did on the procedure.  The point of this post was to show that the thermal compound Intel is using on these pre-production and review CPUs MAY result in much higher temperatures.

Isn't 30*C comparable to what the 3770K and 4770K were getting?

Actually delidding it in THIS case will allow the temps to drop by up to 30 C.  The 7700k was running 5.0 Ghz but at 100C.  They delidded it and put new paste and boom 30C better!

DO not delid your cpu then.

Temps going down is good.

So in this case, DO delid your CPU.

That's huge.  I had heard it was running hotter than Skylake but if this is why, then there's hope - maybe it's not a bad chip after all, just a terrible thermal solution.  Hopefully when they ship them they will have fixed this by essentially factory-deliding them :P

i am just going to wait for the official release before jumping and believing things. for now just going to take it with grain of salt. i must admit that's impressive result.  i think in official release its going to be like the 6700k it will only drop 5c max so won't even be worth doing and risking destroying a very expensive cpu.

yeah this is bs if you read the article they used a thermalright 6 cooler before delidding then they used a kraken x62 after delidding

Good to know now I don't have to search for Tweaktown's BS since you did it for me (I've never seen a truthful article from them)

yeah, not sure why they mention 3 different coolers for 3 test runs(thermalright, corsair and kraken)... You're supposed to minimize variables when doing testing like this or the results mean nothing really.  I'm sure they had a drop but there's no telling how much it actually was

Even if the temperatures are 1/2 what is claimed, it could be note worthy.  Obviously more reviews are needed but this is the second or third article I have seen about their i7700K chips running hotter than the previous generation.

And imagine the temps if there was a safe way to solder on the IHS....Kabylake would replace Sandybridge as the go-to 5GHz 24/7 on air architecture.

As I said I have heard  a few stories about the 'heat issues' with Kaby Lake.  Does there need to be some better testing? Yes.  But imagine if changing the thermal paste could get you 5.0Ghz on 1.344v.  Pretty damn good at 62C

Or you could wait for ZEN, which are soldered, instead of paying overprices for few cores and shitty thermal paste?

My 3770k has always been delidded but I very much doubt it would be 30c hotter than what it runs now, I get up to about 60C on my noctua nh-d14 under high nonsynthetic load, over 80c on synthetic. My voltage is pretty high for the meager 4.4ghz I achieved though.

EditL just ran aida 64 cpu+fpu was high 60's actually, breeeeeeeeeety good

I remember pushing an older I5-2500k to 5.0 Ghz Stable on a Corsair 100i.  I didn't run it very long on that OC but damn those old 2500ks were beasts.

Yeah, just imagine if thermal expansion and physical strain weren't real. As thin as the dies have gotten, it's just not viable.

Does question what is up with the TIM? The difference is not normally that large. I am not a "delidder" but this is a major delta.

Tim had nothing to with this. It was all Steve, he's the guy in charge of installing the IHS's by hand.
