Spotify has (potentially) been killing your hard drive

For almost five months—possibly longer—the Spotify music streaming app has been assaulting users' storage devices with enough data to potentially take years off their expected lifespans. Reports of tens or in some cases hundreds of gigabytes being written in an hour aren't uncommon, and occasionally the recorded amounts are measured in terabytes. The overload happens even when Spotify is idle and isn't storing any songs locally.

So, I've been using Pandora simply because I don't like how Spotify looks. It appears that was a correct decision. Later on in the article, they state that this will be fixed in a soon to be coming update, but I don't think that excuses them from having to deal with the hardware they have already potentially killed. Who knows how many devices have already failed?

My ssd already has ~13tb writes in 11 months..  let's see how much it has gone up in the one month of Spotify.

 Yeah thats a crazy amount you would think maybe noticing performance issues no ? but then again for my web surfing i dont think id notice if something was moving data at 300Mbps on my ssd constantly  and can get thoese numbers fast

I used Spotify's web player because adblock+ blocks the ads.

 

Which I wouldn't even do if they didn't feel the need to play the same 2 ads after every other song... sometimes even back to back.

Interesting.. I just checked and in the past month or so, my SSD has had around maybe 1-2TB written to it, most of which is likely from unrelated stuff, however that's still pretty significant for such a small amount of time.

been using spotify regularly for the past few months, and i don't see any significant writing to my ssd... i downloaded process explorer as well just to check as well and the writing amount is fine. though simultaneously i noticed that chrome wrote 20gb in just a few weeks, yikes 

 

this is probably not representative of the issue, but i've taken this after an hour or so of streaming spotify
