Apple deleted non iTunes music off users' devices

pag

source :

www.Engadget.com/2014/12/4/apple-deleted-non-itunes-music/

something interesting that is coming out of apple's current trial.

When users connected their device to a computer to sync an error message could pop up claiming it needed a reset. After reset non iTunes songs would be missing and there would be no notification.

Apple claims they didn't tell users in order to avoid confusion.

"We don't need to give users too much information... We don't want to confuse users."

Even Apple considers their users retards..lol

That's a bold statement..

The primary reason why I don't like apple, is because they do a lot of cool stuff (like thunderbolt), but then they don't open it up. If they're doing this too, its another reason for me to avoid them.

When a user who had downloaded music from a rival service tried to sync an iPod to the user’s iTunes library, Apple would display an error message and instruct the user to restore the factory settings, Coughlin said. When the user restored the settings, the music from rival services would disappear, he said.

No shit, when you restore to factory settings all your non-itunes stuff disappears.  A little devious, but not surprising

Well considering how they have just been upgrading their digging equipment, they have to do something with the old stuff, so why not just share it with other companies?

Thunderbolt is a joint effort between Apple and Intel, and anyone can use it. They need to licence it off of Intel, not Apple though.

You can already get Thunderbolt on some Z97, and X99 motherboards. Asus sell a PCIe Thunderbolt card for their support motherboards.

Thunderbolt is Intel, Apple just has more products to take advantage of it, but Thunderbolt is and has been intels baby from start to finish.

Thanks for clarification. I thought it was mainly Apple's baby since they're all over it. Wasn't there some other interface that Apple exclusively had? Perhaps I'm wrong too.

Though, another tech they got is their NFC Chip which will be restricted to Apply Pay. I'm not a big fan of NFC, but I really don't like these kinds of restrictions. Same reason I don't like how phone companies give out locked phones, instead of just leaving them unlocked. (Though unlocking them isn't too hard yourself)

Apple deleted music that some iPod owners had downloaded from competing music services from 2007 to 2009 without telling users, attorneys for consumers told jurors in a class-action antitrust suit against Apple Wednesday.

“You guys decided to give them the worst possible experience and blow up” a user’s music library, attorney Patrick Coughlin said in U.S. District Court in Oakland, Calif.

When a user who had downloaded music from a rival service tried to sync an iPod to the user’s iTunes library, Apple would display an error message and instruct the user to restore the factory settings, Coughlin said. When the user restored the settings, the music from rival services would disappear, he said.

Apple directed the system “not to tell users the problem,” Coughlin said.

To plaintiffs in the case, the move showed how Apple had stifled competition for music players and downloads. They are seeking $350 million in damages in the decade-old suit, claiming Apple’s actions forced them to pay more for iPods. The damages could be tripled under antitrust laws.

Apple contends the moves were legitimate security measures. Apple security director Augustin Farrugia testified that Apple did not offer a more detailed explanation because, “We don’t need to give users too much information,” and “We don’t want to confuse users.”

Farrugia told the court that hackers with names like “DVD Jon” and “Requiem” made Apple “very paranoid” about protecting iTunes. Updates that deleted non-Apple music files were intended to protect consumers from those system break-ins. “The system was totally hacked,” he said.

Apple declined to comment outside of the court testimony.

Steve Jobs, the late Apple co-founder, also showed concern about hacking, according to evidence in the case. “Someone is breaking into our house,” Mr. Jobs said of music pirates, according to an email by Apple software chief Eddy Cue listed as an exhibit.

Cue and Phil Schiller, Apple’s head of marketing, are expected to testify this week, and portions of a videotaped 2011 deposition of Jobs are expected to be played.

They actually deleted it off my PC once some years ago.

Also, when I plugged in my ipod, intending to take the videos I took on it off, which were important to me, it wiped them as well, no notification.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Just because the events happened a while ago (and some of us knew about it then) does not mean it isn't news today.  Especially considering it is part of a current trial and some people had/have no idea it was happening.  Just like the Intel case which was based on events from a decade ago, many people thought it was an unfair dig at Intel until we had threads here in the news section explaining why it was legit. This is no different.
