I think it's pretty stupid that the person thought that they owned the handle on the social media platform and that they could exchange it for a free Tesla. But it's still pretty funny that Twitter just yoinked it for themselves.

I don't think the Twitter brand and name will ever be used by something else (sadly ). There are all these old links pointing to Twitter that they cannot get rid off.

Additionally, don't they need to keep the brand active (in some form) so it is still protected and cannot be used by other businesses?

I honestly feel that that should happen. Like how everybody still calls Meta Facebook and Alphabet Google. Never engage with these companies on their own terms. Especially if they unban accounts posting child sexual abuse material.

That's because these rebrands are about structure. They're new companies to deflect responsibility of the prior. The previous company STILL EXISTS, and the new company is simply the stock ticker/legal entity, so that acquisitions can happen without having to do any horse trading of what the surviving company is. If Alphabet or Meta want to acquire another company, just like Microsoft, they're not going to rename popular brands into new ones.

 

No the existing brand just stays right where it is, so it retains it's brand recognition. If Google was incompetent, they'd have renamed youtube into Google Video. But no, "youtube" has brand recogntion. "Google Video" just like "Google+" has zip, and failed because Google's brand is "Search" not "entertainment" and definitely not social media. Google has a better chance of making youtube the thing that Twitter should have been, all it needs is a chronological feed. GEE MAYBE DO THAT.

 

Twitter becoming X is more like an "unbrand" trading a company that had brand recognition for one that has none, just because Musk couldn't do it with Paypal (BECAUSE THAT'S A STUPID IDEA.)

 

If Musk was so hung up on calling something X, he should have put out a product called X, and then had "Twitter payments by X" to bring on that branding.

 

Ask anyone with a lick of marketing sense why you do NOT rebrand. You rebrand when the old brand is associated with a toxic thing that you can not fix. Have you ever seen a corporate give up a brand name? No. Even Cingular took AT&T's name, even though the current AT&T is actually what was previously Cingular/Bell South. 

 

This is basically the equal of McDonalds renaming itself to McX. Why? Nobody is going to call it that.

I mean the media just ignores everything that might be the reasoning though.  Like in that article, it ignores what was going on regarding it...in the case of like, Frohnhoefer, he openly admitted he was on the team to optimize Android...not really a good career choice when you claim to work on a team that worked on the issue before, when the owner is currently complaining about how bad the app is.  I suspect similar cases for those in the slack conversation. 

 

It's effectively akin to someone complaining their umbrella is low quality and letting the acid rain threw, and then the employees who made the umbrella criticizing the person for saying it's acid rain when it's really just regular rain...and then having the news only reporting that employees were fired for criticizing.  You also have to consider that at the time Twitter was still laying off tons of employees, so there naturally would be people who would be fired who criticized the leadership as well as those who didn't.  There probably is some who criticized and still are at twitter, but that doesn't make news that people click on.

I mean, there's lots of data that was already trained from Twitter.  Especially if you choose the dataset from lets say specific accounts, or you run a filter that lets say tries targeting ones with information it could generate a decent model I'd assume.
