Hopefully it dies and another mine-able coin takes it's place

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

The people controlling the majority of a cryptocurrency already control it. Whether you like it or not if I own 1% of bitcoin I have immense power over its value and its future developments. There's reason to believe the majority of these chains are concentrated in the hands of 100ish wallets who have essentially complete control over them - except unlike the government these are private entities with no accountability at all towards the other holders.

 

Further, mining is already massively concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy organizations who more often than not are part of the majority holders I mentioned. Decentralization of these "currencies" has always been a lie.

Hahahaha what, do people think GPU mining is only for ethereum??? GPU mining is here to stay. I'm also shocked on how uneducated people are on crypto who still think it's some scam or hoax. 

 

Also PoS is less secure than PoW

I would add Bitcoin is the only decentralized currency given it's PoW, satoshi coefficient, and the fact the creator hid themselves as a central figure to help keep it decentralized. Satoshi also has 1 million bitcoin which is about 1/21 the total supply so he still owns the largest wallet.

There will be people mining with GPU, but it's a safe prediction that the majority of GPU will be taken off the various PoW grids, as the alt coins have a fraction of ETH market cap, and even fewer real dollars backing them. Miners only mine if they can trade their blockchain tokens for real money. There aren't many that are mining to "secure the network"

Also blockchain can't be any less secure than it is now. Blockchain is very leaky, theft of tokens is rampant.

The resale value of GPUs is exactly the same in both cases. It doesn't matter if mining is no longer profitable because the coin went belly up or because it switched to PoS. Selling your used hardware will reduce your losses, but you'll make a loss in either case.

 

~edit: Actually, you make more of a loss if the currency goes belly up. In that case you're only left with the resale value of your old hardware. Right now you have your old hardware and your Eth are still worth something…

I mean, the biggest GPU mining reddit/discord just permanently closed, so idk what to tell you.

Of course, it will remain in small scale operations where a person can mine with 1-2 gpus and gain no profit, but atleast in a year's span it won't be as big as it once was with entire organizations with multiple thousand gpus mining ETH, there simply isn't a coin with enough buyers behind it anymore. Look at how a 3090 will now only bring in at best cents a day and see that at least for a while it wont be coming back.

 

And now, PoS isn't any less secure than PoW, you just don't need to own physical things (miners) anymore to stake in the blockchain. If you like crypyo so much you should see that a digital solution is better than a physical one? Also if you really think that the majority of ETH blockchain was proofed by some kids with laptops in their free time and not big corporations, you are sorely mistaken, so absolutely nothing changes with ETH.

To be fair, none of these leaks happened because of an inherent flaw in how the blockchain works, but rather because people trusted a third party (exchange, bridge, …) who either made off with their coins or had a flaw in their own respective systems. Or they fell victim to any of a myriad of scams.

 

As you said, most people get into it because they see it as "get rich quickly with zero effort", not because they actually understand the technology behind it or monetary systems in general. It's no surprise if someone ends up with a loss, because they fail to take basic precautions and there's no regulations in place to help them.

In other words, no perfect method exists and everything has drawbacks. There is also no fundamental value to any crypto. Its value comes from a combination of its use, rarity and people's interest. Even the fiat money we spend daily does not have any fundamental value other than being defined to allow you to pay taxes for the amount that is written on the coin or bill.

How does that logic apply? That's like someone buying a warehouse to start a shipping business well he knows maybe shipping won't work out but he needs a warehouse anyway. At the same time that area of town is really good and so if he invest in a nice warehouse he can always always get some return on his investment. Are you saying that someone should tell the man he has to create a shipping company with no other investments to fall back on and if he doesn't feel comfortable to walk away? How in the world is that sound financial advice?

This literally isn't any different of an issue to anything else. Those with money have a lot of it, a millionaire is still a millionaire, or billionaire, so you're just going to end up arguing over where they should or should not keep their assets/wealth and that is always going to have a large impact on those.

 

Those with a lot of money will or could always hold large numbers of any cryptocurrency so they are for sure not relegated to only having fractions of coins.

 

tl;dr deal with it, this is not an issue that will go away ever no matter the "currency". You cannot blockchain out of wealth inequality, it can't solve that, not ever.

It's totally fine to sell mining hardware to recoup potential loses or just cost in general, but if without that option you don't feel comfortable anymore then the investment is not for you from that point on and you should indeed walk away. The financial advice there, if you will, is to be honest with yourself about how much risk you are comfortable with and not to invest money you need relatively quick access to or can't afford to lose. Crypto has always been a very risky speculative investment and I don't think many truly grasp the idea that your $10,000 today could be worth  $100 in a week. You simply can't have your cake and eat it too. If you dabble in risky investments, you dabble in the potential for big losses. You can only try to minimise those losses by e.g. selling hardware for whatever the market will give for it.
