I'm not pirating, but I have to use piracy tools to legitimately use my legit Blu-Ray discs.

PXL_20220120_152634425.thumb.jpg.16608e0f02cbb6e6acc61db82e2a8d59.jpg

Do you like it?  It's my new LG WH16NS60 UHD capable BDRE drive.  I'm going to mod it's firmware later today so I can use it to rip UHD discs using piracy tools that I won't name.  Why?  So I can watch UHD discs that I actually own.  Playing BluRay on a PC is a chore, you need a drive, a monitor with HDPC working correctly, expensive software to play it back. Oh do you want to playback UHD discs?  Now you want to watch UHD discs?  Okay, you need a CPU with Software Guard Extensions that is only on Intel 6th generation through 10th generation CPUs.  Oh you have a 5th gen or earlier?  11th gen or later?  An AMD system?  No, you can't watch this disc.  We are afraid you might pirate it.  But if you did want to pirate it, you could just go online and download the movie or TV show.  I won't tell you where, but between pirate streaming sites, usenet and bittorrent, there's a million ways to get a UHD disc rip.  Ripping your own?  That's the hard way.  I own the discs, why would I own the drive if I did not own the discs?  I'm ripping my own discs to my media server for playback.  I have one 7th intel CPU and that's a laptop with only a DVDR drive.  Everything else is older or AMD.  So I can't just 'Watch' my discs, not without being treated like a criminal and jumping through hoops.  Hoops that don't exist if I just went online and downloaded the same media.  My computers can't properly playback a UHD disc, no... But with some fancy firmware and some software, they can rip a UHD disc to an MKV and everything I own can watch that with no hoops.

I just thought I'd rant a bit on how absurd trying to use a PC to playback discs you actually own really is.

Ps4 doesn't even do uhd. Only plays them at 1080p. But I'm guessing that is a type now that I'm further in my sentence :p.

At this point what is the point of it. Pirates will pirate, people will find ways to share and from my friends info of our nr1 (or nr2 depends on the month) biggest electronics store blurays aren't a big seller. Dvd sells magnitudes more to this day. 4k ones barely even move. They still have plenty of stock of 5+year old blockbuster movies and it just sits.

I mean with all the hassle and pain you might as well leave the discs on the shelves and pirate them instead. It's always interesting to see how anti piracy measures almost always affect legitimate users more than they do pirates.

Once I do the leg work, it'll be easy to just use (software) to rip my discs directly to MKV.  Which is the main purpose of this drive, other than burning BDR discs for archival backups.  That also means that my discs become 'backups', if for some reason I lose the rip I make for my own purposes and I can't find a new download online, I do own the discs and can rip it again.

Any disc I would rip would already have been ripped and propagated online before I even could, cause those often get 'snatched' from the supply chain and run through the necessary piracy tools a week or two before street date.

Now, I am however breaking copyright law.  While 'format shifting' is legal here in Canada, breaking DRM to do so does violate copyright law.  Morally of course, I spent $29.99 on a UHD/BD combo pack and just ripped it to my UnRAID server for personal uses.  They got more money out of me that they do most customers paying $9.99 /mo for some service.  It's not just the argument of 'No one gets hurt' but 'No one gets hurt and also I did pay them'. 😛

I feel that studios would probably prefer not to have playback on pc at all, given what hardware vendors had to implement to actually allow support.

And people wonder why Steve Jobs called Blu-ray a "bag of hurt." I'm all in favor of legit viewing, but these days I'd rather subscribe to a few streaming services or buy digital copies than deal with the hassles of a Blu-ray disc.

It's shit like this why I have no qualms about piracy.

You bought it, it's yours to do with as you please.

Thanks to shit like this, I buy my media used and rip, or if that's too problematic, find a copy online.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Canada's 'Format Shifting laws' actually preclude working around copy protection to do so.  Rip a CD, a format that has no copy protection?  Yeah, go for it.  Rip a BluRay, a format which has copy protection?  Violating copyright law.

Oh I see. Didn't know that part.
Well, regardless, they are very unlikely to target individuals and mainly go after people who circumvent copy protection with the intent to sell pirated copies. Not to mention, we have a cap of $5k as far as what the copyright holders can sue you.
