For some reason, Folding@Home has made my 1660 Ti's temperatures fluctuate quite regularly. It's not affecting PPD or anything, but it's quite strange.

It's more likely that those dips are checkpoints for F@H or it's just your fan curve that causes those fluctuations. If you set it at static % fan speed, check again and see if it fluctuates.

Well after 775 i think ill just go straight to 1366, total upgrade cost would prob be around 200-220$ considering the damn kit i can get comes with 12gb ram, cpu, mb, and even a gpu (hd5870 but much better than what i currently have), that is if i can convince my mom to buy me a computer instead of a laptop, only caveat is board has corrupted bios but if you have a heatgun that shouldnt be hard to fix

If i skip 1366 id prob go straight to 2066 considering i7 7900x es are 100$ on ebay and the boards are around 170$ on ebay, since intel has stagnated from skylake to rocket lake and only marginal increases were made other than raising cache amount then i can still expect decent performance

I think ill make a thread on this later when im actually gonna upgrade

Obv ill upgrade soon cause 775 is dead unless you want an ultrabudget pc

i would recommend 8th gen at a minimum to allow win 11 support later on. though i know that creates more cost but just saying futurish proofing if you can call it that....though next year msft could dump 8th gen but i doubt it...

Sorry but idfc about w11, by the time ill upgrade to a 7900x ill prob be using linux as a main os with a modded windows 10 which has been debloated like revi os as a dual boot

Unless w11 has a modded version with all the bloat stripped then i will not consider it whatsoever, or maybe i can get 9xx0 x cpus or maybe even 10xx0 x cpus for cheap so i guess ill have the option

In my area, anything below 10th gen and above haswell has well garbage value so im not taking an 8700k over a 7900x when 7900x > 8700k in cores, plus i can just disable some cores if i wanna game and prob get higher oc by disabling the worst cores

As much as I like using older platforms (especially X58 - I literally just ordered a Xeon X5675 and a Xeon X5690 for a couple machines here), you'd do yourself a favor if you got something newer.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

Price diff between upgrading to 1366 and skipping 1366 straight to 2066 or atleast 2011 is gonna be massive, 2011 cpus only offer 6 cores which is pathetic unless you get the non ocable xeons, though there are some boards that can run 130 bclk so if i can find one of those then 2011 might be an option, there is the 8 core 1680 v2 which is unlocked but that has a ludicrous price

2011-3 offers 8 cores in the form of a 1660 v2 but still ludicrous price though this gen xeons have turbo unlock, but im gonna get a non chinese scrap board so dont think itll matter when consumer boards will max the multi in the bios

2066 offers upto 18 cores, they are a great deal and overclockable, though im more interested in the 7900x es that has 10 cores for 100$ and overclockable

1366 id expect to be around 220$ (kit + psu upgrade + storage upgrade)

2066 id expect to be around 390$ discounting the gpu, and the gpu alone in  the 1366 kit is prob now 40$ or something

I had it checkpointing every 15 minutes, far less frequently than the frequency of temperature fluctuations, and the GPU was running at 50W for some reason. The GPU and memory clockspeeds stayed constant throughout the entire process, so I don't think thermals or checkpoints would have accounted for the pattern I saw.

But what it looks like is the fan curve is set so it hits say for example 56c the fan goes to say 60% then hits 54 and fan slows to say 40%(Disclaimer not sure just an example) fav is saying try hard setting fan to a certain percentage see if that levels out the temp.

I guess this is why my e8400 dips occasionally, cause i set checkpointing to 3 minutes

I was wondering why it was dipping to 0 for a split second in task manager ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯

Just brought another system online, this time an i7-3632QM. Not much, but hey, every little bit counts! Brings my total up to 6 different machines now. Also swapped out my 1700X's memory from single channel 2400 MHz to dual channel 3000 MHz, so hopefully that will help out that system a bit too.

However, I am presently firing up the secret weapon.  Installing Windows 10 as I type.  Just waiting for the updates.  Uggh.

It's a (pseudo) over 4.6 Ghz ALL CORE beast.  64 bit.  Plenty of ram to do the job.  RAID 0.  Dual networking and SLI capable.  750W power supply to feed it.

It's goin' to fly.

Not much of a match.  Linux is far superior, scheduler wise.

It's just that the secret weapon will need W10 for other uses.  Believe me, if I could put Mint on it for my use application, I would.  Sadly, there's one issue that won't allow it.

Oh, well.  Use whatever works, and choose whatever works better whenever you can.

I will "tune" it to within a nanometer of it's silicon though.  Hehe.

Folding on!

I am doing 10 cancer units per 3 hour block like clock work for close to 40 days now. How can I get any other type of work load to push points up? I had 1 day of Alzheimer's work which added 3m to the days total.... Then back to cancer.

This sounds ominous. Re-installed FaH to get it to detect my dGPU and I got this error on the first WU. Will this be a problem? It already doesn't seem to load the GPU up as much as before..

Error : * failed to load CUDA context : CUDA error PTX unsupported*

Never mind, fixed it. A driver update from 457.xx to 496.xx did the trick. GPU's warm and toasty now, like it's supposed to be. 😂

@BondiBlue what frequency and voltage do you run your desktop 1660Ti at?

Quick troubleshooting question -- has anyone here been folding using Nvidia driver 496.49, and if so, have you seen any issues? On both of the boxes I have with it loaded, I keep running into an issue where after folding for a random interval of time (seemingly after 8-12 hours?), my GPU clock will lock down to about a third of its max speed, and it's been tanking my PPD. Even more strangely, the boost clocks will only be restored after a full system reboot -- restarting F@H does nothing.

I'm on that driver with a 3080 and no issues
