Sponsored Video policy needs to change

Let me start by saying this is not calling out specifically LTT or Samsung.  This calling out all companies and all tech youtubers.

 

Also, this isn't talking about Sponsored Entertainment content like Intel's Extreme Make over or LG's Ultimate Bathtub gaming setup.  This is pointing an issue with sponsored videos on brand new products

 

The problem with Sponsored videos on brand new products is we, the fans/consumers, don't get a review of the product.  And this practice of sponsored videos on brand new products needs to change.  Lets take the Samsung Odyssey G9 Neo video.  Samsung shot-gunned the Neo G9 to all the tech youtubers for 'sponsored' videos.  It's free promo videos for Samsung without the complications of reviewers pointing out issues.  

 

Imagine if CDProjeckt Red sent Cyberpunk 2077 to all Game Reviewers for 'sponsored' video.  You'd be pissed, because you'd never know all the issues with the game.  Why is it different here with Samsung? (or any other company).  What if AMD 'sponsored' all the 6800XT content and there were no reviews/benchmarks?  Again, why does Samsung get a pass here?

 

I understand that Linus clearly specifies it's a 'sponsored' video.  That's not the problem.  The problem isn't 'sponsored' videos for entertainment pieces, it's sponsored videos on new products.  And people look for guidance with purchase decisions and with the fluff of a sponsored video (oh this looks great, look at those blacks) with no actual detailed review, the consumer loses.

 

Why bring this up?  Now that Neo G9 is getting in to hands of consumers in Europe, there are reports of issues.  HDR being washed out.  Screen flickers.  Scan lines.  Again, Samsung misses the bullet because all the units they sent out to tech youtubers are 'sponsored'.  I'm not saying the Neo G9 is bad.  I don't know.  It could be just some bad units, or cable issues, etc.  The only real review so far is from Hardware Unboxed, which is great, but we wouldn't say 1 review of the new Intel/AMD CPU is 'great'. 

 

Allowing 'sponsored' videos on new products is a slippery slope and the practice needs to change before all companies realize 'look we can get promo videos out there without the criticism of reviews'

 

Again, not calling out LTT specifically.  I posted it here because Linus has the biggest reach to make a change in the practice.  We've seen him stand up against the companies to help stop bad practices.   Lets help stop this.

I agree and the clickbait has gotten so bad especially for people who have disabilities and handicaps.

If you are watching LTT videos for serious reviews of new tech products, you've made a serious miscalculation. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Are they barred from making a review when they accept a deal to make a sponsored video? Could they not make a sponsored video on a product, then make a different video reviewing the product that is not sponsored by the company? I guess some people would question whether they would be biased after making a sponsored video of the products but they already get accused of being biased so not sure how different that would be.

It is free content, why do you feel that you are entitled to anything other than what they put out? At the end of it, LMG is a company and has to make money. If you dont appreciate the fact that sponsor posts / videos exists then you will need to find another platform.

 

I understand your point, but it is no different than a commercial for a product that you have every right and ability to skip.

If you are really looking out to buy things like this then I would recommend looking at reviews of the product on the purchasing page or look at other reviewer for content on the device, especially smaller channels because they are less lightly to be sponsored

Did you read my post or just skim it?  Because I wasn't complaining about all sponsored videos

 

See these lines - 'Also, this isn't talking about Sponsored Entertainment content like Intel's Extreme Make over or LG's Ultimate Bathtub gaming setup.  This is pointing an issue with sponsored videos on brand new products ' and 'The problem isn't 'sponsored' videos for entertainment pieces, it's sponsored videos on new products.'

 

But you are right, it is 'free' content and if a company continues to put money before customers (viewers), then eventually they will have less eyeballs for those videos

I think the real problem is that the US government really needs to step up and apply TV/radio advertisement regulations to internet video.

 

If this was on TV, LMG would be required to display in plain language that these videos are “paid advertisements” throughout the video. What we have instead are video creators scraping by on the bare minimum to follow YouTube terms of service and saying “thanks to whoever for sponsoring this video” once for a split second, which does not in any way reflect the true nature of the video.

 

I don’t know if I’d blame LMG for this practice. They’re a business and intentionally being vague in their disclosures is in their best interest. I think I’d place more of the blame on a lack of regulation that enables this type of behavior in the first place.

 

TLDR: Is LMG’s behavior kinda scummy when it comes to their infomercials? Yes. Is a lack of government regulation more at fault for letting creators get away with it in the first place? Yes.

I don't understand.  Are you upset that YouTube dances between "media" and " journalism" ?  Or that companies pay people to advertise through sponsored content on new products?

Funny you say that -- YouTubers (Tom Scott most prominent in my memory) say the exact opposite: TV/movies can have paid product placements all day and night with maybe a note in the end credits about it, whereas YouTubers have to make clear in a prominent part of the video that the thing is sponsored.  

 

As far as the subject matter in the thread goes...it's not awesome, but it's not like it is a hard tactic to spot.  Just...don't buy stuff on day one.  Give reviewers time to get their hands on a store copy of a product so they can give their unfiltered opinion.  Even then there are the obvious drawbacks of general kickbacks and "relationships" between tech personalities and brands, so it's not like you can even empirically trust unsponsored content.  You just have to put your faith in whoever you decide to have faith in.

sure, only when they do try to make more serious reviews. They have done more serious ones and have some balance, now it feels more of them comes inbetween at a point it doesn't seem like it wants to be either. Neither a full review or for fun. Now I get the feeling it's way more to push the video out than actually caring about the video and it's products. Maybe that is untrue or true, can't say for certain, just sometimes it feels (more) like that.

Product placement is an entirely different subject. US regulation (currently only with legacy media) comes into effect when ads are presented in a journalistic way.

 

All I’m saying is that if LMG aired these videos on television, they would be required to plainly display over the video that “this is a paid advertisement”. I think everyone could agree that it’s unfortunate that there’s a loophole excusing online video platforms from enforcing these regulations.

LMG does a good job letting the audience know when the video is sponsored.  The G9 Neo is clearly marked as sponsored.  Complaint is that, doing a sponsored video on a new product, allows the company to get around review criticism.  And shows other companies, 'hey, if we just sponsor a video, it's free press without the criticism'

You can feel that way but they’re still not adhering to legal requirements on basically every other form of media. Hell, even website based advertising has these regulations and that’s why you see third party ads on the actual YouTube site say “ad” and video ads adhering to “paid advertisement” disclaimer regulations. Youtube channels get away with it because YouTube isn’t legally responsible for channel’s content when it comes to their own advertising.

 

That said, ”Sponsored” is not adequate language according to the FTC. If they are being paid by Samsung to make the video, the FTC says they NEED TO SAY that they were paid money. If it’s a video broadcast, the FTC also says they need to print on the screen that it is a “paid advertisement”.
 

“Sponsored” can mean anything from sending the product free of charge, paying for materials used, direct compensation, etc. There’s a reason LMG and so many others use that word instead of adhering to FTC regulations. “Sponsored by” and “Thanks to whoever for sponsoring” makes the video creator sound more credible and less like you’re typical infomercial pusher.

 

There’s plenty of other regulations that LMG is able to skip over because of these loopholes like properly and prominently disclosing affiliate income incentives instead of burying a single sentence way down in their video descriptions. I’m not even going to get into that one…

 

Again, I’m not blaming them for gaming the system that has presented itself to them, I’m blaming the lack of action from my government to make video creators behave in a more ethical manner.

LMG could do a much better job at letting everyone know the video is sponsored, they used to put "sponsored" or "showcase" in the video title, now you don't know if the video is sponsored unless you click on the video, and LMG gets that click and view from you regardless. I understand LMG isn't the only one using clickbait or titles that don't tell you the video is sponsored, but I think LMG can do better.

Also on the the topic of the G9 Neo, not surprised reviewers are hyping it up, I recall LTT did a review of the original G9 and recommended it, even though a lot of G9 monitors were affected by backlight bleed or Gsync flickering.

I recommend HW Unboxed or RTINGS if you want actual product reviews, and they do in depth monitor reviews, GamersNexus does very detailed reviews on CPUs, GPUs, motherboards, and cases.

they did. the "reviews" that went up at embargo were only allowed to use approved b-roll/gameplay. it wasn't until people actually started playing it that all the problems got exposed.

Yes, but the reviews were totally allowed to say 'this game is extremely buggy' and all of them did

The changes you want to make really have to come from LTT themself. If a brand contacts them about a new product they have the option to come to terms with them. Afaik Hardware Unboxed also received their review unit from Samsung "for free". But like with LG they said from the beginning that they will only do a full review. If LTT decides they rather want to make it into a sponsored showcase (which really just means "ad"), then this is on LTT.

 

I myself take every video that says "sponsored" with a mountain of salt. But as most LTT videos nowadays are heading more towards entertainment and subjective opinions they're not my source for proper product information either way. Don't get me wrong, i still like their videos. Just not as a reviewer.

 

But i see your point that this flood of sponsored content (ads) will mislead customers into thinking they're buying a product without flaws.

 

Like with every other industry out there the best thing you can do for yourself is being an educated buyer. I'd personally not buy a product after seeing 1 single review. And i'd especially never buy anything out of the manufacturer's claims alone.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Tbf, I never really use LTT for purchasing choices as I see pretty much everything that they put out as entertainment. A product that they have in a video might be the seed for some real research on it and LTT tends to put out what I'd consider a subjective view on products, whereas other channels will go into in depth analysis and technical detail. Subjective information can be as good too because it can contextualise otherwise sterile information. And just to be clear, I'm not saying LTT never puts in the work to provide objective information at all, but tbf, if you're making a substantial purchasing decision, you should be going to multiple sources to make a judgement on a product in the first place.
