OAKLAND, Calif. — The seeds of a company’s downfall, it is often said in the business world, are sown when everything is going great.

It is hard to argue that things aren’t going great for Google. Revenue and profits are charting new highs every three months. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is worth $1.6 trillion. Google has rooted itself deeper and deeper into the lives of everyday Americans.

But a restive class of Google executives worry that the company is showing cracks. They say Google’s work force is increasingly outspoken. Personnel problems are spilling into the public. Decisive leadership and big ideas have given way to risk aversion and incrementalism. And some of those executives are leaving and letting everyone know exactly why.

“I keep getting asked why did I leave now? I think the better question is why did I stay for so long?” Noam Bardin, who joined Google in 2013 when the company acquired mapping service Waze, wrote in a blog post two weeks after leaving the company in February.

“The innovation challenges,” he wrote, “will only get worse as the risk tolerance will go down.”

 

My thoughts

Google has been blessed with effectively a monopolistic industry driving profit regardless of what it does (Search & Ads), backed up with further practically (little competition) monopolistic entities (Youtube, Gmail, Android, etc). If they literally didn't change anything in the past 5 years I bet they'd still show rocket profits.  Sundar's reign over Google has however been pretty ... lax. Android has evolved incredibly slowly, Google has ... search still, Youtube has lost a lot of ground in game streaming and 'viralisation' (Tiktok).

 

While I don't feel Sundar is ruining the company, his cautious approach to innovation and risk is ... well boring. A company that can print money should be taking more risk. Hell bezos is shooting for the moon, Elon's shooting for f***ing mars. I feel Google had some great little ideas, but I can't trust them to support them for long.

 

I can see Google just turning into another Microsoft. Critical but boring and entirely predictable.

Well I guess that depends on what success means to you. If success means having a profitable business then Google has accomplished that. If success means constantly innovating and trying to push the envelope then I would say Google hasn't succeeded in that. I personally think that Google is doing just fine tbh. Sure they aren't Amazon who constantly innovate and expand but tbh I don't think I want Google to do that as well. Amazon is already getting to big so I don't think we need more of that.

Once we find life on Mars google can expand there. Earth and all our information is pretty much tapped out. 😉

For one it doesn’t help Google supports products for less than 2 years on average. But now everyone is selling privacy which undermines Google’s biggest source of income. So I hope Google does loose a lot of money and it forces them to reshuffle and be less evil

My 2 cents: when I search for structural analysis books, I want civil engineering, not woke garbage that Google answers.

 

They completely broke their search to push garbage into people.

I'm not. I have their Power Searcher (2010-2011, I think) certificate to prove. It has been going downhill since 2017 and has been complete garbage since 2019.

Thats not entirely on Google though, Qualcomm is more at fault for cutting driver support after 2 years, it makes sense Google wants to use their own ARM chip in the pixel phone.

But every company is evil in some way, even those selling you privacy.

@BuckGupprobably isn't just referring to their phones. Google has a nasty habit of trying to enter a market, either by buying a player who was already in said market or trying to strong-arm themselves into it on their own without having a clue (looking at you, Stadia) and whenever a product doesn't pan out the way they intended, they're not shy about axing it, regardless of how useful it might have been for the users it had. There's a reason people are tracking Google's graveyard. To say they're prolific would be an understatement.

 

And this is exactly one of the reasons why I'm wary of Google. I really like a lot of their integrated services that I happen to use. But I'm painfully aware that this is something that can easily be taken away from me. I used to use the Google Play Music app on my phone for a long time, since it allowed me to upload my own library of music to their servers and sync it to my phone anywhere I had reception. They axed that in order to fold it into YouTube music. They still offer the library upload, but the YouTube music app has a much worse UX. And since I was already in the market for a NAS for backup and Plex video purposes, I just bit the bullet and now use it too as my server to stream music to my phone.

Google only has ever produced 2 products that make them money, and a few that act as advertising to drive people to their services for more advertising. It's been a known issue for a decade. The company is basically the greatest "one-trick pony" in history.  You can see the move to the Alphabet structure in that light. They've been trying to diversify, but it's gone poorly. Cloud Services, I believe, are profitable these days, though it took years. But basically everything else is a huge money sink.

 

Though their biggest issue is the lack of friends and extremely few even strategic partners. That was always going to be their biggest issue.

Google being stable is a good thing. We dont want new things released under the google name and then being gone in 3 years.

 

The reason why alphabet group exists is to enable small projects to be created under different company names. As they become successful, it will eventually be integrated under the google name.

I completely agree, once you have gained this much money and you don't aim to improve the world anymore. You no longer deserve that money. They could bring an entire country out of poverty with the cash they have.

Google Adverts = 31% (but combined with the outreach of its other primary products, pretty powerful)

Yep because big companies should just continuously get bigger and innovate more just like Amazon does because Amazon so great. I mean if you really are concerned about big business holding alot of money then them getting even bigger by innovating constantly doesn't seem to aline well with your thoughts. I personally would rather not have a second Amazon. Don't get me wrong Amazon as a service is great and I generally don't care to much but Amazon keeps getting bigger and bigger while also creeping into more business sectors making one wonder when will antitrust laws start to apply for a company simply being to all encompassing even if they don't outright dominate any one market sector.

A lot of things about google, would really like to see them with more push for a change with android and try something new.

They have a lot of nice services, also I do wonder how they plan on doing with a lot of content they have.

Like I reaaly love their movies library, you can get some classics, they seem to support them instead of the mess with subscription services and those who are more region locked and only has it for X amount of time or season. Hope they will take care of some of this art, some media that has been lost to other markets, its really nice to see when they have something that others dont have anymore. But if they were to shut everything down at some point? rip.

Even though their library is a little messed up, its still worth it for me.

I believe it's perfectly fine that Google is taking a more conservative approach to business, after all that is what supposed to happen when a company grows into a global giant. They have more to lose + it's easier to make money once you have a tone + they don't need to take risk (only maintain the domination). I don't think there are any substantial problems here.

Googles search has been getting worse and worse lately i've found.

 

It used to be a really good way of finding sites with information on... now most of the results are just for ads, online shops and businesses. I'm finding it less and less useful as a tool to search the web.

People that think Google is getting worse, are mainly judging Google from their innovative start. Everyone has gotten pretty used to their results being right at the top, that they're effectively taking it for granted. People have been gaming SEO for a very long time now, and there isn't going to be anything revolutionary to tweak on Google's end, that depending on your search, you might need to go to the second or third page to find what you want. I don't think that's on Google per se.

 

The other thing that has always irked me, is the Google graveyard; far too many projects have been abandoned before properly seeing their true potential. Now, some of them were more for proofs of concept, and that code base was integrated elsewhere into Google's other services and platforms, but it's still disappointing. 

 

It's fairly debatable if Google is "suffering." Perhaps they need to compartmentalize more, or figure out some different focuses going forward to keep growing revenue.

Agreed. Just 6 days ago they killed Hangouts and Polly, both of which were great, one of which I used daily during the beginnings of the pandemic (hangouts), the other i used when tinkering around with making a model for something (Polly)
