When's the last time you used an optical drive installation of an OS?

I'm not complaining or anything, this set up was free and I'm thrilled about it - I'm a Ford technician and this laptop is going to work to live on my toolbox and be used for diagnostics. This is my first time booting Windows on an optical drive in.... I don't know how many years though. I'm about to wipe it and use it solely for proprietary software but even just in booting the system... It's kind of an extremely painful experience. Nothing is as responsive. The BIOS on this thing for some reason is absolutely refusing to boot to USB. It runs like someone has downloaded an RTX 3090 and an R9 5950X to a SSD and then hit the whole system with a brick.


(also oops, just realized i was using my wrong usb drive.)

How did we ever live like this? I'm going over to grandma's house and replaced all of her platters with SSDs. I'm so sorry, grandma. It's not that we don't love you. It's that we had forgotten how this felt. 💔

Hmm....about a few hours ago... Yea I fix a lot of old laptops (still running single core atom cpus...) sometime installing windows on usb stick just won't work at all on them. So I found that using one of those usb optical disk reader/burner thing works best.

Last time? Probably a couple years ago, can't remember when exactly, but at least 5 years.

Most relatively modern PCs typically support USB installs of modern OSes, so that's my preferred method of installing an OS.

Unless it was for myself, for fun, I wouldn't service a Windows XP (or older) machine today. Replace that cursed thing and don't plug it on my network.

I do do retro computing which of course involves optical media for installation but I'm sure we don't mean that in this thread.

given I've been building some core2 era systems to sell. last week I used an optical drive to install windows 10.
I keep having flash drives die and I've got lots of blank DVDs so its easy enough.

Last time I used an optical drive was to reinstall Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 4500S, which was back in mid December. That's the only time I can recall that I've used a disk though. I'm somewhat new to the PC building/repair scene, so the only other OS's I've installed on a device are Windows 10 and a few different Linux distros, all of which were installed via USB.

I mostly speak from my own past experience from similar problems. My solution may not work for you, but I'll always try my best to help as much as I can. If you want me to see your reply, make sure to quote my comment or mention me @WaggishOhio383, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

About 30 days before Windows 10 was released. Reinstalled Windows 7 on the system. Then I did the in place upgrade 30 or so days after. Then I ran with a broken system till Probably January of the next year.

I would say 10 years, 9 for sure. I even had an optical drive always connected "just in case" up until 4 years ago when I disconnected it but still had it "just in case". But then I grew tired of my Define R4 and I replaced it with a Meshify C 2 years ago, cementing the fact that if I need an optical drive I am screwed on this machine, I will have to use my other one.. but first I will have to connect it, but its there "just in case" 😄

i was trying to install windows 7 on an m.2 only laptop and well i tried everything that lead to making a usb stick for install the os and it SO much faster.... should have done it years ago...

 

just installed 98se with a usb stick so ya i got more usb sticks in the mail so i can make a xp usb stick. other then stick an disc drive in to fill an hole in the 5.25 bay is what ill probably use em for.

Optical (disk) is still how I do it, plus I already have them that way.
I have the drives, the disks, already setup to go so thats just what I do.

I... um... uhhh.......... The last time must have been like a decade ago or more. I can't quite frankly recall, it has been so long.

 

I live in Finland and datacaps have never been a concern, so it's just always been much, much more convenient to download an ISO online and use a USB-stick. I also don't have anything stored on optical discs -- movies, shows, games etc. can all be obtained online as well, so even a decade ago there just wasn't any need for discs anymore.

I'm not a masochist so I never did that.

 

That being said, I did attempt to run a very light linux distro off of an USB stick on USB 2.0, and jesus christ it was a nightmare.

Since a few of my installations are OEM by disk, dominately windows 7, have installed many times via disk.

 

Once a year for benching sometimes less.

By usb W10 only via USB when needed.

I think it was Windows 8. My Internet connection was pretty slow back then, and I don't think MS did their handy tool for creating installation media, so I would have been half through installing Windows off the disk before I even had the USB drive ready to go.

i wonder if creating and ISO from the actual DVD and then using only the ISO file still counts xD it it does a few minutes ago on a new hpe server xD(server doesn't have optical drive ... )
