When's the last time you used an optical drive installation of an OS?

Last time was 2013 when I built my Ivy bridge PC (i5-3570K + GTX 770). Still had a BRD\DVD optical drive and a Windows 7 disc. From that point onward it's always been UEFI boot and loading Win10 from USB.

Last time for me was yesterday with a Dell OptiPlex 755 I picked up from the curb. They're very handy when USB drives don't work right. I have an older HP desktop that won't boot properly from basically any USB drive, but it has no issues with DVDs.

The last time I used optical media for a OS install was when I built my PC, some six years ago. I used my neighbor’s Win 7 disc, and used my old key from my college (via MSDNAA) when the OS launched. 
 

Upgraded to Windows 10 a year or two later.

'Bout an hour ago, reinstalling Ubuntu. Before that, it was around a month ago, using a Win10 CD to update my laptop to 20h2. Then around 6 months prior was using that same CD to install Windows 10 on my brand new workstation. So yeah I use it a lot.

Oh and I still use floppies.

Windows 8 was the last time I used a optical drive for windows. I had to throw it out once I built my new rig cause optical drives are lame.

At least a decade ago....... I think the last software I used to optical drive to install was the D3 expansion.

But every now and then i do convert some of my cd's to FLAC

When I bought a copy of Windows 7 was the last time I even saw OS on a Disk.

Actually just remembering that the first Win10 copy I bought was on DVD, although I probably didn't install it off of it. Should see if I can still find it and install on an old PC

both usd sticks went into the washer and the only thing i had around was old cds.. It worked out, just.. so so much slower than i imagined..

 

2 weeks ago because my lenovo laptop from 2012 is dying it seems, windows 10 does not like 12 gb mixed ram.

I hate thumb drives with a burning fiery passion so I stick to CD installs. Last time was when I built my current PC in 2018, its never needed a reinstall thanks to all the features of windows 10.

Seeing its possible, i might just do that. But its been working solid for 9 years now without an issue

 

"Gamer" laptop from 2012 did not help this one, good thing it was possible to put a disk-drive in it as the one we got back in 2012 just had an empty room in there

When USB drives became popular i completely abandoned CDs.

Funny to see so many setting panels still using the old UI instead of the annoying settings app... Did launch a search for updates, and it updated to 20H2 in one go.

I can't remember exactly when, but I installed different OSes from CD or DVD in 2020, so I guess a few months ago.

I think it was about a year ago I installed Windows XP onto my ultimate 2004 gaming PC with a CD. Most of my computers have an optical drive, including all my laptops.
